Chapter 2 Princess Ji
Zhong Yan opened the door and saw a large and small group of people standing outside who seemed to care.
The old lady, supported by someone, stepped forward and asked with concern, "How are you?"
Zhong Yan put his arm around Ji Tanyuan's waist and walked out. "It's not pregnancy, it's just that she's not used to the new environment."
"However, Grandma, Tan Yuan's knees are not good, so I will serve tea to her in the future."
As soon as he finished speaking, the room fell silent.
Old lady: "What did you say?"
Zhong Yan smiled, his expression somewhat sly and unserious: "I said, my wife has bad knees, so I'll kneel for her from now on, is that alright?"
"If you ask me, how can filial piety be something a woman should do? You didn't raise her, so the man in our family should be the one kneeling, Dad, don't you think?"
Mr. Zhong, who was coming downstairs, looked completely bewildered by the question: "What?"
The old lady pointed at Zhong Yan, "You unfilial son, I'm just following the rules of our ancestors, and you're making unreasonable demands? Fine, you think I'm bullying your wife? Why get married if you're so delicate?"
Zhong Yan glanced at Ji Tanyuan, who had no expression, and then at the ring on her hand. It was a top-quality VS2 diamond with a 3EX cut, which was priceless and hard to find. She really had the right to be so delicate.
He thought about her bags, cars, and those private designers. Without money, he might not be able to afford them. Luckily, he was a businessman and could afford to support her extravagant lifestyle.
“We can’t let her suffer. She’s pampered at her parents’ home, but she has to suffer at her husband’s home. The Zhong family is a slum.”
"I can't afford to lose face like that."
No wonder the Second Young Master Zhong has such a sharp tongue; he insulted his elder brother and even his own father. He has always disliked the weekly greetings.
I wonder what these two grown men feel when they see their women kneeling every week. He tried to stop them once, but it was no use, and he was even scolded.
The old lady cried out twice and was helped up and comforted.
Zhong's father scolded Zhong Yan: "Shut up."
He didn't know what to say to Ji Tanyuan, but he reprimanded Zhong Yan with every word.
Ji Tanyuan moved closer to Zhong Yan, grasped his arms with both hands, and spoke gently, taking the initiative to yield:
"It's because I didn't know the rules, so I didn't expect that there was such a custom in Yanjing. Dad, please don't be angry. A woman follows her husband's lead, and I will try my best to get used to it."
She spoke directly to Mr. Zhong, her attitude upright, but Mr. Zhong somehow discerned a different meaning.
It's as if it's saying that someone who talks about modernization on the news actually goes home and regards feudalism as the ultimate truth.
Zhong Yan didn't expect to be betrayed so quickly. He pulled his arm away and sneered, "Fine, kneel if you want, go ahead."
Ji Tanyuan choked, glaring at him. Did this man even know how to act? Did he understand tacit understanding? Was she supposed to cheer him on from the sidelines? He was his grandson, but she wasn't.
This newlywed couple certainly had no chemistry whatsoever.
At this moment, what was meant by scolding became blame in Zhong Yan's eyes. What was this? This was betrayal.
The two were the youngest among them, married for only two months, not even a year old yet. Zhong Yan wasn't exactly a gentleman; when he got sharp-tongued, even his own father would criticize him. How could he expect to coax his wife? So, before the two could start arguing, Zhong's father quickly waved his hand and said, "That's enough, that's enough. You two, go back."
Don't let a fight break out and make Ji Tanyuan go back to her parents' home; that would make us a laughingstock.
A hint of mockery flashed in Zhong Yan's eyes; the Ji family seemed to carry considerable weight.
Apart from Zhong Jing and Zhong Yan, everyone else present was extremely shocked.
The old woman's heart pain had subsided, and her voice cracked slightly as she asked, "What did you say?"
How can she undermine herself like this? How will she maintain her authority in this family after this?
Mr. Zhong was a little annoyed and waved his hand, "Tan Yuan, let it go this time, but this is the Zhong family tradition."
In other words, this is unavoidable; we might let it go this time, but we'll have to kneel again next time.
The old lady was the first to disagree, "No! How can we let this go this time?"
Mr. Zhong said seriously, "Mom, the two of them are still getting to know each other, so let's not get involved."
He might turn a blind eye to minor squabbles, but when his fundamental interests are threatened, he cannot stand idly by.
Discipline must be carried out gradually; being too hasty and forceful will only backfire and strain relationships.
Many people are intimidated when this head of the family puts on a serious face.
Wen Yi'an hadn't realized how easy it was to break this annoying rule, and she had foolishly followed it for two years, cooperating with the old lady's act.
She looked at her husband. His brother was willing to do this for his wife, so why had he stood by and watched coldly back then?
Zhong Jing felt his wife's gaze. He raised his hand and grasped hers, then looked at Ji Tanyuan's back. Being forgiven for small things meant facing something much bigger to come.
He should be thankful that his marriage wasn't overly manipulated by his father.
The marriage between the Zhong and Ji families involves significant interests. If the Ji family compromises for their daughter's sake, things will be better. However, if they do not compromise, Zhong Yan's marriage will certainly not end well.
When Zhong Yan and his wife went out, they were both young masters and ladies who were used to living a life of luxury. They had a noble temperament and seemed to be a good match when they were not talking. However, they had their own opinions about each other when they lived together.
Ji Tanyuan considered herself easier to get along with than this young master, and this difference was evident in their daily life.
This young master Zhong is a clean freak, extremely private, and lives a life of his own choosing.
The housekeepers are paid more than twice as much as ordinary people because there are fewer people and more work to do. But the good thing is that the housekeepers don't have to stay at home at night or enter the master bedroom. The master bedroom is cleaned by the homeowner.
Sometimes, when the male homeowner feels like cooking, he can leave work early.
But Ji Tanyuan didn't think so. She felt that a messy house wouldn't affect anything. On the contrary, it would give a warm feeling and make the house seem more welcoming. Mainly, she was just lazy and used to having servants tidy up behind her.
Therefore, the two reached a slight tacit understanding on this point, believing that the other was being difficult.
Ji Tanyuan inwardly complained, but on the surface, she remained as gentle and considerate as ever, striving to perfectly portray the image of a virtuous wife.
She spoke softly, in a gentle, melodious voice: "Thank you for just now."
Zhong Yan turned to look at her, staring into her eyes, "Are you really stupid or just pretending?"
Ji Tanyuan's smile froze for a moment, then Zhong Yan rubbed her face.
"In a wealthy family, being too naive will leave you devoured without even bones. You should understand this better than I do, or have you been living in an ivory tower for over 20 years without ever coming down, Princess Ji?"
Ji Tanyuan pursed her lips, "Why don't we sit down and discuss this?"
If it's a contest of who has the loudest voice or who is the oldest, then she really has no chance of winning.
Zhong Yan withdrew his hand. "Well, you really are naive."
Zhong Yan looked somewhat bored. "I'll have someone pick you up tonight; I have a date."
Ji Tanyuan responded.
The two of them weren't just doing their own thing; she had to do what Mrs. Chung was supposed to do, and they both had to do what a married couple should do.
For example, sleeping together and playing along.
Speaking of this, Ji Tanyuan couldn't help but complain that the former was exhausted and should have filed for workers' compensation.
But Zhong Yan didn't think so. He was 26 and Ji Tanyuan was 23, which was the age when their physical condition was at its best. Sexual desire was not a shameful thing. Although there were some differences in their daily lives, they were compatible physiologically. Isn't that all there is to it when a couple is together?
In Zhong Yan's view, as long as he doesn't physically dislike Ji Tanyuan, they can be a couple.
