Chapter 4 Don't worry, I don't have a penchant for cheating.
The words whispered in her ear made Ji Tanyuan's heart skip a beat, then she laughed, "What are you saying?"
Zhong Yan crossed his legs and spoke to Shu Yun, who had a sour face: "That's enough. Look at you. She doesn't eat people. You look like you could eat her."
Shuyun took a deep breath. This person was still so sharp-tongued. "Do you still consider me a friend or not?"
Another woman present tugged at Shuyun, comforting her, and then politely said to Ji Tanyuan, "Miss Ji, please don't mind her. She has a short temper, but she doesn't mean any harm. Please don't mind her."
Ji Tanyuan smiled and shook her head, "It's alright."
"Tan Yuan, you have a double degree from MIT?"
Suddenly someone asked a question. It was Cheng Gengxu who asked the question. Ji Tanyuan looked up and saw that the man had a buzz cut, was full of energy, and had bright, captivating eyes.
Ji Tanyuan nodded, "I've heard of you too. You graduated with a master's degree at the age of 20 and were even praised by your professor in class."
Cheng Gengxu smiled and swirled his wine glass. "You're excellent too, graduating with two degrees before you were even 20."
Did you not continue working on Wall Street after graduation?
Ji Tanyuan clenched her fists slightly, then smiled gently: "No, my mother missed me then, so she went home."
Shuyun scoffed, "You've learned nothing."
Cheng Gengxu nodded, it was unclear whether he agreed with her explanation of graduating and returning home or with Shuyun's sarcastic remark that she had wasted her education.
When the person left to go to the restroom, Zhong Yan looked at Cheng Gengxu and asked, "Do you know him?"
Cheng Gengxu found it somewhat amusing, "Junior, didn't you hear that?"
Rong Xi said with some regret, "Such an excellent resume, plus the Ji family's background, I never thought I could only be a supporting character in a marriage alliance."
Shuyun clicked her tongue, "Who are you feeling sorry for?"
Rong Xi pinched Shu Yun and whispered, "It's a pity for you. It's settled, my dear. I was just being polite. You're my best friend. I'm just a tool for a marriage alliance. Is it really worth getting so angry?"
Shuyun's expression softened a bit. "You're not allowed to be friends with her."
Rong Xi found it somewhat amusing, "They're in the 'rich wives' group, I'm in the 'career' group, I can't possibly succeed here."
Shuyun raised her voice a little, "That's right, they're rich people, they might have some experience with buying bags and luxury goods, they might not have anything in common with us. Ayan, I think your wife is bored here, don't bring her next time."
Zhong Yan's expression turned cold, and Shu Yun was so startled by this cold look that she hiccuped.
Zhong Yan's voice was cold: "Don't you understand what you should and shouldn't say? She's so old, yet she still doesn't understand. She's still known as Mrs. Zhong."
Talking about Ji Tanyuan is tantamount to talking about Zhong Yan, isn't it? Even if he doesn't like her, Ji Tanyuan is still his wife in name only, and anyone who offends her is slapping him in the face.
Zhong Yan put down the cup with a click, and the room fell silent. No one dared to provoke him. "I don't really have anything in common with you, Shuyun. You're angry about my wedding? Who do you think you are? When did it become your place to tell my wife what to do? Don't let others use you as a tool."
Zhong Yan has a sharp tongue, as everyone in the industry knows. This isn't the first time Shu Yun has been criticized by him; she's used to it and even sees it as a sign of their familiarity and intimacy. But now, Zhong Yan has said such hurtful things to his wife, whom he's been married to for less than three months, which has truly hurt Shu Yun deeply.
The others at the table also felt that Zhong Yan's words were harsh today. "Ah Yan, that's enough. Shu Yun just hasn't gotten used to it yet."
“I’m used to it,” Zhong Yan said. He was used to not being single anymore.
After Zhong Yan finished speaking, he took the shawl from Ji Tanyuan's back, opened the door, and was right in front of Ji Tanyuan.
Ji Tanyuan quickly put on a smile and naturally took the other person's arm, "Are you leaving?"
Zhong Yan showed no embarrassment, maintaining his composed demeanor. His height of 188cm complemented Ji Tanyuan's 175cm height, even with her wearing high heels, making them a perfect match.
After the two left, Shuyun's sobs could be heard on the table. Rongxi comforted her softly, "That's enough. You said you belittled his wife in front of him. Wasn't that a slap in his face? Even if there's no love, a husband and wife share the same dignity."
Shuyun wiped away her tears, still choking back sobs, "I just slapped him in the face, I hate him."
Ji Tanyuan's first words after getting into the car were:
"I don't want any scandals involving you during our marriage that could affect the stability of our family's union."
It's straightforward, without any concealment or euphemism.
"What, can't keep up the act anymore?" Zhong Yan asked, somewhat amused.
"Don't worry, I don't have a penchant for cheating."
He sat on the other side and turned to look over:
Are you jealous?
Ji Tanyuan met his gaze: "Yes, my husband is too attractive, I feel panicked."
Zhong Yan chuckled and pretended to be dead. "It's alright, there's no need to panic. The Zhong family needs a virtuous and sensible daughter-in-law like you. No one else can do it."
“Although feudalism is unacceptable, my grandmother lived through the feudal era. When the reform and opening up took place, she wasn’t informed. She’s already halfway to the grave, and her mind can’t take in new things anymore, so please bear with her,” Zhong Yan said.
Ji Tanyuan looked at the road ahead and said, "I understand."
Zhong Yan: "There's a business banquet in a week, so let's make time for it."
Ji Tanyuan suddenly said, as if she had just remembered something: "The chairman's wife of Tianzheng Group just called to invite me to dinner. She said it was about the change of Tianzheng's equity or something. I didn't understand the specifics, but she asked me to ask you if it would be okay if I could meet with her husband another day."
After she finished speaking, she looked up and glanced at Zhong Yan's profile. His angular face revealed no emotion.
Zhong Yan looked at the road ahead, and upon hearing this, said calmly, "You don't understand?"
"Ms. Ji, who holds a double degree in Business Analytics and Finance from MIT, doesn't understand equity structure? Ji Tanyuan, did you just play around in college?"
"Was your diploma obtained through a donation from your father?"
Ji Tanyuan sighed. Who was this person mocking? Did she need his sarcasm? "Are you kidding me? I graduated on my own merit."
"...I just lack experience in this area. Who do you think you are?"
"Besides, I haven't even mentioned you yet. I haven't even said you're the husband of the 'Grand Mansion,' and you're still criticizing me? Please, we're both equally bad."
Zhong Yan raised an eyebrow, his handsome features illuminated by the neon lights of the night, making him almost unrealistically dashing. He grinned mischievously at Ji Tanyuan, leaned down, and touched her face. With her features magnified in front of him, he could see Ji Tanyuan's distinct eyelashes.
He pinched her chin and shook her head, a gesture that had a flirtatious undertone.
“Then I also weigh eight ounces, three ounces more than you, you weigh half a pound.”
Ji Tanyuan: "..."
Ji Tanyuan was stunned. "You're insulting me?"
Zhong Yan didn't react for a moment, then realized that half a jin was 250 grams.
Ji Tanyuan slapped his hand away. Who does this guy think he is?
