"Either is fine," Lu Wujiu said.
Su Jiaoniang got busy.
Lu Wujiu sat in front of the stove, helping to tend the fire. Dust rose in the kitchen, staining his clean clothes with soot, but Lu Wujiu didn't care much and continued with what he was doing.
Just then, Granny Tang from the county town knocked on the gate of the small courtyard.
As Su Jiaoniang walked out, Granny Tang smiled and handed her the documents in her hand: "Our lady's cake shop will open tomorrow, and she said you are one of the owners, so you should go and take a look."
"Alright, Granny, come in and have some hot water." Frost fell, turning the ground white.
The air was chilly.
It must have been quite difficult for her to come to the village from the county town. Tang Pozi was indeed cold and hungry. Seeing how expectant the lady was, she came to the village without eating anything.
Following them into the main room, they ate two soufflés and drank a bowl of hot tea. Granny Tang looked at the small courtyard where Su Jiaoniang lived with great admiration. Although there were no artificial hills, ponds, or flowing water in the courtyard, it was built with a unique charm.
There were no flowers in the small courtyard, the eggplants that had been hit by the autumn frost had split open, and the jujube tree had lost all its leaves, giving it a somewhat desolate appearance.
But there was a hanging chair on the ground, with a small cushion scattered on it and a book on it, which added a touch of leisure to the place.
"It's so beautiful!" Granny Tang muttered as she left the courtyard.
Su Jiaoniang glanced at the bright red invitation a few times and placed it in the room. She then continued preparing the meal.
The next morning, Su Jiaoniang headed towards the county town.
She hadn't forgotten her plans. With the cake shop opening, wealthy families in the county would all patronize it. At this time, she needed to advertise the flower-wrapping at the orphanage for the disabled. Passing by the orphanage, she picked up a few flower-wrapping hairpins. For such a prosperous occasion, she naturally needed some flamboyant and bright red ones.
She arrived at the Cai family home carrying a set of exquisite red peony hairpins.
At this moment, Madam Feng was doing her hair, and the floral hairpin that Su Jiaoniang brought was just the right fit.
"So exquisite." Madam Feng stared at the hairpin that Su Jiaoniang had brought, her beautiful eyes sparkling.
The maidservant beside her helped Madam Feng put on her hairpins, giving her an air of wealth and nobility. Wearing a purple dress, she exuded a commanding presence.
Su Jiaoniang stared at the hairpin that looked both real and fake, a smile appearing on her lips. The hairpin was very beautiful.
Madam Feng casually ate two small steamed buns and followed Su Jiaoniang outside. As they passed the garden path, a voice came from behind: "Sister-in-law, if you want to start your own business, why not find a family member to partner with? Why find an outsider?"
A woman with her hair styled in a bun and dressed in emerald green emerged from around the corner of the garden; she was quite beautiful.
Su Jiaoniang saw her and was speechless.
Who is this?
Cai, the wife of the young master of Magistrate Hu.
Because of a roommate who made life unbearable for Wang the carpenter.
This person is very petty.
"Alright, you can leave now. The shop's affairs have nothing to do with you. You're covered in mud and smell awful. You want to climb up a social class and become a shopkeeper? Don't you even look at yourself in the mirror?" Cai Runiang covered her nose with a handkerchief.
How could Madam Feng allow Su Jiaoniang to suffer such injustice?
He glanced at Granny Tang and said, "Go and get a mirror. Let my little sister take a good look at herself. She'll forget what she looks like if she doesn't look in the mirror."
With Cai Runiang's looks, ten of them combined couldn't compare to Su Jiaoniang.
What a muddy, sour smell! These days, a businessman's status is lower than that of a farmer.
"Feng, who are you letting look in the mirror? A singer has had good luck and actually thinks she's something..." Cai Runiang didn't say a word before she was slapped across the face.
Madam Feng rubbed her palms, stared at Cai Runiang, and said slowly, word by word, "I am a daughter-in-law of the Cai family. You are just a married-out daughter. If you offend me, be careful you won't have a family to support you in the future." After saying that, she walked outside.
Su Jiaoniang walked past Cai Runiang, pausing for a moment.
She pointed to the lotus pond beside her: "Or, why don't you go look in the mirror over there?"
A bland face, nothing special, nothing to brag about. You should just focus on cultivating your mind. You've developed a sharp and mean heart. You have nothing to offer, so what are you barking about here?
“You…you jinxed little widow…” Cai’s voice echoed in the garden.
"A jinx, a little widow?" Su Jiaoniang was displeased.
She lives such a hard life not to invite criticism.
Staring at Cai Runiang: "Your face is pale, your breathing is unsteady, you are depressed, and there is a bluish tinge between your brows. It seems you haven't been well-loved in a long time. I am indeed a widow, but it's still better than you living a life of widowhood."
As soon as Su Jiaoniang finished speaking, she quickly followed Madam Feng's footsteps. She didn't want Cai Runiang's sour words to pollute her ears.
As they walked out the door with Madam Feng, she suddenly said, "That man is very stingy. Tell your family to be careful so that he doesn't take it out on you."
“I know,” Su Jiaoniang nodded.
She has been in this world for some time now.
Knowing how she should live her life, she never deliberately causes trouble, but if someone tries to pick a fight, she won't let herself be bullied for no reason.
As she walked into the cake shop, a look of satisfaction flashed in Su Jiaoniang's eyes.
Beautiful cakes are displayed in glass cabinets, so you can see their appearance from the outside. There are big ones, small ones, and even ones cut into small triangles. You can have whatever kind of cake you want.
This is the first time such a transparent glass display case has been seen in Lucheng.
Sure enough, making cakes, soaps, wine, ice, and paper were essential skills for time travel, and fortunately, she had mastered most of them.
otherwise……
Su Jiaoniang shook her head, a smile on her lips, and followed Madam Feng to see the upper-class ladies of Lucheng.
