Chapter 416: Efficacy
For two days in a row, Nanny Wu delivered medicine to Yu Lingxiu without fail.
At noon on the third day, the sun shone through the carved window lattices, casting patches of light and shadows on the ground.
As usual, Nanny Wu hurried towards Yu Lingxiu's room carrying a medicine jar.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Yu Lingxiu got out of bed by herself and was moving slowly while holding the edge of the table.
Upon seeing this, Nanny Wu hurried forward and supported Yu Lingxiu steadily. Her face was full of concern and surprise. She said, "Why did you come down here by yourself today? You didn't even ask anyone to wait on you."
Yu Lingxiu smiled with relief and said softly, "Mammy, I feel like my legs aren't hurting that much anymore, so I thought I'd get down and move around. My body is going to get stiff if I lie down all the time."
As she spoke, her eyes fell on the food box in Madam Wu's hand, and a hint of resistance flashed in her eyes, "Madam, look, can I not drink this medicine today? I have drunk it for several meals in a row, and it tastes too bitter. It makes my throat bitter."
Nanny Wu patted Yu Lingxiu's hand gently and advised earnestly, "Oh, young lady, good medicine tastes bitter but is good for the disease. You have to continue taking this medicine. The court doctor specifically told you to take it for at least seven days to completely cure the disease."
As he spoke, he helped Yu Lingxiu sit down beside the bed, and then handed the medicine bowl to her, "How about this, after you finish drinking today's dose, I will go ask the court doctor. If he says it's okay to stop, we will stop immediately without any delay, okay?"
Yu Lingxiu took the medicine bowl, a look of gratitude appeared on her face, and she said, "Mammy, you are so thoughtful. I am grateful for your hard work in taking care of me these days."
After saying that, he picked up the medicine bowl, frowned, and drank the bitter medicine in one gulp.
Ever since Nanny Wu finished serving Yu Lingxiu, she felt as if a heavy stone was pressing on her heart, and she could not sit still or feel uneasy.
She was well aware of Yu Lingxiu's leg disease. The court doctor's solemn words that "the legs will be extremely painful" were still echoing in her ears, but now Yu Lingxiu could actually get out of bed and walk?
Nanny Wu was extremely anxious. She walked quickly, her skirt causing a gust of wind, and soon she arrived at the palace doctor's residence.
She pushed open the door abruptly, completely disregarding her usual etiquette, stared at the court doctor, and asked, "Didn't you tell me before that Yu Lingxiu's legs would be in unbearable pain? How come she can get out of bed and walk now?"
The court doctor raised his head slowly, the corners of his mouth slightly raised, revealing a meaningful smile, and said slowly: "If I don't let her try it first, she won't think of me when her legs are not well later!"
As soon as these words were spoken, the doubts in Nanny Wu's heart not only did not disappear, but became even stronger.
She stared at the court physician intently, trying to find a flaw on his face, but the court physician looked calm, as if everything was under his control.
Nanny Wu thought to herself that this matter must not be let go so easily.
So she decided to stay in Yu Lingxiu's yard and find out what was going on.
As night fell, darkness covered the entire yard like a huge curtain.
Nanny Wu hid in a dark corner of the yard, staring at Yu Lingxiu's room without blinking.
It was late at night, everything was quiet, and the whole yard seemed to have fallen into a deep sleep.
Suddenly, a painful groan came from Yu Lingxiu's room.
Nanny Wu's heart suddenly skipped a beat. She immediately stood up and rushed towards the room.
When I pushed open the door, I saw Yu Lingxiu twitching in pain on the bed, her hands tightly hugging her knees, her face covered with beads of sweat, and she looked particularly pale under the dim candlelight.
"Miss, what's wrong with you?"
Yu Lingxiu was in so much pain that she couldn't speak, and she just shook her head desperately.
Nanny Wu finally believed the doctor's words. She was satisfied, but she didn't show it on her face. She said deliberately, "Wait a minute, young lady. I'll go get the doctor to check you out!"
After saying that, he turned around hurriedly and called for help.
When Nanny Wu called the court physician, she saw that Yu Lingxiu had fainted from the pain.
Nanny Wu, who had a look of heartache just now, now asked the court doctor to wake the man up with an expressionless face.
The court doctor quickly took out a special pill from the medicine box, gently stuffed it into Yu Lingxiu's mouth, and fed her some warm water. After a long while, Yu Lingxiu slowly woke up, groaning weakly.
"Miss, you are finally awake. I was so scared!" Nanny Wu squeezed out a few tears hypocritically. There was some concern in her voice, but there was no warmth in her eyes.
Yu Lingxiu said weakly, "Mammy, I'm in so much pain, what's going on?"
Nanny Wu glanced at the court doctor and winked. The court doctor understood and stepped forward and said, "Young lady, I have done my best to heal your leg. I am afraid that this kind of pain will occur every three or two days in the future! But you are lucky to be able to stand up!"
Yu Lingxiu slumped on the couch, cold sweat oozing from her forehead. The piercing pain just now seemed to still be raging in her bones.
She was still frightened, her voice trembling slightly: "Really... Is there really no other way?"
The look in his eyes when he looked towards the court doctor was full of pleading and despair.
The court doctor stood aside and shook his head slowly.
His eyes wandered freely over Yu Lingxiu, with a malicious look in them.
Then, he deliberately pretended to be concerned and reached out to massage Yu Lingxiu's legs.
His hands caressed Yu Lingxiu's legs wantonly, seemingly treating her seriously, but actually taking the opportunity to take advantage of her. While doing so, he asked, "Do you feel anything on your legs?"
At this time, the light in the room was dim, and the candlelight in the corner flickered, adding a bit of weirdness to the depressing atmosphere.
Nanny Wu stood quietly by, watching all the court doctor's little movements.
Her eyes flickered, but she didn't expose anything. Her face was full of false concern as she stared at Yu Lingxiu.
Yu Lingxiu just felt that something was strange, but the severe pain from her legs was like a surging tide, one wave after another, leaving her no time to care about anything else.
She could only shake her head in pain, her voice tearing up as she said, "My legs hurt, and I don't feel anything else."
Every word seemed to be squeezed out from between teeth, and the whole person seemed to be drained of strength by the pain.
The court doctor reluctantly withdrew his hand, sighed pretentiously, and shook his head again, as if declaring that Yu Lingxiu's leg was beyond cure.
Yu Lingxiu instantly fell into extreme panic, her breathing became rapid, and her eyes were full of helplessness.
She struggled to look at Nanny Wu, tightly grasping her sleeves with both hands, and begged bitterly: "Mammy, please ask the princess to ask the imperial physician to come and see me! I don't want to live like this for the rest of my life, Mammy, please..."
Nanny Wu patted Yu Lingxiu's hand gently, her face still showing concern, but her words were like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing Yu Lingxiu's last hope: "This court doctor used to work in the Imperial Hospital, and his medical skills are obvious to all. He said there is no other way, but there really is no other way!"
