Chapter 468: Nanny Wu Kills
Cui Xi lowered her eyes to look at the moss in the cracks of the blue bricks, and heard the crisp sound of a jade ring hitting the rosewood table above her head.
“As long as the prince can give me a place to stay, it will be fine!” Cui Xi clenched her sleeves tightly, her knuckles turning white.
She tried to make her voice tremble, like the wings of a butterfly wet by the rain, but when she caught a glimpse of Beigong You's furrowed brows out of the corner of her eye, her eyelashes trembled imperceptibly.
Beigong You leaned against the ebony Panlong chair, and the cloud patterns embroidered on his black brocade robe appeared and disappeared with his movements.
He picked up the teacup and sipped it gently. The tea soup reflected the kneeling woman's lowered face. "I heard that you are now a capable person beside the eldest princess!"
Before he finished speaking, the teacup knocked heavily on the rosewood table, filling the room with the aroma of tea.
Cui Xi's shoulders trembled violently, and she immediately covered her face and sobbed, "Your Highness, you don't know that I was brought out by Nanny Wu."
She deliberately revealed the pale blue bruises on her wrists, her voice choked with sobs, "It was because Nanny Wu was injured that I was lucky enough to serve the princess. But when she came back from her injury, she said that I coveted the position of mistress and made things difficult for her every day..."
Beigong You looked at the woman who seemed about to cry, and stroked the jade pendant at his waist with his bony fingers.
Just as Cui Xi lowered her head to wipe her tears, he gave a look to Feng Ming who was standing beside him.
Feng Ming nodded slightly, and the sound of his boots stepping on the blue bricks gradually disappeared at the end of the corridor.
"The princess is nostalgic and sides with Nanny Wu. I am really left with nowhere else to go..." Cui Xi's crying stopped abruptly.
Beigong You suddenly slammed the table and stood up. The jade paperweight fell to the ground with a thud, exploding a crisp echo in the silence: "Shut up!"
A chill crept up Cui Xi's neck. She bit her lower lip tightly and caught a glimpse of the half-dried water stains on the jade pendant on Prince Ning's waist - they were splashed when the teacup fell over just now.
Outside the carved window, the crow's cry pierced the sky, startling the dead leaves in the yard.
After an unknown amount of time, Feng Ming's footsteps came closer again.
The rosewood armrests made regular sounds when tapped by Beigong You's fingertips, like the beat of a life-threatening drum.
"Say what you just said again."
Cui Xi's hands, which were tightly grasping the hem of her skirt, were shaking slightly, and the hibiscus pattern embroidered with gold thread was wrinkled in her palms.
She took a deep breath, a rusty sweetness rising in her throat, and lowered her eyes to hide the fleeting calculations in her eyes. "Your Majesty, allow me to report..."
Her voice was gentle and tearful, and she slowly uttered the words that she had memorized by heart. When she got to the emotional part, she suddenly raised her hand and untied the silver hairpin in her hair.
The silver hairpin glowed with a cold light, and the moment it passed across her palm, she bit her lower lip and groaned.
Blood dripped down the tip of the hairpin, and a charming red plum blossom bloomed on the blue brick. The winding bloodstains were very much like her rough fate. "If there is even a single lie, then this hairpin will do! If the prince has any orders, I am willing to be a toy to relieve boredom; if the princess is not pleased, I will immediately disappear from this world!"
The ending tone was tearful, but every word was sonorous.
Beigong You supported his chin with one hand and stared at the resolute woman in front of him with interest.
Her pale face was covered in cold sweat and blood, but her stubborn eyes revealed a sense of loneliness and courage.
Suddenly, he chuckled, and the sound echoed in the empty hall, startling the birds perched on the beams and causing them to fly away. "What do you think, Madam Wu?"
Cui Xi’s whole body stiffened and she turned back suddenly.
The carved wooden door creaked open and Nanny Wu walked in slowly, leaning on an ebony cane. Her bound foot shoes, revealed under her moon-white cotton skirt, stepped over a pool of blood, leaving dark footprints on the blue bricks.
The wrinkles on the old nanny's face were as sharp as knife cuts. Her cloudy eyes swept across Cui Xi's bloody palm and she snorted coldly: "Your Highness can deal with this person who is trying to curry favor with the rich and powerful in any way you want!"
Beigong You stroked the jade pendant on his waist and asked casually, "What about the eldest princess..."
"You are the eldest princess's son, and the owner of this princess's mansion!" Nanny Wu raised her voice and slammed her cane on the ground. "If you want to punish someone, the princess will have no objection!"
Seeing that Beigong You still had a cold face, she sighed and softened her tone: "Prince, the princess has always been concerned about you! It's just that you have been a hostage in another country for these years, and the princess herself has no choice. The princess..."
"I came here to find you, not to listen to you say these things!" Beigong You stood up suddenly, his brocade robe swept across the desk, and the pens, ink, paper and inkstone fell to the ground with a clatter.
He looked down at Cui Xi with murderous intent in his eyes, "This lowly maid also said that she has an old friend of the princess! But I heard that she has been staying in the mansion. I am curious, where did she find the old friend of the princess?"
Cui Xi's knees had already become numb from kneeling, and now she felt as if she were falling into an ice cellar.
She forced herself to raise her head and looked at the sinister eyes of Nanny Wu behind Beigong You. She suddenly realized that the plan she had carefully designed might have been exposed to these two people from the very beginning.
Cui Xi's knees were numb but she dared not move an inch. Cold sweat ran down her spine into her collar. She suddenly caught a glimpse of a cold light flashing from Nanny Wu's sleeves and blurted out, "It's the princess..."
The voice stopped abruptly.
The stinging pain from the red hairpin piercing her throat caused her pupils to shrink suddenly, and warm blood dripped through the gaps between Nanny Wu's dry fingers.
The old nanny pulled back the bloodstained hairpin expressionlessly, turned around and knelt straight, "This old servant is rude, I cannot bear to see anyone slandering the princess's reputation."
Beigong You sneered: "Very good, kill someone in front of me! Feng Ming suppress her!"
