The two got out of the car. The night breeze caressed their faces, indescribably cool and pleasant, filled with tenderness.
The poor lighting at night significantly reduced the risk of being recognized. Shang Yechu was finally able to briefly remove her mask and breathe freely.
Shang Yechu and Ji Juntao strolled in the gentle breeze. Ji Juntao picked his teeth as he said, "Shi Shan didn't do anything. This is unlike him."
"What do you mean? You're afraid he'll do something to me, but you also resent him for not doing anything?"
Ji Juntao shook his head: "His overtures to you prove you have a chance at the role. But his attitude at dinner tonight makes me a little uncertain..."
"Don't think about it so much," Shang Yechu comforted Ji Juntao instead. "What's the point of Shi Shan inviting a female actress who has no acting opportunities to dinner? Is it because the chicken breast and leafy greens at that restaurant are delicious?"
“That’s true.” Ji Juntao decided to stop thinking about it. “Anyway, there’s no chance with Wei Xuan, otherwise the Champions wouldn’t be jumping around like this lately.”
After walking a few more steps, Shang Yechu's stomach growled loudly.
"Gurgle—"
"Hungry?" Ji Juntao said with amusement. "What were you pretending to be, this self-disciplined female star? Watching me eat must have made your heart bleed."
Shang Yechu groaned, "I feel like I'll starve to death before I can make it to the company."
Ji Juntao patted his pocket: "I only have mints to keep me alert."
Shang Yechu stopped and looked to the side, exclaiming with delight, "There's a dessert shop here! Quick, quick, go buy me something to eat!"
Ji Juntao glanced to the side and saw that she and Shang Yechu had stopped in front of a Chinese pastry shop called "Lanxiang Shi". This shop was very famous in Ruguan, and even so late, there was still a long queue at the checkout area.
Ji Juntao was unwilling to move: "Why don't you go yourself?"
Shang Yechu pointed to her face: "I wasn't wearing a mask."
The store was brightly lit; if Shang Yechu went in to buy something, she might be recognized.
"Okay. What do you want to eat?" Ji Juntao asked reluctantly.
"Orchid cake, sweet fruit, wafting custard buns..." Shang Yechu glanced at the snacks on the shop sign and rattled off seven or eight items in one breath.
"I'll eat you to death!" Ji Juntao exclaimed in surprise. "Aren't you afraid of getting as fat as a pig?"
Shang Yechu said with ease, "I'll make you a midnight snack if you can't finish it. Aunt Cai hasn't eaten either."
These two reasons convinced Ji Juntao. She pouted and muttered, "Fine. Then you wait here for me, I'll be right back. So troublesome..."
"It'll help me digest," Shang Yechu said with a smile.
Ji Juntao shook his head and impatiently plunged into Lanxiangshi Pastry Shop.
The shop was crowded. Ji Juntao tried hard to recall the seven or eight kinds of pastries Shang Yechu had ordered, and finally just took one of each. While queuing to pay with a large tray full of pastries, he was frequently given strange looks.
Ji Juntao looked impatiently at the long queue ahead, thinking to himself that he had no idea when he would be able to pay. Shang Yechu was just someone who talked without understanding the situation.
Having cursed Shang Yechu countless times in his heart, Ji Juntao finally got to pay the bill. Ji Juntao placed the tray on the checkout counter, and the waiter used delicate wooden clips to calculate the price of each item. The numbers on the monitor kept changing, and Ji Juntao caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye and was suddenly startled.
Before anyone knew it, Shang Yechu, who had been standing outside the door, had vanished!
Ji Juntao immediately forgot about the snacks he was paying for and stumbled out. He saw a familiar black luxury car parked not far away, and Shang Yechu was standing by the car door.
That's Shi Shan's car!
"Shang Yechu!" Ji Juntao exclaimed in shock, and rushed towards Shang Yechu. Unfortunately, her high heels slowed her down, and she could only watch helplessly as Shang Yechu opened the car door.
Ji Juntao was so angry that she was like a Buddha emerging from the heavens and a Buddha entering Nirvana. She bent down, threw off one of her high heels, and smashed it over Shang Yechu's head!
Shang Yechu deftly blocked the shot, and the high heel grazed the back of her hand before falling to the ground.
Shang Yechu touched the back of her hand, then made a "bye-bye" gesture, smiled, and got into the car.
Ji Juntao roared, "Shang Yechu, you bastard! If you dare leave today, don't ever come back!"
The only response to Ji Juntao was the car speeding away, and Shang Yechu's cheerful reply drifting out of the car window:
"Boss, don't forget to settle the bill."
