Shang Yechu's heart began to race.
"The Godless" - Cheng Xiaoling
Shang Yechu felt a wave of dizziness. "Godless" was a mainland Chinese film, and given the nature of the Ying Shi Film Festival, a mainland Chinese film could only be nominated once for each award. In other words…
"The Age of Whale Fall" - Haruka Kimura
"The Witness at Dusk - Kim Hye-ah".
"Heart of the Desert - Nina Meyer"
Gu Wenhua hesitated for a moment, then gently pressed down on the corner of Shang Yechu's sleeve, comforting her, "Yechu..."
"The Mute Woman" - Ye Chu
The name "Ye Chu" on the screen overlapped with Gu Wenhua's "Ye Chu," causing Shang Ye Chu to be momentarily stunned.
"What are you standing there for!" Ji Juntao suddenly yelled, grabbing Shang Yechu by the back of the collar and lifting her up. "Idiot, you've been nominated!"
"ah!"
Shang Yechu suddenly realized what was happening, yelled, and almost kicked over the coffee table!
Ji Juntao shook Shang Yechu's shoulder with wild joy: "Three thousand yuan! Three thousand yuan! Yechu! The three thousand yuan I've ever spent in my life was the most worthwhile! Yechu! Awesome! You idiot, you are the light of the Chinese entertainment industry, the star of tomorrow!"
Shang Yechu glanced back at the screen in disbelief. The page for Best Supporting Actress had already flashed by, and now the award for Best Original Screenplay was being announced.
“You nominated him, Ye Chu.” Gu Wenhua stood up, rubbing his hands nervously. “You see, what I just said wasn’t entirely correct. It’s not that others are incompetent because you are, but rather that others are incompetent because you are so capable…”
It would have been better if he hadn't said it. As soon as he said that, half of the emotions that Ji Juntao had just forcibly stirred up in Shang Yechu immediately died down.
Shang Yechu's paranoia struck again.
What is this? A consolation prize?
Is it really because Shang Yechu is so capable?
Shang Yechu had seen most of the films in the final selection. Some films had few female characters, and in others, it seemed the investors had filled in the roles, resulting in less-than-stellar performances from the supporting actresses.
Could it be because of these reasons that Shang Yechu was squeezed in to make up the numbers?
Shang Yechu has been making comedies for over a decade without ever winning an award. This nomination is a first for him.
After a brief period of euphoria, a deeper sense of doubt and trepidation washed over me—was this nomination really given to me because of my good acting skills? Or was it something that others didn't want?
If my acting skills were truly passable, how come I've been making comedies for over a decade and haven't even touched the base of an award trophy?
"Yes. I've nominated him," Shang Yechu said with a forced smile. "We can rest assured now."
Ji Juntao glared at Gu Wenhua, wishing he could skin the boy alive.
Gu Wenhua felt a chill run down her spine, wondering what she had said wrong again.
Isn't that right? — There's already a mainland film nominated. Ye Chu's inclusion proves that her nomination wasn't just for show, but based on her talent... He wasn't wrong.
Shi Shan glanced at Gu Wenhua, a look in his eyes that Gu Wenhua couldn't understand.
Before Gu Wenhua could decipher the meaning in that look, Shi Shan gently supported Shang Yechu's arm and pulled her away from Ji Juntao's grasp.
Ji Juntao, unusually, remained silent and did not stop him. He simply glared at Gu Wenhua with sharp eyes, making the latter uneasy.
Shi Shan helped Shang Yechu sit on the sofa and said softly, "It's rare to get a nomination for your first film. As far as I know, you're the first one without guidance from a big director."
Shi Shan didn't even glance at Gu Wenhua, but his words made Gu Wenhua very uncomfortable: "Little Gu is a newcomer. You are a newcomer too. This is quite rare, Ye Chu."
These words made Shang Yechu feel a little more at ease.
"The Mute Woman" had no famous screenwriters or directors; it was a makeshift crew put together by Ji Juntao. If the organizers were simply choosing a lucky film to make up the numbers for the sake of appearances, they should have chosen films with big budgets and renowned directors.
Although the reasoning was clear, the possibility of "choosing the best among the worst" still loomed over my mind like a dark cloud, refusing to dissipate.
Shang Yechu didn't want to be the tallest among the short.
Shang Ye initially wanted to become a giant.
Seeing this, Shi Shan sighed softly and sat down on the armrest of the sofa next to Shang Yechu. He said slowly, "Director Xu has been working hard these past few days to collect your past acting materials and online reviews to show to the people at Ruguan TV."
Shang Yechu's eyes lit up.
“No evaluation is as valuable as a nomination.” Shi Shan patted Shang Yechu on the shoulder. “How are you feeling?”
