Chapter 288 The Machine (1/2)

The rendezvous with Tianguang-1 was thus completed in a way that was both laughable and absurd.

Although there were many differences between him and the image described in the materials, the rendezvous signals and actions were correct, which meant that this "Skylight No. 1" was definitely not an imposter. As for the subsequent whispers between Lu Huaizhang and the other party, Li Ruhui could only pretend not to see them.

For work convenience, Li Ruhui quickly moved into Tianguang No. 1. What followed was a long and painful working career for Li Ruhui.

Outside, Tian Guang Yi Hao was an eccentric loner, often doing many surprising things. But in private, she was a rather dull person. She rarely smiled and didn't talk much. The words she spoke most often to Li Ru Hui in private were concise commands, such as "Bring it here" or "Please leave."

This doesn't mean Tianguang No. 1 is cold-hearted; quite the opposite, she's a very gentle person, always speaking politely and using honorifics, saying thank you. This reminded Li Ruhui of his kind-hearted boss.

One of Li Ruhui's daily tasks was to check the two men's residences every day. He would look around for spies and check for listening devices in the houses. This kind of work was easy for him, which made it all the more tedious and agonizing.

Li Ruhui sometimes felt like a nanny who took care of trivial matters, rather than an assistant to Tianguang No. 1.

To the outside world, Li Ruhui's profession was that of a company manager who got in through connections. This job granted him a great deal of freedom; he could travel around when he needed to deliver messages, and he could find an excuse to stay at home when he needed to be on standby.

The life of an undercover agent was completely different from the thrilling accounts of his predecessors that Li Ruhui had learned about at military academy. It was long, repetitive, and utterly tedious. Li Ruhui's only entertainment was observing his superior.

Tianguang-1

Tian Guang No. 1 had terrible taste in clothing; his favorite outfits contained countless hidden pockets. Half of his wardrobe consisted of coarse cloth shirts, military uniforms, and various other clothes that would disappear into a crowd, while the other half was filled with dusty, outdated garments. Li Ruhui often had to open this wardrobe when checking the room for listening devices, and each time he would frown deeply.

Tian Guang No. 1 wasn't picky about food; she ate whatever was available. This was completely opposite to Li Ruhui's meticulous eating habits. She ate like a whirlwind, often swallowing food quickly without even chewing it a few times, like a starving ghost who had just died of fright. Tian Guang No. 1 never urged her on, but Li Ruhui, a grown man, couldn't very well keep her from stopping at the table. So he had no choice but to follow her pace and finish quickly as well.

Although he felt that stomach problems would inevitably afflict the family sooner or later, Li Ruhui viewed it as a necessary sacrifice for the revolution. While at Carter Lane College, he had even eaten rats.

Tian Guang Yi Hao is a light sleeper. To the outside world, Li Ru Hui and Tian Guang Yi Hao are an engaged couple. Fortunately, they are not married, so they can sleep in separate rooms. Tian Guang Yi Hao can adapt to various noisy environments, but shows resistance to extreme silence.

One night, shortly after moving into the same mansion as Tianguang No. 1, Li Ruhui suddenly felt the urge to drink. He used all the experience and knowledge he had gained at military school to sneak silently into the storage room.

But the moment he stepped out of the storage room, a gun was pressed against his waist.

Li Ruhui still remembered the look in Tianguang No. 1's eyes that night, like a leopard's eyes, intently watching its prey in the darkness. In fact, Li Ruhui had the urge to compete with the other party at that time, but he suppressed the impulse for fear of breaking the expensive wine in his hand.

Fortunately, he did not resist. Tianguang No. 1 later said that if he dared to move, she would have shot his leg off.

Tianguang No. 1 walks very fast. When going out with her, Li Ruhui has to keep a close eye on her at all times to prevent her from leaving him behind and disappearing without a trace.

When Tianguang No. 1 was happy—for example, when she heard the organization commend her on the radio—she would quietly walk to the window, draw the curtains, and remain silent for a few seconds facing them.

The area near the window is forbidden territory for secret agents. You never know when or from which corner a bullet might fly through the glass and pierce their forehead or chest. Even drawing the curtains isn't safe. This action was already extremely unusual for Tianguang-1.

When Tianguang No. 1 got angry—and truly angry—Li Ruhui only saw him angry once. That was the time he discovered Tianguang No. 1's alcoholism.
