Chapter 3 Accumulation (2/2)

Beauty points are the last thing Shang Yechu needs right now. However, women often can't resist such temptations, so the system didn't say much and directly gave her the points.

Shang Yechu felt a slight fever, but it was much better than during her first exchange, almost negligible. It seemed the degree of fever during an exchange was related to the total weight gained. Shang Yechu made a note of this.

Shang Yechu wanted to see how she had changed, but she was too sleepy.

The system's control circuitry turned off the lights for Shang Yechu, forcing her into hibernation.

At six o'clock the next morning, Shang Yechu couldn't wait to get up and go to the bathroom to look in the mirror.

She looked almost unchanged in the mirror. Her skin was still dark and yellowish, and her features remained ordinary. Shang Yechu leaned closer to the mirror for a closer look. Finally, she noticed a slight change.

The acne scars on her face seemed to have faded a little.

Shang Yechu: "..."

With 2 beauty points, that's already pretty good. Shang Yechu comforted herself.

After washing up in the bathroom, Grandma Hu came out of the bookstore and was reading a morning newspaper.

"Hey, Xiao Chu, you're out now?"

Grandma Hu adjusted her reading glasses, looking to be in a good mood.

She is a cheerful old lady.

Shang Yechu politely greeted, "Good morning, Grandma."

Grandma Hu said with a smile, "I finally got a good night's sleep last night. I used to worry about thieves breaking into the bookstore at night, but I feel much more at ease with you here."

Shang Yechu gave a wry smile. She knew that Grandma Hu's words were purely to comfort her; the bookstore had a roller shutter, so even without Shang Yechu, no thief would get in.

Grandma Hu seemed to understand her thoughts and said, "Besides, with Xiao Chu around, I can get off work earlier and go home to take care of my grandson. I used to have to stay until ten o'clock."

That's true. From 8 PM to 10 PM is when the film studio closes for the day, the pedestrian street is busiest, and it's also the bookstore's busiest time of day. It would be a shame to close so early.

Shang Yechu then smiled and said, "I'm happy to be able to help Grandma."

Grandma Hu gestured towards the table with her lip: "Breakfast, eat up."

Breakfast consisted of two large steamed buns and a cup of soy milk. Shang Yechu was so hungry that her eyes were practically green, so she didn't stand on ceremony, grabbed a bun, and swallowed it down in a few bites.

It was another meat bun, juicy and fragrant. With a little something in her stomach, Shang Yechu didn't want to wolf down a second one. Instead, she chewed slowly and carefully.

Grandma Hu looked at her and said in surprise, "Why are you so hungry? Eat slowly, be careful not to burn yourself. If you're not full, I'll bring you more at noon."

Shang Yechu swallowed a bite of steamed bun and quickly said, "Grandma, don't save me lunch. I won't be coming back for lunch."

"Not coming back? Where are you going?" Grandma Hu was extremely surprised.

Shang Yechu smiled shyly: "I'm going to the film studio."

Grandma Hu paused for a moment, then couldn't help but scrutinize Shang Yechu.

Grandma Hu: "..."

Grandma Hu never imagined that such an ugly girl would have an acting dream. She had run a bookstore near the film studio for decades and had seen many young people with dreams of becoming stars, some beautiful and some not so beautiful, but none of them were as ordinary as Shang Yechu, the kind of person you could easily miss in a crowd.

Grandma Hu is quite knowledgeable. She came from the era of the "Two Chows, One Jackie, and Four Heavenly Kings" and knows that actors can be outrageously beautiful, or in special circumstances, horribly ugly, but they can never have an average face.

With that kind of face, you're destined to be an extra your whole life.

Grandma Hu hesitated, unwilling to hurt the ugly girl's self-esteem, yet also unable to watch her jump into a fire pit.

Grandma Hu hesitated for a long time before saying, "Girl, I know what you mean. But how difficult is this line of work these days? You might not be successful out of ten thousand people! Take my advice, you're still young, and you're not... too ugly. Find a proper job to make a living."

Shang Yechu had long understood what Grandma Hu was thinking. Because in her past life, Grandma Hu had also given her the same advice.

Shang Yechu smiled and said, "Grandma, thank you. Thank you so much. But my mind is made up."

Good advice is useless against a stubborn fool. Grandma Hu sighed, "Alright. Go ahead. At least you can get something to eat."

She'd seen too many young men and women rush headlong into things like moths to a flame, refusing to learn their lesson until they hit a brick wall and were utterly defeated. They wouldn't wake up until they'd been battered and bruised.

Shang Yechu said, "Grandma, don't worry. I will definitely become a big star."

"You think you can be a big star with looks like that?" Grandma Hu thought to herself, speechless. But she didn't say it aloud. She just nodded weakly.

Just as Shang Yechu was about to leave, she suddenly remembered something and turned back to ask, "Grandma, can I take a book with me? I promise I won't get it dirty or broken. If I do, I'll pay for it."

Grandma Hu thought the child wasn't entirely hopeless, so she pointed to the innermost shelf and said:

"You can take any of the books from those shelves out of the house. They're secondhand anyway, and you wouldn't be able to sell a single one in ages. Just remember to bring them back."

Shang Yechu walked inside and looked at the row of bookshelves. Sure enough, they were filled with tattered old books. They smelled musty, and some were already yellowed. The types were also very mixed, piled together haphazardly without any classification. There were world classics as well as outdated romance novels, divination books and reference books, some old magazines, and even a few old almanacs.

Shang Yechu glanced at it a few times, then pulled out a copy of "How the Steel Was Tempered," put it in the plastic bag that had contained steamed buns yesterday, and took it with him.
