Chapter 625 Who is the Winner (Two Chapters Combined) (2/2)

Lin Hao was an accomplice in her plan. When Wu Jianing delivered meals to Master Mei, Lin Hao acted as her alibi; when Wu Jianing was mixing poison, Lin Hao acted as a lookout under the guise of a date; and incidentally, he helped Wu Jianing divert the suspicion of that despicable detective.

Unfortunately, Wu Jianing thought herself incredibly clever, but she couldn't withstand the ruthlessness of Master Mei, who couldn't wait to stab her in the back.

The flashback ends with Wu Jianing and Lin Hao standing on the bridge, enjoying the scenery together.

"Once your father is buried and everything settles down, let's leave this place, okay?"

Why leave?

"The New Party is going to break in, and the Mei family will not have a good ending."

"Okay, I'll go with you wherever you go."

Wu Jia covered her mouth excitedly with the plum juice.

Oh my god! She thought Ningning was just a background character in this episode, but things took an unexpected turn!

Overwhelmed with indescribable excitement, Wu Jiawumeizhi quickly opened Notepad, deleted the rights protection lines she had just typed out, and replaced them with lines praising Wu Jianing, which she then pasted into the bullet comments.

[Ugh, Wu Jianing's smile is giving me the creeps!]

[A stunning plot twist!]

Wu Jianing's acting is amazing! I didn't even realize it at the beginning!

Lin Hao was indeed completely smitten with Ningning~

On the screen, ignoring Ye Chu's desperate cries and protests, the production team sent two Grim Reapers to cruelly put an angel halo on Ye Chu and even thoughtfully made a noodle-tears animation for her.

Mei Yaohong patted her shoulder affectionately, and Ye Chu dramatically threw herself into Mei Yaohong's arms, tears streaming down her face, while trying to cling to Mei Yaohong's angelic aura with her own.

This childish behavior naturally sparked another round of laughter in the comments section. Many people recorded the scene and turned it into a GIF, adding various captions such as "I'm dying of laughter," "The blows of life," and "XXX is real," which became widely circulated.

To fans and viewers, Ye Chu seems exceptionally intelligent, just incredibly unlucky, making her both funny and pitiful. Only those in the know can see how cleverly this "variety show plot" was designed.

There is a quote in "The Screenwriter's Guide": "One rule that is consistent with human nature is: we don't want to see anyone, even the most down-on-their-luck character, always be the winner."

This theorem also applies to variety shows. Shang Yechu has already completed the most crucial and brilliant part of the reasoning, demonstrating her intellectual superiority in deduction. If she continues to advance triumphantly and dominate the game, it would seem a bit ostentatious. It would cause the audience to lose empathy, or even identify with her as an opponent.

Everything should be done in moderation. The original cast members of "Happiness Street Detective" are, after all, regular guests, and the audience will naturally favor them. If Shang Yechu doesn't restrain herself, stigmas like "greasy," "pretentious," and "script-reciting" will likely follow her overwhelming success.

A clever but unfortunate slacker, a detective who gets the truth but loses everything—this is the niche that Shang Yechu sets for himself in "Detective of Happy Street".

With everything settled, the guests gathered together.

Fatty Zhang spoke up: "So how did you all die?"

“Actually,” Wu Jianing said, laughing and crying, “the production team assigned us tasks. For example, my task was to ‘deliver food to Mr. Mei,’ and Ms. Mei’s task was to ‘steal the will.’ The tasks had to be completed. As a result, we died when we went there.”

Huang Feizhang added, "That's right, my mission was also to 'find the classified document.' But they didn't give me a single clue, forcing me to search everywhere aimlessly. To be honest, I still don't know where this damn document is."

Everyone turned to look at Ye Chu.

Ye Chu was drinking a herbal tea beverage sponsored by an advertiser to cool down when she saw everyone looking at her. She pouted and said, "Don't look at me, I'm dead."

Fatty Zhang laughed and said, "That's perfect. You can ask Master Mei over there where he hid that thing."

"Hmm," Ye Chu put down her flower tea, "Well... speaking of which, has Master Mei undergone an autopsy?"

Everyone was taken aback. Ye Chu touched the tip of her nose and said, "Do you all remember why Chef Zhang made a special meal for Master Mei?"

Fatty Zhang blurted out, "Master Mei hasn't had much of an appetite lately...!"

Fatty Zhang shivered.

Holy crap, I'm getting goosebumps.

[Type 1 and you'll be just as quick-witted in your next life.]

[Oh my god, I skipped the progress bar, and all that stuff Mr. Mei is eating is soft, mushy porridge or soup. He still has all his teeth, and suddenly he's eating liquid food every day...]

[What does this mean? I don't understand. Why is everyone looking confused?]

[The show's premise wouldn't be baseless. Don't spy dramas often feature this kind of plot? They print classified documents on microfilm or something similar, seal them in a special device, and swallow them. Then they expel them later.]

Huang Feizhang sighed, "I'm convinced, I'm truly convinced. I should have gone to perform the autopsy on the first day!"

Zhuang Sheng stared at Ye Chu, his expression one of astonishment.

"Alright, the snow outside has stopped. Let's go out." Ye Chu stood up, stretched, and accidentally knocked her angel halo askew.

“Actually, you can take this off,” Zhuang Sheng said, looking at her. “You only died in the game, not in the story.”

Shang Yechu calmly said, "It's snowing heavily outside, this thing will keep you warm."

Several living people and a few ghosts walked out of the Mei Mansion, and when they saw the scene outside the mansion, they were all stunned.

Before them lay a vast expanse of white snow. Yet, the snow on the main street outside the mansion had been swept away sometime earlier. The wet stone slabs were filled with people. Some were clutching guns, others were wrapped in cotton clothes and blankets, all huddled up asleep in the street. The only thing they had in common was that they were all wearing military uniforms.

The sunlight shone on the snow and onto the soldiers' faces, giving them an almost translucent, smooth appearance.

During the three days and three nights of wind and snow at Mei Mansion, the New Party stormed into the old city.

This victorious army is now sleeping on the street outside the Mei Mansion.

The ghosts and people in the Mei Mansion suddenly remembered that in some propaganda documents they had seen by chance, the New Party had a rule of not entering or disturbing private residences. However, none of them had ever believed it.

Almost simultaneously, the people and ghosts of the Mei Mansion turned around to look at the mansion's nameplate and plaque. Within this magnificent and imposing mansion, many stories of infighting and backstabbing had taken place in the struggle for money, power, and survival; but just outside the mansion, separated by a wall, lay a brand new world after a snowfall.

Its demise was sudden, and its rise was swift.

Ye Chu glanced at the Mei Mansion, then looked back at the people on the street. After a long while, she suddenly laughed and said, "The murderer inside the mansion has won. Fortunately, outside the mansion, the people have won."

The camera pans, the image fades, and a few lines of subtitles appear.

"After Mr. Mei was dissected, reporter Ye Chu found the miniature confidential documents."

"After some processing, she obtained the contents of the document and published it in the 'Happiness Daily,' exposing the evil deeds of the old government to the world. This not only aroused the public sentiment in the old city, but also inspired the resistance of the people in the other unliberated cities."

"For this, she survived countless assassination attempts. Years later, when someone asked her why she did it—"

The scene changes.

A table lamp, a small round table, and a sofa.

The lights were dim.

A beam of light shone in the center of the image, and the old man sat up straight, murmuring:

"Whether you're a journalist or a detective, you must bring the truth to light..."
