Chapter 491 Staying Overnight (Part 1)

Chapter 491 Staying Overnight (Part 1)

Yun Zhao returned to the living room sofa and lay down. With nothing to do, he turned on his communicator and chatted with Bai Yu.

Bai Yu hadn't heard any news from the base for many days.

I stopped dwelling on the 'dark guide' and started sharing with her what I had seen and heard along the way.

"This is the first time I've seen the legendary sentry post. The conditions aren't as bad as I imagined. There's electricity and water, and the rooms are quite clean."

Bai Yu: "In some places, the sentries are not in good condition. They can only return to the base once every two months. They rely on willpower to get through the rest of the time."

“I provided psychological counseling to the sentries there, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Yun Zhao: "That's great, they'll definitely be very grateful to you."

Bai Yu felt quite accomplished: "You guessed right. When we left, a sentry went to hunt a mutated rabbit as a thank you gift."

"Specifically! Pointed! Out! To! Me!"

Even on the screen next to her, Yun Zhao could feel her happiness.

Bai Yu: "Actually, I have seen many of the sentries in the evacuation room. When they change their environment, their mentality is completely different. They are not as reserved as they were in the evacuation room."

Yun Zhao was about to reply.

—"Chirp—Chirp—"

Screams echoed from the playroom, accompanied by the rushing sound of water from the kitchen.

Yun Zhao suddenly regretted buying that little yellow duck.

It's noisy.

Yun Zhao tried to block out the noise and lay on the sofa, replying, "Did you see the mutant? Were you scared?"

"It makes me angry just thinking about it. Uncle Han was trying to scare me on purpose. Every time the monster got close, he would wait until I could see it clearly before letting the sentry take action."

Bai Yu: "It must have been my dad's idea to scare me back to the base, but I'm not going to let them have their way!"

Yun Zhao: "You weren't scared at all?"

Bai Yu frankly said, "I was really scared at first, but after seeing so many, I became immune."

She probably knew deep down that the monster couldn't hurt her.

She would definitely be scared if she encountered it alone.

“You know, seeing the turbulent spiritual realm of the sentinels outside, the barren wasteland, I felt like a fire was burning inside me.”

Bai Yu: "I want to use my abilities to choose my own way to contribute to this world."

"Yun Zhao, I want to choose the path I want to take."

—"Chirp—Chirp—"

*

After this trip, Bai Yu seems to have grown a lot after seeing the outside world.

Yun Zhao was happy for her and fully supported her decision.

The two talked about what they had seen and heard on the road, and then about Dawn Base. Yun Zhao had never been there, but the sentries in the town were very familiar with Dawn Base.

She had heard a lot about that base before.

Time flew by as we chatted.

"Get ready to eat," Xie Tu's voice came from the kitchen.

Yun Zhao, still wanting more, told Bai Yu, "Let's chat another day," and got up to run into the kitchen to help get the bowls and chopsticks.

As soon as she stepped into the kitchen, she was overwhelmed by the aroma that wafted towards her.

Xie Tu had his back to her, and his shoulders appeared exceptionally broad in the rising steam.

His muscular forearms were exposed as he tasted the soup with a spoon, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed.

The strawberry bowl and lemon bowl I bought have already been washed.

Placed next to the rice cooker, the water droplets made the colors even more vibrant.

Such a beautiful bowl, I can eat two more bowls of rice with it.

Yun Zhao held the bowl and opened the rice cooker to serve rice.

"Be careful, it's hot."

Xie Tu glanced at it, then came over and unplugged the power. His fingertips inadvertently brushed against the back of her hand, feeling its warmth.

Yun Zhao subconsciously curled her fingers, but saw that Xie Tu's expression was normal, and he had already turned around to serve the dishes.

She suspected he did it on purpose.

Yun Zhao carried his rice bowl to the dining table.

Xie Tu followed behind, carrying dishes, his footsteps neither hurried nor slow.

Two dishes were already laid out on the table, and the warm light cast the shadows of the two people close together on the wall.

The plate also comes with matching strawberries and lemons.

Considering it was too late, we ordered a simple meal with two meat dishes and one vegetable dish, including the sweet and sour pork ribs he mentioned.

The ribs are coated in a rich, dark sauce, with a glossy, reddish-brown color and a layer of white sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The unique sour and sweet flavors of aged vinegar intertwine and linger.

It instantly awakens one's taste buds, causing saliva to be secreted uncontrollably.

Yun Zhao thought for a moment, and after Xie Tu sat down, she picked up a piece and put it in his bowl, saying, "You worked hard cooking this."

Xie Tu stared at the tempting sweet and sour pork ribs in the bowl for several seconds before slowly raising his head to look at Yun Zhao.

His eyes sparkled with tiny lights, as if they held a sky full of stars.

Yun Zhao's attention was focused on the sweet and sour pork ribs. He had just lowered his head to bite into a rib and didn't see the expression on his face.

Neither of them spoke during the meal.

I only ate bread for lunch.

In the last few days of their journey, Jiang Mu and the others ran out of the meat they had brought, and she went three more days without eating meat.

The aroma of meat is infused with sweet and sour flavors, becoming more fragrant with each chew. Even the bones are simmered until tender, making it irresistible to lick your fingers and savor the taste. It's so delicious you can't stop eating it.

Xie Tu smiled slightly. He ate quietly, his movements were efficient but not hasty, and he would occasionally glance at her with a calm gaze.

In the end, most of the sweet and sour pork ribs ended up in her stomach.

*

A gentle night breeze rustled the leaves of the trees in the mountains, creating a soft, whispering sound.

The balcony window was open, and the wind rushed in, whipping the curtains into the air.

It was quiet outside.

Most people had already turned off their lights and gone to bed, with only a few windows still lit.

After eating and drinking my fill, I felt sleepy.

Looking at the mess on the table and in the kitchen, Yun Zhao realized it was too late and didn't want to delay his return to rest.

"Put the bowl here, I'll wash it."

Xie Tu glanced down at the time. "You didn't clean it properly. I'll do it later."

He spoke, but his body remained seated.

Yun Zhao glanced at him several times, then finally realized what he meant, "You don't want to leave?"

Her expression was serious, and her bun was loose and sloppy, making her look cute, but her words could be incredibly blunt.

Xie Tu was already used to her occasional surprising remarks, and replied, "I'm afraid you won't be comfortable at night."

He felt neither guilty nor embarrassed; he simply turned his head away from her.

Yun Zhao: "?"

What's there to be uncomfortable about being at home?

“It’s not safe to park the car downstairs, so I’ll have someone drive it to the operations department and park it overnight.”

Xie Tu stood up, picked up an empty shopping bag, and swept all the trash on the table into the bag.

He remained calm and said, "I don't have a car, so it's inconvenient to go back."

Yun Zhao: "..." So it was premeditated all along.

After Xie Tu finished clearing the table, he neatly put the bowls and chopsticks into the kitchen, turned on the tap, and the sound of running water came from the kitchen.

Yun Zhao followed and stood at the kitchen door.

The man was washing dishes with his back to her, the warm yellow light outlining his broad silhouette.

Yun Zhao stared at it for a while, then said quietly, "Your excuse isn't very good." It was too obvious.

Xie Tu paused in his work, but didn't turn around. He just smiled slightly and said, "As long as it works."

His voice was deep, with a hint of barely perceptible laughter.

Water droplets splashed on the back of his hand, sliding down between his distinct knuckles, shimmering in the light.

Yun Zhao opened his mouth, as if to say something, but then swallowed it back.

She walked over and poked his back. "Where's the rag? I'll go wipe the table."

This can be considered as agreeing to let him stay overnight.

You can't just kick people out.
