Chapter 8 Riots in the Contaminated Zone
The rain has stopped.
The swirling gray mist gradually dissipated.
Immediately afterwards, terrifying howls came from all directions.
Right in front of He Xiang.
A white halo appeared out of nowhere.
The halo gradually spread out, forming a vertical rectangular door.
A hoarse roar came from afar, deafening and echoing through the streets.
The mutants suddenly rioted, abandoning their rigid posture and rushing towards this place in a frenzy.
Upon hearing the commotion, the sentries' expressions changed drastically.
"The door's open! Get out of there quickly!"
Seeing that the two did not move, the sentry captain quickly said, "The door has a time limit for opening. It will open immediately once the key is touched, and all the monsters will be attracted at that time."
The words fell.
A group of mutants appeared at the street corner.
The mutant, dripping with black slime, became extremely agitated, extending its long mandibles and charging towards them with a howl.
He Xiang looked at Yun Zhao with a pale face, his lips trembling as he murmured, "Sister Yun Zhao..."
They can't go out; everyone is still inside.
"It's none of your business."
Yun Zhao never expected things to turn out this way.
To prevent people from accidentally entering contaminated areas and becoming trapped and dying inside, all major bases have implemented the use of keys.
But no one told them that once they got the key, the door would open immediately, causing unrest in the contaminated area.
Yun Zhao quickly unzipped his backpack and stuffed the umbrella inside.
A barrage of gunfire rang out in my ears.
She looked up and saw that the group of sentries had already engaged the mutants in combat.
All seven were A-level sentinels, very strong, and their teamwork was excellent. In the blink of an eye, many puddles of black liquid appeared on the ground.
The sentries blocked one end, preventing the mutants from getting closer.
Yun Zhao tidied his backpack and pulled He Xiang back.
Behind them, a group of mutants appeared on the street as well.
Their escape route was blocked.
Judging from the noise, monsters are still surging in.
On the right side of the shop's shutter door, two mutants were crawling towards the crowd, defying gravity.
That's a higher-level mutation.
Without further hesitation, He Xiang stood in front of Yun Zhao and began firing at the mutant.
The sentries were fighting fiercely when suddenly gunfire rang out from behind them.
The scimitar-wielding sentry glanced back briefly.
Dozens of mutants were rapidly approaching from behind. Two advanced mutants were so fast that they were only visible as afterimages. Bullets grazed past them without slowing them down in the slightest.
The guide was in a very dangerous situation.
"Come here quickly!" the scimitar sentry called anxiously.
There's no time left.
He and another sentry ran over quickly, grabbed Yun Zhao's backpack straps, and pulled her backward.
Guides are extremely rare.
Protecting the guides has become an instinct for the sentries.
A flash of light appeared before their eyes, black slime splattered everywhere, and the mutant that lunged forward fell down with a wail.
The combat uniforms used at large bases are corrosion-resistant.
The scimitar sentry stood in front of the two, but suddenly paused, sensing that something was off about the mutant he had just killed.
The movements... seem to have suddenly slowed down?
Yun Zhao stumbled and almost fell due to the sudden force from behind.
The scimitar-wielding sentry quickly steadied her.
The boy curled his lip. "The guide is really weak."
He casually lifted it up with one hand.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say she was frail and delicate.
Yun Zhao didn't refute him, but looked up and asked, "Were you trying to steal the keys just now?"
I didn't expect her to ask so directly.
The scimitar-wielding sentinel drew its blade again, severing the mutant's head, and uttered a strange sound, "Hmm..."
Yun Zhao: "Why?"
He was silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, "The gatekeeper's aura is only strong in the early stages. Once the gate to the outside world is opened and the domain comes into contact with the outside world, the auras will merge, and it will become less and less noticeable. At that time, the difficulty of searching will increase many times over."
He said a lot, but Yun Zhao didn't understand a word he said.
Then she asked, "What is a gatekeeper?"
"You don't even know who the gatekeeper is?"
The scimitar-wielding sentinel found it unbelievable. "Then what are you doing in the contaminated zone?"
He stared at her with wide eyes, thinking she was practically courting death.
Before Yun Zhao could answer.
Another sentry kindly explained, "The gatekeeper is the spiritual pillar of the entire domain. As long as the gatekeeper is killed, the contaminated zone will collapse and disintegrate."
Taking advantage of the reduced pressure, He Xiang quickly changed his ammunition.
He was furious when he heard this, "Then just say it! Anyone would grab the keys if someone suddenly rushed over and tried to snatch them!"
The two sentries exchanged a glance, their eyes revealing a hint of helplessness.
The current situation is not optimistic.
The scimitar-wielding sentry switched to a gun and began firing at the mutated creatures that kept charging at him.
The reward for this mission is as high as 2,000 points.
The team that kills the gatekeeper will receive an additional 5,000 points.
Points are not a small amount.
The sentries need to support their families; they risk their lives so that their families can have a better life.
Everyone had their own selfish motives; they all wanted to be the first to find the gatekeeper.
When the sentries spotted people ahead and found they had obtained the key beforehand, they assumed the two were middlemen roaming the contaminated area and wanted to use the key to blackmail them for points.
Points are valid in all four bases; an average person can survive on two to three hundred points a month.
The reward points for their missions need to be shared among seven people. If a gatekeeper cannot be found, the points allocated to each person will be minimal.
The sentries were unwilling to give up their points.
The middlemen understood the importance of the gatekeepers and dared not offend Dawn Base or disrupt their mission.
That's why they wanted to get their hands on the key first.
Who would have thought?
This low-ranking sentry was a complete idiot; he knew nothing and actually grabbed the key.
The door is open now; it's too late to say anything.
The howling was deafening, echoing throughout the entire street.
As more and more mutants surged in, both ends of the street were completely blocked.
Ammunition was running out rapidly, and the group fought and retreated.
The sentry captain immediately ordered, "We can't hold out any longer. We'll retreat through the door and come back in once the unrest has subsided."
The riot lasted only one hour.
After the door disappears, things will gradually return to calm.
The search has become more difficult, and they don't believe the other four teams can find the gatekeeper immediately.
"receive!"
Upon receiving the order, the entire team retreated towards the glowing door while simultaneously eliminating the mutants.
The two sentries who came to provide support tried to pull the two men back inside the gate.
Yun Zhao and He Xiang, however, tacitly avoided their hands.
"Thank you for your kindness, but we cannot go out."
He Xiang glanced at Yun Zhao, and seeing that she didn't react, he said truthfully, "The people in the town are all inside. If Sister Yun Zhao goes out, the barrier will break, and they won't be able to protect themselves."
"The whole town?"
The scimitar-wielding sentry asked in surprise, "Why are so many people coming into the contaminated area?"
He Xiang explained, "We didn't come in on our own; the contaminated area suddenly formed just as we reached this point..."
The sentries: "..." That's really unlucky.
The sound of conversation lessened the sense of urgency.
A sentry killed the mutant that lunged at him and took a moment to look up ahead.
Countless monsters emanating black smoke surged toward this place; as far as the eye could see, they were all black monsters dripping with slime.
"But we can't get through..."
Before he could finish speaking, the guide suddenly moved, pulling the man straight toward the mutant.
The sentries were horrified: "Don't go there and get yourself killed!"
Seeing this, they were about to run over and pull the two back.
The next second.
The little bluebird flapped its wings, and countless fluorescent threads, shimmering with green starlight, appeared out of thin air, like fireflies dancing in the air in summer, quickly disappearing into the mutant's body.
The mutants, who had been baring their teeth and about to pounce, suddenly became dazed and stood frozen in place.
Yun Zhao led He Xiang through the middle.
Her voice came through, "Thank you for the information. I wish you success in finding the gatekeeper."
The sentry captain gasped.
What are those fluorescent lights flying everywhere?
The Guide's powerful mental energy has always been used only on Sentinels; there has never been any record of the Guide being able to influence Aberrants.
This guide... is amazing!
