Gu Li silently met his gaze for a moment, the sharpness rising within her gradually diminishing, and she squatted down under the child's tense gaze.
"Why did you choose me?"
Upon hearing this, the little boy, holding the ball, suddenly grinned and revealed an exaggerated smile. From Gu Li's angle, one could even see the struggle surging deep in his throat.
And the traces of blood between his teeth.
He chuckled twice: "The adults said that once you're chosen, you'll be my toy. You can play with me, eat with me, and attend parties with me!"
As he finished speaking, a fervent look ignited in his eyes, as if he were eagerly anticipating the so-called party.
Half an hour later, Gu Li expressionlessly pulled the long sword from the trembling little boy's shoulder once again. His mouth was wide open, and his cheeks were almost bulging out of his throat.
But once again, Gu Li casually stabbed him back with his sword.
The creature cried out in sorrow along with the little boy.
Gu Li watched silently as the bloodstains on the longsword gradually disappeared, and the wounds on the little boy on the ground, whose face was contorted in pain, appeared as if they had never existed.
But when those dark, hollow eyes looked at Gu Li, they held a hint of fear and resentment.
"You've been chosen! You can't leave before attending the party!"
The little boy, Reed, chuckled nervously again, his eyes swirling with dark grime: "The party... of course, is a grand celebration prepared for us by Mother Goddess."
He smiled and glanced at Gu Li, then ran off in another direction with the ball in his arms. Gu Li stood still, but when the distance between them exceeded five meters, her body involuntarily began to move as well.
It's more accurate to say it was dragged rather than moved by itself.
Gu Li tried to plunge his longsword deep into the ground, then stopped. Soon after, the blade, buried in the ground, let out a mournful cry of unbearable strain.
She frowned, drew her longsword, clicked her tongue, and slowly walked in the direction Reed had disappeared.
The crowds walking on both sides of the road remained indifferent to their interaction, as if Gu Li hadn't pierced Reid's shoulder with a longsword, but was instead playing with him by holding a stick.
They were like extras hired for a low-budget movie, diligently completing their performance tasks, only when Gu Li passed by them.
Pairs of eyes followed her movements silently, their gazes filled with blatant covetousness and greed.
Gu Li's movements were restricted by a little brat the moment she entered the east of the city, but that didn't matter. She quickly figured out a way to coexist peacefully for the time being.
After playing with Reed for a while with a ball that could splatter brains, the smile on Reed's face gradually froze. He moved his feet to avoid the deep crater that she had casually created with the ball.
His expression twisted for a moment, and he said haltingly, "It's almost lunchtime. If I go back late, my father and mother will be very angry."
"Let's go back."
Gu Li bounced the ball in her hand, raising an eyebrow slightly: "But I'm not tired yet, I can play with you a little longer."
Reid's expression froze completely.
Gu Li's lips curled up slightly. Sure enough, the premise for him to restrain her was to abide by the rules here, and Reid had told her the rules from the beginning.
She needed to play with Reed, have meals with him, and attend parties with him.
Within the time allowed by the rules, Gu Li could naturally play games with him indefinitely.
Gu Li threw the small ball in his hand again. It seemed like he didn't use much force, but Reid, whose limbs had already been broken several times, almost rolled and crawled to avoid the ball.
His gaze toward Gu Li finally carried a hint of fear.
"Aren't you afraid of being torn to pieces by my mother?!"
Gu Li slowly walked over and picked up the small ball beside him: "Before that, maybe I can tear you to pieces first?"
Amid Reed's wailing, Gu Li, carrying him by the hand, began to wander around the east side of the city, hoping to find other anomalies there.
But besides the people in the east of the city who looked rather strange at first glance, another anomaly was also glaringly obvious to her.
Gu Li stood in the square, looking up at the huge statue above her head, her expression somewhat confused.
"This square wasn't here before, was it?"
Reed, who was being held in her hand, chuckled: "This is where we attend the party, where the beloved Mother Goddess will choose her most favored people and bestow power upon them."
“Nicholas sounds like a generous and kind goddess.”
Gu Li's expression was subtle.
Despite his young age, Reed's expression was unusually mature. He stared fervently at the statue above, and if Gu Li hadn't been holding him back, he would have pounced on it already.
"Of course! The Mother Goddess will guide every one of her people to a second life!"
Gu Li's brow twitched as he thought about their state at night. It seemed that these people actually knew about the changes that occurred at night.
They continued to explore the streets and alleys of the eastern part of the city, and apart from the addition of a square, it was no different from when Gu Li had last visited.
At lunchtime, Gu Li arrived right on time with a disappointed Reid in front of a small villa.
Before she could even knock, the door was opened from the inside. A woman with an exceptionally pale face looked at Rhett with a very gentle and loving expression.
And they turned a blind eye to the appearance of chestnuts.
She stroked Reid's hair and led him inside. Gu Li followed her in and immediately met the gaze of two blank-looking men sitting on a stool under the sofa.
A middle-aged man with exceptionally dark skin emerged from the kitchen and lovingly picked up Reed and placed him on a seat.
