As everyone gathered in the square, a milky white mist instantly enveloped them, making everything around them seem illusory. Only the statue in the very center consistently drew everyone's attention.
Gu Li coughed lightly, tightly gripping Reid who was frantically trying to escape, and asked again, "What did you see?"
Reed sat on the ground, tears streaming down his face, trembling as he said, "They were...they were all bugs!!!"
Gu Li was taken aback.
insect?
Red collapsed to the ground, his face pale. After witnessing the truth, he could no longer muster the courage to approach the Mother Goddess. He could only murmur, "We will all die, die in this fog."
Gu Li looked at the statue, which appeared even more sacred in the milky white mist, and his brows gradually furrowed.
The people closest to the statue were already standing at its feet, their faces flushed with anticipation, reverently reaching out to touch the statue's instep.
The person they were holding was enveloped in a thick fog amidst murmurs. The milky white mist engulfed the person, blocking everyone's view.
A group of people, their faces filled with fascination, stroked the instep of the statue. They were the most devout and fanatical believers, and the people they brought with them disappeared one by one into the thick fog.
Gu Li sniffed the air: "There's a smell of blood."
He Shiyi shook off the people he brought out of the fog's reach and slowly replied, "Of course, that insect's favorite thing is to taste blood."
Gu Li looked at Reid, who was now slumped over, and sighed: "Is it safe to just throw him out?"
The pollution concentration in the square is rapidly increasing. Lower species will slowly gather and be born outside the fog. If they are unlucky enough to give birth to missionary-level alien species, I'm afraid that by the time they get out, there won't be a single person left outside.
He Shiyi mentioned that he had thrown Reid out in the same way.
"It seems you haven't figured out one thing: they've long ceased to be human. Even if they weren't devoured by the outside world, they're nothing more than..."
He looked up at the statue, which was as bright as a light bulb, with a hint of disgust: "Nicholas's food reserves."
Before the first group of residents had even moved away from the foot of the statue, others swarmed in, stepping on the feet, backs, and even heads of those who had come before, eager to touch the statue's calves.
The people they brought with them were also enveloped in fog at that moment.
Gu Li: "Was that voice telling me to come and touch this statue?"
He glanced at her upon hearing this, and casually patted the top of her head: "Good girl, don't listen to any sudden voices in your head."
He seemed to have been intently observing the statue ever since he entered the square, his gaze almost never leaving it. Gu Li didn't disturb him, but simply observed the statue silently, his eyes constantly searching the square for those who had disappeared after being shrouded in mist.
She suddenly heard He Shiyi's voice.
Is anyone still watching you?
Gu Li looked around and quickly replied, "There are about a few dozen more people."
They all stood on the periphery of the square, their heads facing the statue from various angles, but their eyes were separated from their body movements, staring at Gu Li from an eerie angle.
It was as if something was watching Gu Li through their eyes.
He Shiyi let out a snort from his chest and reached out to grab the hair ribbon from Gu Li's hand: "It seems that thing likes you quite a bit, which is not a good thing."
Under Gu Li's gaze, he slowly wrapped the black hairband around his left palm, one circle at a time.
"Can I borrow it for a moment?"
Gu Li knew that this was He Shiyi's clone. Within Bellamy's territory, He Shiyi must have been constrained just like her.
Are you going to kill her?
Looking from Gu Li's direction, He Shiyi's small mole on the corner of his lip twitched, and then his voice came.
"He is not yet complete. Even if the statue is completely destroyed, it will only slow down the progress."
He Shiyi's voice was indifferent: "I have already seen that Bellamy City does not have the parts. If they want to completely summon Nicholas, they must bring over all those parts."
Gu Li thought of the head found by the Red Bees and suddenly realized, "Their operation has already begun. Does that mean the other parts have already successfully arrived?"
He Shiyi's gaze finally fell on her, his eyes filled with a smile. His left hand, wrapped with a black hairband, was slightly opened and swung back.
Make a sword-holding gesture.
“Good boy,” he praised Gu Li, then gripped the longsword that had suddenly appeared in his left hand. The sword was pitch black, like a black hole that could absorb everything.
A pale, slender hand reached through the hilt and gripped it. The openwork hilt, inlaid with countless obsidian stones, was decorated with exquisite patterns—patterns that once represented the He family, one of the Federation's top noble families.
He Shiyi used a left-handed sword, and the movement of drawing the long sword was slow and elegant, with something being released along with his movements.
A smile appeared on He Shiyi's face.
"I'm going to stop the sacrifice."
Although Gu Li really wanted to follow, she suppressed her impulse. Ever since the moonlight fell on her, her suppressed power had been gradually recovering.
However, the progress is too slow, and going up now might cause trouble for He Shiyi.
She exchanged a glance with Levi and Cecil in the distance: "We'll take care of clearing the area."
They stood at opposite ends of the square, but started moving simultaneously the instant He Shiyi made his move.
He Shiyi raised his hand and drew his sword. The slender blade danced in the air, leaving afterimages. Even though he was still some distance from the statue, countless blade marks had already appeared on the statue's body.
