Chapter 72: The White Marker of the Nest

Gu Li glanced back at them while munching on a pancake. The hard pancake caught her throat unexpectedly, and she suddenly coughed violently, her sky-blue eyes filled with tears that had been choked out.

She pounded her chest repeatedly, and after a long while, she finally swallowed it down and breathed a sigh of relief.

At the same time, the force that almost slapped her to the ground was withdrawn. Gu Li turned around and silently exchanged a glance with the big man beside her, confirming that he did not mean it.

With difficulty, he managed to squeeze out a hoarse "thank you" from his throat.

The burly man, looking annoyed, nodded, waving his arm, which was thicker than Gu Li's thigh. He looked at her with a cautious gaze, as if he were looking at something very fragile.

He was wearing a worn-out vest and leather jacket haphazardly, a stark contrast to Gu Li, who was dressed in an exquisitely made little suit.

Gu Li then realized that this kind-hearted, burly man actually had a face that was completely out of proportion to his physique, and could be described as handsome.

However, the combination of his youthful good looks and his amazing physique creates a striking contrast.

Gu Li glanced at him, then looked away with envy. If she looked at him any longer, she would be unable to resist asking him for advice.

She turned her head away with difficulty and started chatting with the squad leader who was driving in front of her.

"How can I make money here?"

The squad leader glanced at her, but before he could say anything, a burst of laughter came from the carriage behind.

The unkempt homeless man, who was finally dragged into the car, laughed and then said with malice in his eyes, "Little girl, you should first consider whether you can survive for ten minutes after entering the battlefield. Making money here is not something a girl like you should be thinking about."

This is not something they, who were forcibly conscripted, can consider.

The people around him chuckled softly, their eyes fixed on the red figure as if it were a child who didn't know any better, yet filled with blatant malice.

Their resentment at being chosen found an outlet, which they vented unrestrainedly on a weakling.

Pairs of eyes, some bright and some dim, stared ahead, eagerly awaiting Gu Li's reaction. It would be quite amusing if the little girl were scared out of her wits on the bus.

Before Gu Li could react, the burly man who had almost knocked Gu Li unconscious stood up first. Before he could utter a sound, the solid muscles on his body made the others shut their mouths in annoyance.

His eyes kept looking ahead.

Gu Li belatedly realized that the men were talking to her. She reached out and wrapped her fur coat tighter around herself, then smiled at the squad leader and said, "I'm just curious. Tell me about it first."

The squad leader glanced expressionlessly at the group of people cheering in the rearview mirror, then focused intently on the increasingly desolate scenery ahead, and actually began to explain things to her.

“You’re not doing the work of charging into battle. Most of the time, you’re providing support from the rear or cleaning up the battlefield.”

Gu Li keenly noticed that the atmosphere inside the spaceship became tense for a moment when he mentioned cleaning up the battlefield, and the squad leader seemed oblivious to the atmosphere behind him.

After the spaceship had been traveling for more than half an hour, the scenery in front of it finally began to change from a desolate landscape to a series of silver cubes, which were scattered in an orderly fashion along the boundary with the Death Plain.

As the spaceship approached, the nearest silver cube lowered a door from the wide wall, allowing the spaceship to land smoothly.

After the squad leader pressed the confirmation button to arrive, he stood up with his helmet in his hand. When his no-longer-young eyes looked at Gu Li, there was a hint of gentleness in them.

“A young girl like you can help out from the rear. Making money is secondary. We will do our best to ensure your safety.”

After saying that, he put on his helmet, opened the spaceship door, and jumped out, leaving Gu Li standing there in a daze.

Staying in... the rear?!

She reached out her hand towards the squad leader's rapidly disappearing figure, when suddenly a hand touched her from behind, and the burly man sitting next to her nodded at her.

This signaled to them that it was time for them to disembark as well.

With a somber expression, Gu Li and his group disembarked from the boat and were guided forward by a person wearing the same black protective suit, but with a white badge on his chest.

She glanced at it and remembered that the squad leader and Xu Feihe from the enforcement team who had just been on duty all had blue badges.

Soon everyone gathered in a spacious hall, which could accommodate a thousand people, and was bare except for the main entrance.

Following behind the burly man Irwin, who claimed to be 18 years old, Gu Li immediately attracted a lot of attention upon entering the hall.

There's no other reason than that among a group of burly men, a small red figure was indeed very eye-catching.

She walked behind Irwin, carrying her suitcase, seemingly oblivious to being the center of attention. She subtly sniffed the air as she surveyed the area, finally fixing her gaze on the white signs that had led them in.

Just as Irwin was about to go up and stand behind the white sign, she silently reached out and tugged at the corner of his clothes.

Irwin's short hair was casually styled back, and between his sharp eyebrows were a pair of green eyes. His gaze toward Gu Li carried a hint of tolerance.

He reached out and touched Gu Li's head, but Gu Li avoided it. He didn't mind and deliberately bent down to whisper, "Tell me if you're nervous, and we'll just stand at the back and not move forward."

Gu Li nudged him with her hand, her eyes fixed in a certain direction, and said without turning her head, "You don't have to bend down so deliberately to take care of me."

She emphasized the last three words.

“I can hear you.”

Irwin couldn't help but glance at Gu Li, who was standing upright on his chest, before immediately looking away: "Alright, if you want."

Gu Li carefully tried to discern the hushed conversations behind the white sign ahead, but unfortunately, there was too much noise in the space, and he could only vaguely hear a few words spoken in a slow tone.
