Chapter 76 Gratitude

As everyone knows, "Summon Skeleton" is the most representative spell in necromancy, bar none.

"Resurrection of the Dead" is essentially a large-scale "summoning of skeletons".

The Book of the Dead records this spell as follows:

Type: Area-of-effect, projectile-oriented, summoning spell;

Range: Medium;

describe:

The necromancer unleashes a surge of necromantic power, summoning the dead within a certain radius and forging temporary contracts with them, commanding them to fight for him. While summoned, the dead will attack nearby targets deemed hostile by the necromancer. The maximum number of dead simultaneously bound by this spell is affected by the necromancer's mental strength level.

Yun Wei once tried using this spell to mine monster cores in the forests of the south, but the results were not ideal.

But at this moment, unlike the southern forests where the distribution of underground monster remains was unknown, the Bone Prison was surrounded by layers upon layers of zombies that were attacking it.

If we calculate the area of a ring according to what we learned in junior high school mathematics, a ring with an outer radius of 10 meters and an inner radius of 3 meters has an area of approximately 285 square meters.

Even conservatively estimating, with five zombies per square meter, there are currently over a thousand zombies outside the bone cell.

Yun Wei cast the spell with himself at the center.

In an instant, countless white rays of light scattered and splashed out from his body, each ray carrying a small necromantic mark. He was like a cluster of silver-white flames, illuminating the dark night sky.

After being hit by the white light, the previously restless zombies fell silent, as if a thousand horses had gone silent, plunging the entire northern part of the city into an eerie stillness.

The next moment, these zombies branded with the 'noose' mark turned against them and rushed towards the remaining zombies surging in from the north...

What followed was a one-sided massacre.

The zombies not controlled by Yun Wei regarded these dead who turned around as their own kind, but when they tried to cross the dead's defenses, they died on the spot, their heads separated from their bodies.

Yun Wei stood in the cage made of withered bones, coldly watching everything.

In truth, he was not feeling well at that moment. Controlling nearly two thousand dead was not as easy as commanding two thousand soldiers. The instant the spell was completed, an overwhelming surge of emotions flooded his mind.

These emotions still retain the instincts of zombies: ferocity, bloodlust, mania, hatred...

In short, it was extremely painful.

It turns out that after these people were transformed into zombies, their souls did not find peace. Instead, they were imprisoned in their gradually decaying bodies, constantly enduring such excruciating torment.

It is this endless pain from the soul that gives those already dead bodies astonishing explosive power.

All of this suffering was relayed back to Yun Wei through the temporary contract.

In that instant, he felt as if a sledgehammer had struck his head, his vision blurred, and he nearly passed out on the spot. The ringing in his ears from the impact made him unable to hear anything, but then another wave of pain struck.

Fortunately, his mental strength was strong enough to support him in enduring wave after wave of painful impacts.

Yun Wei clenched his fists, his face deathly pale, his teeth chattering. His palms were covered in semi-congealed blood, slippery and disgusting.

He relied on the pain in his palm to stay conscious and directed his undead subordinates to clear out the remaining zombies. After all, the zombies running in front were inherently stronger and tireless, making them adept at dealing with their own kind, as if cutting melons and vegetables.

The scene was truly terrifying, resembling a purgatory from mythology.

The cracking sounds of breaking cervical vertebrae echoed incessantly, and putrid black blood soaked the soil in front of them. Countless headless bodies lay slumped on the ground, piling up like haystacks in the field, forming small hills...

The villagers outside the city were utterly terrified. They stared in horror at the scene before them, unable to even utter a cry.

Finally, after about half an hour, all the wild zombies were dealt with.

Yun Wei breathed a sigh of relief and once again controlled the undead he had contracted, engaging them in a fierce battle. Fortunately, the zombies did not feel pain, otherwise he would not know what to do.

But to his surprise, every one of the dead who fell because their bodies were completely destroyed expressed their gratitude to him at the last moment before the contract ended.

They were merely the lowest-ranking undead creatures, conveying only faint emotions, yet through a concerto-like chorus, Yun Wei understood the meaning they were trying to express.

These innocent and pitiful souls were finally freed.

Yun Wei did not know where they were going. According to the "Tales of the Dead," they would go to the "Planet of the Dead" and find peace there.

With the last silver-armored knight zombie under his control snapping its own neck in front of him and collapsing limply, the zombie crisis outside the North Gate was finally resolved.

Yun Wei dispelled the necromantic power surrounding him, and the Bone Prison turned into dry dust, which fell around him in a pale circle. Yun Wei stood silently in place.

The sight of mountains of corpses and seas of blood before him made him feel nauseous, something he hadn't done in a long time. He was already drenched in cold sweat, looking as if he had been pulled out of the water.

The stench of a corpse is unlike any other odor; it's a disgust rooted in human instinct, a reminder to stay away from potential danger. Therefore, even though he was already accustomed to this smell, he still couldn't control the churning in his stomach.

When he turned around helplessly, he was not surprised to see a variety of complex emotions on the faces of the crowd outside the city.

Fear, panic, disgust...

And intense hatred.

Although the fear of necromancers was overwhelmingly dominant, it was like a pile of dry fuel, waiting to be ignited by the gradually spreading and accumulating hatred.

Someone muttered something under their breath:

"It was him! It was this necromancer who did it! He created these monsters! He killed my whole family!"

Like a lit match falling into a boiling oil pan, in an instant, the already infamous necromancer was overwhelmed by a torrent of angry curses.

Perhaps it was the fear of the necromancer that was ingrained in their bones, or perhaps it was the magnificent sea of corpses behind him that intimidated them, but the horde of people remained at the level of verbal attacks, and no one dared to stand up and lay a hand on this seemingly frail mage.

Yun Wei simply stood there, watching them expressionlessly.

Perhaps he was exhausted, perhaps he was used to it, or perhaps he simply regarded these villagers as ants, but Yun Wei was calm at the moment, only thinking about how he could get back to the city and find Isaac.

As expected, they probably can't stay in Moonflower City any longer.

But a frail voice suddenly rang out, interrupting his thoughts.

But the cardinal, mounted on horseback, arrived late. With a compassionate expression, he surveyed the carnage outside the city, where corpses littered the ground, and sternly demanded of him, "You lawless necromancer, how dare you disregard human life in the heart of the royal city! Surrender at once!"

This is Bishop Nicholas, whom I met not long ago.

In Yun Wei's judgment, the other party had already defected to the Abyss.
