Yun Wei blinked and couldn't help but ask, "What do you want to tell me?"
They actually had a lot to say. In about a week, they would be setting sail on a cloud boat, and there was a lot of preparation work to be done.
It was quite obvious that this wasn't what Isaac wanted to tell him.
Isaac casually placed the parchment scroll on the table, but his gaze never left Yun Wei.
He asked Yun Wei, "Have you... forgotten what day it is today?"
Yun Wei subconsciously hummed in response.
Today is December 23rd. Is it some kind of special day?
ah……
He suddenly remembered that it seemed to be his birthday.
Yun Wei was quite embarrassed. He had habitually forgotten about this matter, as he usually counted years by the year rather than by a specific day.
Because he almost never celebrates his own birthday.
His parents thought that celebrating birthdays was a rather pretentious thing, and such thinking was quite common in a loveless family.
Everyone is just trying to play their social roles well. Husbands need a wife and a child to demonstrate their "ability," and wives need a husband and a child to enhance their "happiness."
That's all.
We all live for the opinions of others, and in private we just want to avoid trouble. After all, just living under the same roof and seeing each other all the time is already annoying enough.
Yun Wei only gradually understood all of this long after he had come of age.
But as a child, he didn't understand these things and naively longed for the sense of ritual that only existed in fairy tales.
He recalled asking his parents the same question when he was very young.
He remembered that his father lit a cigarette in the living room and sneered through the acrid smoke, "What kind of birthday is this? What a ridiculous thing."
He remembered his mother telling him, "Your birthday is the day your mother suffered. Even if you're going to celebrate it, it should be for your father."
He never mentioned it again after that.
This is just an ordinary day of the year.
The only reason he could remember it was because he happened to need to write down the ID number.
Yun Wei remembered these past events, not out of complaint, but because he had just read a quote:
"Lucky people spend their lives being healed by their childhood; unlucky people spend their lives healing from their childhood."
Yun Wei didn't know whether he was lucky or unlucky.
But when he saw his boyfriend gazing intently at him, he felt happy.
He quickly recovered from his momentary daze and said with a smile, "What, you even prepared a gift for me?"
For some reason, his low, hoarse voice trembled slightly, like a distorted waveform, on the verge of choking up.
Isaac walked up to him and stopped, saying with great seriousness, "Of course. I started preparing as soon as you told me last month."
Yun Wei was somewhat surprised; he had only mentioned it casually at the time.
He nervously pinched the seam of his trousers, then asked expectantly, "What is it?"
Isaac didn't keep them in suspense; he reached out and, as if by magic, produced a small velvet box.
The box is exquisitely crafted, with mithril clearly added to the metal parts, giving it a faint silver-blue hue.
The intricate carving and filigree techniques clearly indicate that they are a legacy of the Second Dynasty, but the taut yet fluffy velvet satin adds a touch of softness to the imposing nobility.
Yun Wei looked at the box lying quietly in the other person's palm and felt a little embarrassed.
"If it's very valuable jewelry, I can't accept it," he said after examining it for a moment.
He also doesn't have the habit of wearing jewelry.
The only adornment she wore was a simple pair of wedding rings she and Isaac had bought together in Moonflower City to avoid attracting attention.
Seeing this, Isaac quickly comforted him, "It's not valuable, it's just... a pendant I carved myself."
At this point, the knight, who had been full of confidence, became somewhat embarrassed.
He said, "It might be a bit rough, I don't know if you'll like it, but please accept it."
Just as Yun Wei was about to say something, Isaac continued, "I accepted the gifts you gave me before, so you should accept mine too. There's a saying in the Bili language, 'Reciprocity is the best policy.'"
This attitude gave him absolutely no chance to refuse.
Yun Wei chuckled and said, "Alright, since you can use idioms, I'll accept it with a sense of shame. But you should let me see what it is first."
He didn't believe the other party's description of it as "rough," after all, the box itself looked so luxurious.
Isaac said no more and gently opened the box.
Yun Wei originally thought he would be quite calm. He thought, "A pendant is just an ornament to wear around the neck."
But when he saw the little statue lying quietly on the wine-red sponge, he was suddenly stunned.
Clearly, Isaac's description of roughness was just a humble excuse.
The dark, cloud-like statue looked incredibly lifelike; it was a miniature version of Isaac, standing proudly with his hands over his sword.
Even after just one glance, Yun Wei felt a surge of affection for him.
If he only resembled Isaac 90%, perhaps he would be terrified by the uncanny valley effect.
But when the little pendant looked exactly like a replica of Isaac's, he felt that it wasn't a big deal to wear a replica of his beloved that she had carved herself.
Just like Isaac will always be with me.
“It looks beautiful, Issa, your cooking is really good,” he praised sincerely.
Isaac was looking at Yun Wei nervously, but upon hearing this, he breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Then shall I put it on for you?"
"Okay." Yun Wei lowered his head accordingly.
"It might take a while, but I'll try to be as quick as possible," Isaac said to him, his cool breath sending shivers down his spine again.
"Hmm, no rush." Yun Wei used a lot of effort to make his voice sound as normal as possible.
Even so, he could feel the burning heat behind his ear.
The two were very close, and Isaac was carefully braiding a knot behind his neck. In Yun Wei's eyes, the small and delicate "Isaac" was spinning happily, just like his mood at that moment.
It was joyful, relaxing, and imbued with an indescribable sweetness.
"By the way, Issa, what materials is this made of?" Yun Wei asked while waiting.
He caught a whiff of the delicate, exotic fragrance emanating from the small pendant. From his perspective as a necromancer, the dark, cloud-like material did indeed resemble bone.
“It’s a unicorn’s horn,” Isaac explained patiently. “When I was adventuring in the far north, I once rescued a black unicorn—they look a lot like pegasi, but they have horns on their foreheads, though they are usually pure white.”
“When I found it, it was badly injured and stuck in a crevice in the canyon. Heaven knows how it got there, and it must have been stuck for a long time. I noticed that the wounds on its legs were festering,” the kind knight replied truthfully.
Yun Wei smiled and said, "Luckily, he met you."
Fortunately, I met you too. He lowered his eyes and silently added in his heart.
"Oh yeah, that little guy, I couldn't get rid of him no matter what I said. I had to use so much persuasion before he finally understood what I meant, and then he came back and gave me his shed horn." Thinking of this, Isaac shook his head and finally tied the last knot.
His grandmother taught him how to tie this knot, and Yun Wei could easily adjust the length of the rope without taking it off.
He looked with satisfaction at the imposing figure of himself at Yun Wei's collar, the dark blue pendant making the other's fair and pure skin appear even more striking.
Yun Wei reached out and covered his chest, the bulge under his palm giving him great satisfaction.
He thanked the servant in front of him again earnestly: "Thank you, Isa. To be honest, this is the first time I've ever received a birthday present."
But at that moment, he suddenly noticed something unusual.
