When Granny Yang saw her eldest son enter the kitchen, she immediately burst into tears: "My son, I can't go on living like this! Look at your daughter-in-law, she beats and scolds me all the time, how can I live like this?"
She cried and slapped her thigh with her hand, the sound sharp and piercing.
Seeing that her eldest son remained silent, Granny Yang couldn't help but complain again: "My life is so miserable! I'm already so old, and I still have to put up with my grandson and granddaughter-in-law's bad temper. Not only are they unfilial, but they also often give me attitude. I really feel like I want to die."
She spoke while wiping away tears, as if she had truly suffered a great loss.
Grandma Yang's crying grew louder and louder, attracting the attention of the surrounding neighbors.
Xiao Wenjing frowned slightly as he looked at his unreasonable mother. He had told her last night not to covet the money, but she still wouldn't listen.
When Granny Yang saw the neighbors gathering around, she cried out even more vehemently, "Everyone, come and see! My grandson has forgotten his own grandmother after getting married. He's such an ingrate!"
Xiao Wenjing listened to his mother's tearful complaints, feeling both angry and helpless.
"Enough! Mother, stop being unreasonable!"
Granny Yang looked at her eldest son in disbelief. Before she could figure out how to deal with him, Shen Yunsheng stepped forward to explain.
"Father, this is what happened. My husband and I were cooking when Grandma suddenly rushed in and demanded that I give her the money I earned yesterday for safekeeping. When I refused, she sat on the floor and started throwing a tantrum."
As soon as Shen Yunsheng finished speaking, a murmur arose from the crowd.
"That old woman is going too far. Why should she give away the money that the young couple earns?"
"Exactly, what kind of elder acts like that?"
Hearing the accusations from the crowd, Granny Yang's face turned extremely ugly. She pointed at Shen Yunsheng and cursed, "You worthless good-for-nothing, how dare you slander me in front of so many people?"
Seeing this, Xiao Wenjing quickly shielded his daughter-in-law behind him, saying, "Mother, please stop making a scene. Jingchuan and his wife don't earn money easily, so please don't make things difficult for them."
When Granny Yang saw that her eldest son wasn't on her side, she stomped her feet in anger, "Well, you've grown wings now, and you even dare to help that good-for-nothing bully your old mother."
After Yang Pozi finished speaking, she stood up and pounded her son's chest.
Fearing that Granny Yang might hurt her father, Xiao Jingchuan immediately pulled Granny Yang away.
"Grandma, don't force me to sever ties with you. It's one thing that you always favor my second uncle's family, but you also want my husband and me to continue to be their slaves. Do you think that's possible?"
The neighbors who were watching couldn't help but gossip.
"Oh! Old Lady Yang is such a wicked woman. She forced Jingchuan, such a good person, to break off his relationship with her."
"Old woman Yang is simply inhuman. A few days ago, when she saw that Jingchuan was a living dead, she forced Uncle Wenjing to divide the family property. Now that Jingchuan has woken up, she wants him to earn money for her."
"Hmph! There's no such thing as a free lunch. If I were Jingchuan and his wife, I wouldn't give her the money either."
"If you ask me, we should just cut off all ties. Anyone who gets involved with an elder like Granny Yang is doomed."
“I also support Jingchuan severing ties with his relatives. That old woman Yang is too wicked and doesn’t deserve Jingchuan’s respect.”
"Alas! Every family has its own troubles. If we really break off the relationship, Granny Yang will definitely force Uncle Wenjing."
"That's true. Uncle Wenjing is a well-known filial son. He can't bear to refuse any request from Granny Yang!"
"What a load of rubbish about filial piety! That's called blind filial piety. He treats Granny Yang like his mother, but Granny Yang doesn't treat him like her son. I even suspect he was adopted."
As Xiao Wenjing listened to the discussions around him, his expression grew increasingly grim.
He turned to look at Granny Yang and said in a deep voice, "Mother, haven't you made enough of a scene? Ever since my father passed away, you've always favored the second son, and I haven't said anything. But now, you actually want to interfere in our family's affairs, and I absolutely cannot agree to that!"
Granny Yang was startled by Xiao Wenjing's words; she had never seen her eldest son so serious before.
Her momentum instantly weakened, but she still stubbornly insisted, "I'm doing this for your own good, to prevent you from wasting money."
“We have our own way of life, and we don’t need your interference,” Xiao Wenjing said. “If you continue to act so recklessly, don’t blame me for disowning you as my mother.”
After hearing this, Granny Yang finally quieted down.
If her eldest son doesn't acknowledge her, she'll have no chance to gain any benefits in the future.
Shen Yunsheng was very satisfied with his father-in-law's performance; at least in this matter, he did not show favoritism towards Granny Yang.
“Grandma, when our family divided the property, everything was clearly explained! It was agreed that although you would be living with your second uncle's family, we would give you five taels of silver every year as support. This was all written down in black and white, and everyone witnessed it!”
"What can five...five taels of silver do?" Granny Yang shamelessly retorted. If she had known earlier that her second grandson would wake up, she would never have separated from the family.
Shen Yunsheng sneered, "Grandma, we should be more kind. My father works hard all year and only earns a few taels of silver. You still think five taels of silver is too little? Aren't you just hitting my father where it hurts?"
Upon hearing this, everyone burst into laughter again.
"That old woman Yang is shameless. Uncle Wenjing has given her all the money he earns, and she's still not satisfied."
"A shameless person is invincible. I have never seen anyone as shameless as her."
"Oh! Poor Uncle Wenjing, if he doesn't come to his senses sooner or later, his main branch will be doomed."
"The poor one is Aunt Luo. She's stuck with such a filial son, and she's aged herself into an old woman."
