Shen Yunsheng looked coldly at the nagging Qiu Shi. Qiu Shi had only been cooking for a few days and was already complaining of being tired. She really thought of herself as an official's wife.
"Jingchuan's family, what are you standing there for? Hurry up and cook!"
Qiu took off her apron and impatiently threw it to Shen Yunsheng.
Shen Yunsheng took the apron and threw it at Qiu Shi on the spot.
"Second Aunt, you have no right to order me around. If it weren't for the old lady complaining about your cooking, I wouldn't bother coming to the kitchen."
Qiu's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. This little darling was really annoying, daring to give her attitude.
“Jingchuan’s family, I am at least your elder. Is this how you talk to your elder?”
"Second Aunt, I also want to treat you as an elder, but you have never acted like one from the beginning."
Shen Yunsheng sneered. This Qiu family usually bullied the original owner of the body without restraint because she was an elder.
The thought of those ten taels of silver made Qiu furious.
“Jingchuan’s family, don’t push your luck. I’m only asking you to cook because I think highly of you. Otherwise, with your current status, you wouldn’t even be qualified to stay in this house.”
A layer of frost appeared in Shen Yunsheng's eyes. The second wife had taken advantage of her and still wanted to ride roughshod over her. Today, she would not only help her cheap husband collect his debts, but also teach Qiu a lesson.
"Second Aunt, you just said I don't deserve to stay in this family. What are your reasons? If you can't give a reasonable explanation, don't blame me for turning my back on you."
“You…you have been married to Jingchuan for three years and don’t even have a child. If it weren’t for the old lady’s kindness, she would have divorced you long ago.”
Shen Yunsheng couldn't help but laugh out loud: "Second Aunt, you're too funny. I've been married to Xiao Jingchuan for less than a month, and the old lady is already forcing him to join the army. How am I supposed to have a child by myself?"
Qiu was speechless after being rebuked by Shen Yunsheng. Seeing that she didn't speak, Shen Yunsheng said again, "Second Aunt! Since you mentioned my husband, I'll chat with you for a bit."
"You... what do you want to say?" Qiu instinctively stepped back, suddenly regretting provoking Shen Yunsheng.
“Before my husband went to join the army, you borrowed five taels of silver from him. Shouldn’t you pay it back?”
Last night, when Shen Yunsheng was helping her husband organize his clothes, she found an IOU in his wardrobe. It was written by Qiu Shi. She originally planned to ask Qiu Shi for the money in a couple of days, but Qiu Shi was too demanding, and she didn't want her to live too comfortably.
"You...you're talking nonsense. When...when did I borrow money from him?"
As soon as Shen Yunsheng mentioned silver, Qiu Shi vehemently denied it.
Three years ago, she did borrow money from Xiao Jingchuan and even wrote an IOU.
"Second Aunt, I have no evidence, so I won't ask you for the money. The fact that you were willing to write an IOU back then shows that you really needed the money urgently. If you don't want the old lady to know about this, you should return the money to me as soon as possible."
Shen Yunsheng understood Qiu Shi. A selfish woman like her would never easily issue an IOU. As long as Qiu Shi returned the money, she wouldn't expose Qiu Shi.
Qiu was extremely depressed. She had secretly borrowed money to help her family. If her mother-in-law found out, she would be in serious trouble.
But she was unwilling to simply pay back the money.
Shen Yunsheng suspected that Qiu borrowed money to help her family. Previously, when she sorted through the original owner's memories, she found that Qiu had also borrowed money from the original owner, but the original owner did not have the money to lend her.
"Second Aunt, you know the old lady's temper. If she finds out that you borrowed money to support your family, she will definitely make Second Uncle divorce you."
Qiu felt a dull pain in her chest. She had finally managed to save up some money, which she now had to use to pay off her debts.
"Second Aunt, I won't force you. Just give it to me before dark."
Shen Yunsheng took out the IOU and played with it casually.
When Qiu saw that she really had an IOU, she gave up the idea of defaulting on the debt.
"Jingchuan's family, please watch the fire for me while I go back to my bedroom to get it for you."
"Then I'll have to trouble you, Second Aunt."
Shen Yunsheng put away the IOU with satisfaction. Her mama's boy father-in-law had only earned five taels of silver in ten months working at the lumber shop. Once she got the silver, she would use it as start-up capital.
Qiu's face was extremely pale. Not long after she left the kitchen, Granny Yang brought several pounds of brown rice into the kitchen.
"Jingchuan's family, cook some rice porridge, don't steam any more buns."
Shen Yunsheng looked helplessly at the rice bag in Granny Yang's hand. The so-called brown rice was actually a kind of rice with a light yellow color and a relatively coarse texture. In times of famine, most people couldn't even afford rice bran.
Granny Yang placed the rice bag on the table in a depressed mood.
“Jingchuan’s family, do you want to get some grain back? This family is out of food.”
Shen Yunsheng sneered. This old lady really treats her like a money bag. She doesn't go to anyone else when the family runs out of food. What's the point of talking to her?
Seeing that Shen Yunsheng didn't speak, Granny Yang started muttering to herself again.
“Jingchuan’s family, they’re out of cooking oil too. Could you buy two jin while you’re at it?”
"Grandma, you should go find someone else. You've confiscated all the money I earned before. How am I supposed to buy food?"
Shen Yunsheng was very agitated. If they didn't separate the family, no matter how much money she earned, it wouldn't be enough to fill the bottomless pit of the second wife's family.
The most urgent thing is to find a way to save some money and leave this awful place as soon as possible.
Granny Yang glanced at Shen Yunsheng and softened her tone: "Jingchuan's family, you will be in charge of chopping firewood from now on. A load of firewood can sell for at least fifteen coins. We can exchange it for coarse rice, which will be enough for our family to eat for two days."
Shen Yunsheng sneered again. This old woman really dared to think that way. She liked to treat the second wife like an ancestor, that was her business, and she had no obligation to raise an ungrateful wretch for her.
"Grandma, please stop worrying about my affairs. Instead of scheming against me, you should let your second uncle's family support themselves."
