Xiao Wenjing was furious. He never expected that his son would bring back an old man from his trip to the city. To make matters worse, the old man had lost his memory.
"Chuan'er! There's another important reason why I asked you to send him back. If his family finds out about this and turns around and accuses you, wouldn't you be in trouble? Our family would then have a bad reputation."
Xiao Jingchuan knew very well that his father's disapproval of taking in the old man was not solely due to the family's poverty.
In reality, the father was someone who hated getting into trouble. Taking in the old man meant taking on the responsibility of caring for him, which was undoubtedly a heavy burden for them.
In addition, the father was worried that the old man might bring some unforeseen problems and troubles.
"Dad, Grandpa has lost his memory. He only remembers the girl named Youyou. He doesn't remember anyone else."
Xiao Wenjing frowned deeply. It wasn't that he was unwilling to help someone in distress; he had seen many homeless elderly people like the old man. Once he regained his memory, they would repay kindness with enmity, and some even took advantage of people's sympathy to swindle money.
"Father, whether you agree or not, I will keep Grandpa. He's too old to handle any more trouble." Xiao Jingchuan didn't want to ask his father's opinion anymore. He knew he would object before he brought his grandfather home.
He told his father, which was also a sign of respect; as for the outcome, it was no longer important.
Xiao Wenjing interrupted his son with displeasure, "You little rascal, so from the very beginning you were determined to take in the old man, and you even pretended to discuss it with me."
“I’m discussing this with you because I respect you. If even you don’t care about Grandpa, wouldn’t Grandpa be very pitiful?”
Xiao Jingchuan changed the subject abruptly, then praised his father as kind-hearted.
Just as Xiao Wenjing was about to speak, Shen Yunsheng walked in from outside the door.
"Husband, you've misunderstood Father. He's against taking Grandpa in mainly because he's worried that Grandpa's family won't be able to find him and will be anxious. A kind and good person like Father will definitely take Grandpa in!"
The daughter-in-law immediately showered Xiao Wenjing with compliments, leaving him completely bewildered. If he objected to taking in the old man, his perfect image would be ruined.
Shen Yunsheng didn't give her father-in-law a chance to refute her. She walked up to him with a smile, took his arm, and said coquettishly, "Father, let's just consider it a good deed. Even if you want Grandpa to stay after he regains his memory, he won't stay!"
Xiao Wenjing sighed helplessly, "Then let's take him in for now. But we have to agree that he'll leave once he regains his memory."
Xiao Jingchuan nodded quickly in agreement, "Don't worry, Father." Shen Yunsheng also smiled and said, "Thank you, Father. I'll go and prepare a room for Grandpa right away."
After saying that, she turned and went to get busy. Xiao Jingchuan followed his wife to help, and Xiao Wenjing watched their backs as they walked away, silently praying that the old man wouldn't cause too much trouble for the family.
Seeing the old man pour himself some tea, Xiao Wenjing sat down next to him to inquire about the situation.
"Sir, how old is your daughter Youyou this year?"
"You're a bad person, I don't want to tell you."
The old man was very wary. He glanced at Xiao Wenjing and then turned his head to the side.
After being rebuffed, Xiao Wenjing did not give up and continued to probe for information: "Do you remember where you live? Or what are the names of your family members?"
The old man frowned, trying hard to remember, but finally shook his head. "I don't remember."
Helpless, Xiao Wenjing had no choice but to temporarily give up asking questions.
At this moment, Shen Yunsheng walked over and handed the old man a plate of peeled loquats. "Grandpa, have some loquats to quench your thirst."
The old man took the fruit plate, gave Shen Yunsheng a grateful look, and then slowly began to eat.
Xiao Wenjing watched this scene with a sense of frustration. He had originally thought he was an important figure in the family, but now it seemed his daughter-in-law cared more about the homeless old man than about him.
He couldn't help but feel a sense of loss and confusion.
Does she think I'm less important than a stranger?
Xiao Wenjing took a deep breath, telling himself to stay calm and rational. After all, his daughter-in-law was acting out of kindness, and he knew that relationships between people were complex and varied, and couldn't be judged solely on appearances.
Shen Yunsheng also washed a plate of loquats for her father-in-law. She ran to the kitchen, gave the loquats to her father-in-law, and then chatted with him about Li Dashan. She told her father-in-law that when she went to the city, she was intercepted by Li Dashan, and the person who instigated it was Granny Yang.
Xiao Wenjing simply didn't believe his mother would do such a thing; he was sure Li Dashan had just made it up.
“Jingchuan’s family, don’t trust Li Dashan. He’s the kind of person who loves to spread rumors. You can’t believe what he says.”
“Dad! Uncle Dashan didn’t lie. The old lady not only made him stop me, but also encouraged him to report me to the authorities.”
Shen Yunsheng frowned slightly. Changing their father-in-law's mind was harder than climbing to heaven.
Xiao Wenjing was shocked. "This is impossible! How could my mother do such a thing?"
Shen Yunsheng sighed softly, "Father, I know you don't want to believe it, but it is indeed the truth. The old lady... has never liked me."
Xiao Wenjing remained silent for a moment. He knew his mother well; she truly hated his daughter-in-law to the core, and it was possible that she was the one who instigated it.
"Perhaps there's some misunderstanding. I'll go ask her about it."
After saying that, Xiao Wenjing stood up and prepared to go find Granny Yang.
"Father! You just need to know about this; there's no need to go to the old lady."
Xiao Wenjing sighed softly. Ever since they separated their family, his relationship with his mother had become even more strained. Sometimes, he felt wronged, but what could he do?
