Chapter 26 Contradictions

When Tian Yu returned home, Tang Yuan and Chen Chong were already back. They had hunted a pheasant and caught a rabbit. Tian Yu remarked that it seemed they had another animal in the house, increasing Tang Yuan's responsibilities. Tang Yuan immediately assured her that he would take good care of all the animals and wouldn't cause her any trouble. Tian Yu told him some details to keep in mind when raising rabbits, mainly that rabbits don't drink water, and the grass they eat should ideally not be wet, as it can easily cause diarrhea and illness. Tang Yuan noted everything down, promising to take good care of them, and put them in a bamboo basket woven by Chen Chong.

Tian Yu cooked them a chicken noodle soup with pheasant, which was undoubtedly another hearty meal. Tian Yu even felt that she had gained a lot of weight; her face was fuller, her hair was smoother, and her skin looked much better. The glutinous rice balls were much rounder and prettier, and the furry one under the table was lying on the ground with a round belly, not wanting to move.

Chen Chong told him about his visit to the village head's house that afternoon, and Chen Chong said he would ask Zhao Jinxin to go with him tomorrow. Knowing that Tian Yu had told them about the divorce, Chen Chong's gaze towards Tian Yu seemed to hold a hint of affection, thinking that perhaps he would be able to marry her soon.

It drizzled last night, but the weather was still sunny this morning. I got up early to do some yoga and studied with Tangyuan. They've both developed good habits of going to bed early and waking up early. Tangyuan has already learned many ancient poems, and is doing well in addition and subtraction. Under Chen Chong's guidance, she's also learned a lot of characters. Chen Chong and Zhao Jinxin are preparing for building a house today. Tian Yu thought he probably wouldn't have time to come here today.

After breakfast, Tangyuan still had to finish the homework Chen Chong had given him. Tianyu brought the bamboo she had cut earlier to build a simple shed in the yard so she could put some furniture in when the house was demolished in a few days, although there wasn't much furniture. Tangyuan finished his homework and came to help Tianyu build the shed, but progress was too slow; they only managed to bury four pillars in a day. Chen Chong didn't appear at dinner time, and Tianyu was a little worried, but she couldn't go looking for him. She could only pace back and forth in front of the door, looking up, but as it got dark, she still didn't see him. Tianyu was anxious, so she left Tangyuan and Maorong at home and went alone through the bamboo forest to go to the village entrance to check. But after a few steps, she tripped over something and fell to the ground. It was pitch black all around, and Tianyu was a little scared. Hearing the cries of nearby animals, she was even more frightened and dared not breathe. She slowly got up, intending to continue walking, but felt like she had twisted her ankle. Before she could stand up properly, she sat down again. Tianyu regretted it; why did she have to come out? Now, she hadn't seen anyone and was injured. Now what to do? She struggled to her feet, supporting herself on the bamboo, and slowly took two steps when someone grabbed her from behind and lifted her up. Startled, Tian Yu screamed and closed her eyes, wildly flailing her arms at the person. Chen Chong called her name, and Tian Yu opened her eyes to see it was him. She breathed a sigh of relief and smiled foolishly at him, asking why he was so late and if he had eaten dinner. Chen Chong carried her home, answering her questions as he went. He told her that he and Zhao Jinxin had spent the whole day in the county town selecting building materials, and they had already finalized the deal; the materials should be delivered in a few days. He told Tian Yu not to wander around after dark, but to stay home and wait, and that he would always be back, no matter how late. He told her not to worry about him and to take care of herself and Tangyuan first.

Tian Yu had already seen the house, and not wanting Tang Yuan to see it, she said, "We're almost home, put me down."

"You've sprained your ankle, you'd better go home quickly."

"No, put me down right now, Tangyuan is still at home."

"It's okay, don't move around, we'll be there soon."

"But!?……"

"It's nothing. Tangyuan asked me a few days ago when I could marry his mother."

"What!? He really asked you that!?"

"Hmm! They told me to hurry up, or other people will try to take it from me."

"He really said that?! I don't believe it, are you lying to me?"

"No, if you don't believe me, go ask Tangyuan yourself."

"That won't do either. Please put me down, or Tangyuan will worry." When they arrived at the front door, Tian Yu still wanted to get down.

"We've arrived. So when can I marry you?" Chen Chong stopped at the door without going in, and looked into Tian Yu's eyes as he asked.

"Ah! Hmm? Why don't we go inside first?" Tian Yu was a little afraid to look Chen Chong in the dark, bright eyes.

"Village head, even Grandma Gouzi knows about you. Today, Zhao Jinxin also asked me if I like you."

"So what did you say?" Tian Yu felt a little flustered by Chen Chong's intense gaze, and looked around to avoid eye contact.

"I admit it! I said I want to marry you!"

"You, you shouldn't have said that, I... I wasn't ready." Tian Yu looked directly into Chen Chong's eyes, intending to blame him, but the words came out softly and almost inaudibly.

Chen Chong looked at Tian Yu's moving lips, then lowered his head. Tian Yu saw his face approaching, and his eyes drawing ever closer, and instinctively covered her mouth with her hand. Chen Chong paused, looking at Tian Yu for a long time, before finally gently pressing his lips to her hand. Although it was just a light kiss, Tian Yu's cheeks flushed. She lowered her head, not daring to look at Chen Chong again, letting him carry her into the house and massage her feet. Tang Yuan kept asking what had happened. Tian Yu reassured him that it was nothing, just a sprained ankle. After Chen Chong finished tidying Tian Yu up, he was about to leave. Tian Yu wanted to say that it was getting dark and the road was dangerous, so she should stay. But before she could speak, Chen Chong said he had things to do these next few days and wouldn't be coming for a while, telling her to rest at home, and then he vanished. Tian Yu, her hand still outstretched, exchanged a glance with Tang Yuan. Tang Yuan said, "Mommy, what's wrong with Uncle Chen? He seems angry."

"He seems angry!?"

"What did Mother do to offend Uncle Chen?"

"No! I didn't provoke him, did I?" Tian Yu said, but she herself was unsure, wondering if it was because of what had just happened.

"Oh? Then there is. Mother, you should apologize to Uncle Chen as soon as possible."

"Why? I didn't do anything wrong!"

"Didn't you hear Uncle Chen say he won't be coming these past few days?" Tangyuan also had his own plans; if Chen Chong didn't come, who would he learn archery from!

"If he's not coming, he's not coming. He has something to do, so he'll come back once it's over."

"Alright, it's good that Mother thinks everything is alright."
