Chapter 30 Stay together

When they returned, Chen Chong was still there. Tangyuan had run off to play with Maorong. Tianyu asked him why he hadn't left yet, as it was getting dark. Chen Chong said he and Zhao Jinxin had agreed that he would stay there from now on. Tianyu looked at him in surprise, thinking he had gone mad. But Chen Chong explained that it was to watch over their belongings; if something were stolen, it would be a huge loss, and besides, it wasn't safe for just the two of them, especially since the courtyard wall had been torn down. After hearing Chen Chong's explanation, Tianyu thought it made sense and asked, "Then where will you sleep?"

"Just make do next to the haystack where you cook."

Tian Yu looked around and saw there was no better place, so she had no choice but to accept it. She found a quilt and made him up, then went back to the shed with Tangyuan to tidy up and rest.

After Tangyuan fell asleep, Tianyu couldn't fall asleep at all. She wondered if it was because Chen Chong was there. Just then, Chen Chong stood outside the shed and called out softly, "Tianyu, are you asleep?"

"No, what's wrong?" Tian Yu thought something was wrong, so she got up to check.

"Don't get up, it's quite cold outside. I can't sleep and want to talk to you for a while."

Ignoring Chen Chong's words, Tian Yu dressed, pulled the covers over herself, and stepped out of the tent. Looking at Chen Chong standing under the moon, Tian Yu was at a loss for what to do. She sensed that he had something on his mind and seemed very lonely. Despite his tall stature, he couldn't hide that sense of loneliness. Tian Yu stepped forward and gently hugged him, softly asking, "What's wrong? What happened?"

"It's nothing, I just missed you and wanted to see you." Chen Chong gently hugged Tian Yu back.

"We're together all day, and I still want to watch it all day. Aren't you tired of it?"

"I don't find it greasy. Daytime doesn't count; I can only sneak peeks and have to pretend I'm not familiar with it and don't like it."

“I don’t like it either, but I’ll wait a bit longer. Once the house is built, I’ll find a way to tell everyone about my divorce.”

"Okay, but don't make me wait too long. It feels terrible to have someone you like right in front of you but not be able to acknowledge them."

"No, I don't like it either."

The two hugged for a long time. To comfort Chen Chong, Tian Yu pushed him away and said seriously, "How about I recite a poem for you?"

"I won't listen! You've gotten addicted to teaching Tangyuan to recite poems every day, and now you want to teach me too?" Chen Chong thought he had misheard, paused for a moment, and then refused as he walked towards the haystack.

"No, I guarantee you'll like it. Why don't you listen to it first?" Tian Yu also tried to recommend it, unwilling to give up.

"You'd better sing me a song, or just sit with me and watch the moon together."

"If I finish reciting it and you don't like it, I'll sing you another song. Okay?"

"Okay, recite it and let me hear it. I'll see what kind of poem you recommend so highly."

“Then listen carefully, umm,” Tian Yuqing cleared her throat before speaking slowly and deliberately:

The farthest distance in the world

The farthest distance in the world

Not life and death

Instead, I am standing in front of you.

But you don't know that I love you.

The farthest distance in the world

It's not me standing in front of you.

But you don't know that I love you.

Instead, they clearly knew they loved each other.

But they can't be together

The farthest distance in the world

It's not that they clearly knew they loved each other.

But they can't be together

Instead...

Chen Chong didn't want to listen anymore, so he reached out and lifted Tian Yu's chin, kissing her lips as she was still speaking. Tian Yu stared blankly for a long time at Chen Chong's slightly closed eyes so close to hers, his long eyelashes, feeling his warm lips gently rubbing against hers. She gently closed her eyes, and Chen Chong felt that Tian Yu was no longer resisting, so he gradually deepened the kiss.

When Tian Yu was really sleepy, it was already dawn, so she had to get up and cook breakfast. The workers were already at work right after breakfast. Thinking about what happened last night, she realized that if she hadn't stopped herself from running back to her tent with a blushing face and a racing heart, things might have escalated to who knows how far, keeping her up all night. Because of what happened last night, Chen Chong's gaze towards Tian Yu was even more intense and profound. Tian Yu didn't dare look at Chen Chong all day, afraid he would do something inappropriate or that others would notice something. So, after breakfast and getting ready, Tian Yu took Tangyuan and Xiaoju out. Tian Yu first went to the wasteland on the mountain to check on the planting, while Tangyuan took Maorong and Xiaoju to the river to find Gouzi and the others.

The plants on the mountain have started to sprout, but if it doesn't rain, they'll probably need to be watered manually soon. Tianyu dug up some wild vegetables and mushrooms nearby, but since she wasn't very good at it, she didn't dare pick any mushrooms she wasn't sure she could handle. When she went to the river to find Tangyuan and the others, the children were playing happily there. With the warmer weather, there were more fish in the river; they could be seen jumping around on the surface from the bank. They encountered an old man from the village fishing. Tianyu bought two large ones, but the old man refused to accept payment, saying they were from the same village and he wanted to give them to Tianyu for free. Tianyu felt this was unfair; even if they were from the same village, she shouldn't take them for free. She finally gave the old man twenty coins, but he said she didn't need that much, so she only took ten coins. On the way back, she dug up some bamboo shoots and deliberately didn't go home until noon. When they returned, the workers were all finishing up and heading home for lunch. Tian Yu didn't have time to worry about anything and busied herself making lunch. Chen washed his hands and helped with the cooking, but Tian Yu always felt he was doing it on purpose. Whenever she turned around, she could always catch him, even though he was always helping out. Tian Yu felt both embarrassed and annoyed, but since there were other people around, she couldn't say anything and could only lower her head and slip away. She simply stewed two fish with fresh bamboo shoots and served them with the garlic sprouts she had pickled the day before. The others showered Tian Yu with compliments, which she was getting tired of hearing. No matter what she cooked, they all thought it was delicious. She didn't know if they had never eaten anything good before or if her cooking skills were truly exceptional.
