Chapter 40: The Abyss (2/2)

Ling Lang: "Why are you still in a daze? If you don't leave now, I won't wait for you anymore."

"Here I come."

The inspection passage ahead was guarded by someone. Ling Lang didn't know what he said to them. They simply asked Pei Xi's name and age and let her pass.

Pei Xiqing was always feeling uneasy.

She felt guilty and guilty.

Such a powerful base, yet she managed to sneak in, and she's just a zombie.

However, this idea was completely dispelled when he saw other zombies in the inner city.

The moment she stared at the zombies across the cage, a powerful sense of despair and sorrow filled her heart.

There was no rationality in their eyes. Almost every corner of their bodies, every inch of skin and bones were pierced by special iron chains, nailing them firmly to the cage. As soon as they saw people, they opened their mouths to bite, and then the chains in their jaws would take effect, tearing the festering skin on their faces, forcing them to remain quiet with an attitude of absolute obedience.

Pei Xiqing was stunned.

I couldn't move for a moment.

Perhaps because her body did not have the same blood as theirs, her body instantly turned cold, as if she felt the same pain as them. Her face turned pale and she felt as if her skin was being pulled.

Ling Lang frowned and came over to pull her away.

He explained in a low voice: "Don't look at them, these things are no longer considered human beings, not even zombies."

"Why?"

"Initially, they were all living test subjects at the base, newly infected zombies, used for research and drug trials. As more people became infected, some at the base became mentally ill."

Ling Lang sneered as he spoke, "Most of them are powerful, and their hands are stained with too much blood. Some simply like to take women in, while others, unable to withstand the high pressure of the apocalypse, dig out those closest to them who have long since turned into zombies from the mountain of corpses."

"At first, it was euphemistically called mourning and remembrance. Later, when they realized they couldn't control the zombies' mutated power, they put these special chains on them, trapping them in cages for life. Later, it's not an exaggeration to say they were gradually becoming pets and poultry."

Pei Xiqing's eyes were filled with shock. "Queen, now you're...just throwing me out on the street like this?"

What's the difference between this and displaying cheap goods on the street? There is no privacy and no dignity.

"That's what you want," Ling Lang replied. "As for the merchandise being displayed like this, they're all monsters being tamed. Once they're strapped with the chains, their fate is sealed."

He did not continue to explain, but Pei Xiqing could roughly guess that behind this, there must have been a certain trading industry chain formed in Wuli a long time ago. The links were linked together, and the layers of protection and connivance led to the emergence of this black industry.

Pei Xiqing was pulled away by Ling Lang before she could stay for long.

She looked back, her eyes full of helplessness.

There were almost no vendors on both sides of the street, only cages pushed out. There were at least hundreds of cages along the street, and all the zombies were locked tightly in the cages, unable to live or die.

No wonder the base doesn't allow any zombies to enter, because once a zombie enters, even their zombie identity will be stripped away.

She thought the base was the salvation of all mankind, but in reality, where there are people, there is money and desire, and these things will give rise to all kinds of things.

Pei Xiqing followed Ling Lang to the North Courtyard with mixed feelings.

North Courtyard seemed to be a general term for the area north of the base's inner city, because the street she had just walked through had a completely different style.

It is the housing area in the north surrounding the central military ship.

If the southwest side we just came from was a building like a bunk bed, this side is a world of high-rise buildings except for the central base.

Not sure if every base was like this, she asked, "Which base is this?"

Ling Lang gave the command to unlock one of the large iron doors, pushed it open and led her in, saying as they walked, "Third Base. I rarely come here. I'm either leading a team at the First Base or doing infrastructure construction at the Fifth Base. This is my second time here."

"So the infrastructure of this base is only average?"

"You could say that. Anyway, I don't feel anything. It doesn't matter which base I'm in, as long as I can get missions." Ling Lang said broadly, "But I haven't paid attention to these yet. When you have time, you can go to other bases to take a look and compare them yourself."

"Uh-huh."

In fact, she has no interest anymore.

It is estimated that the larger the base, the more "monsters" like those on the streets there are.

The end of the world has brought considerable shadows and trauma to the human body and mind, but this is not a reason for them to abuse their lives with this excuse.

Sometimes she should be thankful that her daughter had no connection with the human base. It didn't matter if she was simply involved with a man. If she had entered such a cannibalistic place, she would probably have been imprisoned for the rest of her life and cried to death. She didn't even know if the men she had hooked up with before saw her, and she had no idea how many hands she would have been bought and sold through.

Pei Xiqing shuddered.

There shouldn't be anything in this base unless I've hooked up with someone before.

She rubbed the goose bumps on her arms and glanced around secretly. No one was around. All the faces she had met along the way seemed unfamiliar. In addition, she was wearing a mask and was wrapped up tightly, so it should be difficult for her to be recognized.

Just as she breathed a sigh of relief, someone behind her called out in surprise, "Isn't this Miss Pei?!"

"Oh my, really? Tsk tsk tsk tsk, why are you back again?"
