Chapter 38 Childhood Trauma

Xi Xi waited until the coordinates of the treasure chest on the map were on the same horizontal line as the car before she finally stopped the car.

When she opened the car door and got out, she was immediately rendered speechless by the heat outside the car.

She looked up at the position of the sun, which seemed to be almost overhead.

"So it's already this time?" Xi Xi sighed, pulling down her hat brim as she walked towards the desert on her left.

The intense sunlight unleashed an indescribable force, whipping up waves of heat that surged and roared like boiling water.

Hot air intertwines and collides in the air, forming distorted beams of light and shadow that twist the surrounding scenery into a dreamlike state, both real and illusory.

Xi Xi saw the distant desert scenery swaying gracefully in the hot wind, like reflections in water, gently rocking with the waves, making it difficult to discern their true appearance.

According to the pixel map, both treasure chests are very close to the road, so Xi Xi did not bring the skateboard. After all, traveling long distances by skateboard would require climbing to the highest point of the sand dunes, and there was no need to go through that trouble for such a short distance.

The first treasure chest was hidden behind a dead tree. Xi Xi carefully stepped over the nearly withered, thorny vegetation and dragged the basic wooden treasure chest to an open area.

Congratulations on receiving 1 green onion!

Congratulations on obtaining 1 piece of ginger!

Congratulations on receiving 1 garlic!

[Successfully obtained a low-level treasure chest*1. Congratulations, adventurer, you have gained 10 survival points.]

"?" Xi Xi was stunned. What was this? The three giants of childhood vegetable trauma? Inside the treasure chest, there were three compartments containing a bunch of scallions, a piece of ginger, and a purple garlic.

"Alright..." Xi Xi dragged the box for a while with some helplessness, then stopped after thinking for a moment, opened the treasure chest and took out all the scallions, ginger and garlic, stuffing them into her backpack.

With so little to carry around, Xi Xi felt it wasn't worth it.

Moreover, even if the basic treasure chest is kept, it only has two storage slots.

In an instant, the beginner treasure chest disappeared before her eyes with a burst of light particles. Xi Xi opened the light screen map and began searching for the second treasure chest.

She followed the markers on the pixel map and soon arrived at a vast expanse of sand and gravel.

Fine pebbles were scattered across the sand like stars, making it very uncomfortable to walk on.

Xi Xi patiently walked quickly around the gravelly ground, her eyes eagerly searching for the treasure chest, but she couldn't find any trace of it, which puzzled her.

Left with no other choice, Xi Xi moved the light screen map to her side, keeping a close eye on the flashing dot on the map while carefully looking around. However, after walking around again, she still found nothing and couldn't find any trace of the treasure chest.

The midday sun grew increasingly intense, so Xi Xi had no choice but to walk to the base of a huge sandstone rock and find a shady spot to sit down and rest for a while.

She had thought she would soon find the treasure chest and return laden with spoils, so she hadn't brought any drinking water to keep things light, but she never expected to run into this mess. Her mouth was dry, and Xi Xi was filled with regret.

She took off her baseball cap and gently fanned herself with the brim, trying to bring some coolness. Then she placed her heavy backpack on the gravel beside her and carefully examined the map again, confirming it repeatedly.

"It's clearly right here, why can't I find it?" Xi Xi muttered to herself, kicking a small pebble in frustration, thinking to herself: Could this map be wrong?

Just as Xi Xi took a deep breath, slung her backpack back over her shoulder, and prepared to explore the gravel area again, her toes suddenly tripped hard on a protruding sandstone...

She stumbled, making quite a commotion, and after finally regaining her balance, she looked back with some confusion.

A gust of hot wind slowly swept in, carrying rolling heat waves, causing the fine sand and coarse gravel to rub against each other, producing a subtle but continuous "rustling" sound.

The wind swept silently by, carrying with it a low rumble from the towering sand dunes in the distance. The two sounds intertwined, creating an inexplicable sense of unease.

For some reason, Xi Xi sensed something was wrong, and she instantly froze on the spot.

Her gaze sharpened and became cautious as she carefully scanned her surroundings.

As far as the eye could see, rocks of various shapes and sizes were scattered across this vast desert, and there was no sign of any other living creatures.

Time passed slowly, and the surroundings remained calm. Xi Xi's tense nerves relaxed slightly, and she couldn't help but let out a long sigh of relief.

Was she overthinking things? She wondered to herself as she continued walking forward.

Just then, Xi Xi inadvertently glanced at the light screen beside her, only to suddenly discover that a red dot on the map had appeared out of nowhere behind her!

Her heart skipped a beat, and she knew something was wrong. Almost simultaneously, her body reacted instinctively, even faster than her brain could process it.

She moved with the agility of a feline, swiftly crouching down and rolling to one side at lightning speed.

Just as Xi Xi left her spot, an enormous cone-shaped spike suddenly burst forth from the ground, shooting straight upwards with a fierce momentum.

Then, like a javelin thrown with great force, it pierced the spot where Xi Xi had just stood.

With a deep, muffled thud, the ground trembled violently, stirring up thick layers of dust that blotted out the sun, as if a sudden sandstorm had swept across the land.
