Chapter 75 Protracted War

"Oh dear, my dear grandson, don't cry..." The little old lady with a wrinkled face struggled to prop herself up and peeked out from the back seat.

She reached out her calloused hand and stroked her grandson's head.

To everyone's surprise, the little boy cried even harder, repeatedly shouting "I'm hungry," his small body tumbling and twisting in the passenger seat, trying to break free of the seatbelt that restrained him.

The old woman felt even more sorry for the child and quickly bent down to lean forward, constantly murmuring words to comfort him.

The little girl, squeezed to the side, shrank into her older sister's arms in fear, while the older sister pursed her lips and remained silent.

"I told you to stay there for the night, but you insisted on coming up here!" The prolonged crying and fussing were getting annoying, and the old man in the back row by the window turned his head impatiently.

He glared at his wife and yelled angrily, "You spendthrift woman, always coming up with terrible ideas!"

The old woman instantly flew into a rage. She straightened her back, pointed her finger at the old man's nose without backing down, and shouted back, "Who am I doing this for?"

"Isn't it all for you three, grandfather and granddaughter? That little hussy is all alone, driving such a huge car, how could it not be full of good stuff? Use your brain!"

After saying that, the old woman angrily patted her sleeves, as if to vent her dissatisfaction.

Then, as if remembering something, she added, "Besides, I was just making a suggestion, and it was with Ashi's consent, wasn't it?"

"Stop arguing! If you keep arguing, get out of the car!" The middle-aged man in the driver's seat, called Shi, looked extremely tired, with dark circles under his eyes. He frowned and shouted at the back seat in an unfriendly tone.

Upon hearing this angry shout, the elderly men and women in the back row, who had been at odds with each other, instantly fell silent, not daring to utter another word.

The only sound in the car now was the little boy's unreasonable crying. Gradually, the child seemed to have cried himself to sleep, sobbing softly.

The middle-aged man gripped the steering wheel tightly with both hands, staring intently at the minivan in front of him.

He had originally planned that by the end of the day, he would be exhausted, and the person in the car in front of him would eventually stop for the night. Even if he was completely drained, he had plenty of energetic people at home, so he wasn't afraid of being outmatched by a young girl.

Furthermore, he had clearly seen that the woman was covered in bloodstains, which indicated that she had been in a fierce battle, so he was quite certain that she didn't have much strength left.

It was based on these considerations that he agreed to his mother's suggestion to follow him.

But now, his stamina was almost depleted, and there was no sign of the road slowing down at all... A deep anxiety rose in the man's heart.

With so many mouths to feed, he was the only one driving around searching for the treasure chests. Even if he had eight arms, he couldn't manage it all.

A shadow fell over the man's eyes. He turned to look at his once beloved youngest son, and his gaze unconsciously turned to one of disgust.

Hiding by the side of the car window, Xi Xi was nervously watching the private car following behind, a bad feeling rising in her heart.

"Didn't that middle-aged man already start a fire on the spot? Why did he drive here again?" Xi Xi frowned, only then remembering the [Mileage Ranking] released today.

She did win first place, but she remembered that the second place winner was also a Chinese person whose name started with CHN.

Thinking of this, Xi Xi's eyes suddenly turned sharp as knives. She quickly opened the light screen and carefully checked the last digit of the license plate of the car on the second list.

"CNH****601," she muttered to herself, then cautiously peered out through the gap in the curtains.

Sure enough, the license plate of that car matched the number on the list exactly, clearly showing the three digits 601.

Xi Xi lowered her head and pondered, already having some idea of their motives for following her so persistently.

She didn't believe this family was simply trying to form an alliance with her. Xi Xi felt they either wanted to surpass her and take first place on the mileage leaderboard, or they coveted her car and supplies; more seriously, she guessed they had both intentions.

Xi Xi secretly memorized the car's complete license plate number.

Oh well, let them be! I'm using autopilot anyway, so I don't need to expend any physical energy. If things really get out of hand, I'm the one who'll suffer.

Thinking this, Xi Xi stopped paying attention. She finished tidying up and then lightly touched the button. The back seat slowly lowered, and in the blink of an eye, a spacious and comfortable sofa bed appeared in front of her.

Unable to go out to find snacks, the little white duck curled up in the carpet, dozing off. Xi Xi was somewhat surprised to see it not staying up late, which was a rare occurrence.

Aura, on the other hand, was quite energetic, exploring the new car and showing great interest in the leather seats.

Seeing this, Xi Xi had no choice but to rummage through the supplies and find a piece of dead wood, which she casually tossed to Aura to sharpen his claws.

After doing all this, Xi Xi picked up the thick military overcoat and covered herself with it. After giving a few instructions to Aura, who was on night watch, she went to sleep early.

Xi Xi slept soundly that night, her dream of light and shadow lingering throughout the entire darkness. She was not awakened until the sun rose the next morning by the sounds of Aura and the little white duck playing and jumping around.

"Stop fooling around..." Xi Xi rubbed her eyes and sat up.

She yawned, summoned the light screen, and then clicked the sign-in button.

The bamboo divination stick container in the light screen began to shake, and Xi Xi quietly moved to the car window, lifted a corner of the curtain, and looked outside.

Just as she expected, the whole family had indeed disappeared last night.

She breathed a sigh of relief, and with a bit of a laugh, picked up the bamboo skewer that had fallen onto the sofa bed. After taking a closer look, she immediately felt refreshed; her dizziness and blurred vision disappeared, and she felt incredibly healthy.
