Chapter 17 Colleagues in the Tavern

After a few rounds of drinks, the noise in the bar subsided somewhat. Quite a few people had fallen asleep on the tables, while others leaned against the walls, expressing their affections to the erotic posters on the walls...

Only the area near the bar was still very lively.

The bearded man was already seven-tenths drunk, and at this point he was having even more fun, directly performing drinking through his nose in front of everyone.

He inserted two straws into his nose and put the other end into a glass full of wine, which was quickly emptied.

"Sam! Sam! Sam..."

His name was called out by those around him, clearly his amazing skill had broadened their horizons and won their approval; even the soldier who had been feeling somewhat bitter was impressed.

Big Beard is a real gem; he really made us proud today.

Joey was already half-drunk. He raised his glass and took a small sip, not wanting to drink any more. After all, the bearded man had already exceeded the goal of two people, so he decided to stay sober to avoid making a fool of himself.

"I heard that Lady Catherine and Captain Puff encountered orcs today!"

Joey overheard the conversation between the two people at the next table, and he immediately picked up his wine glass and sat down at their wooden table.

Any news today?

Joey raised his glass and clinked it against the two men's glasses, asking absentmindedly a question.

When the two saw that it was Joey coming over, the blush on their cheeks deepened with excitement.

They had completely adapted to Joey's presence, treating him like an old man from Tiger Rock Mountain, and had no suspicions whatsoever. Even if they did, those suspicions had long since dissipated with the wine in their hands.

"You're new here, so you might not know, but today Lady Catherine and Captain Puff went out. They were just planning to collect some loose silver as usual and come back, but they ran into a small orc squad!"

The man in chainmail was probably an archer. He spoke in a low voice, as if he didn't want others to hear. After all, one needs to be careful when discussing one's leader behind their back.

"Orcs? I've heard they're ruthless monsters who kill without blinking an eye!"

Joey pretended to be completely unaware, and even showed a hint of fear.

"Look at you, you coward! I was just treating you like an old hand, but I didn't expect you to be a newbie at heart, hahaha!"

"What's so scary about orcs? They just haven't met us yet. We can take them down one by one with an arrow. This time, Captain Pouf wiped out the entire orc squad!"

After he finished speaking, he made a gesture as if he were shooting an arrow, as if there really was an orc in front of him who had been shot right between the eyebrows.

"Captain Pouf is really amazing!"

Joey complimented Puff, following his words, while simultaneously conjuring up Puff's stern face in his mind.

"Of course, he is the city lord's personal bodyguard. I have never seen him lose in close combat. It's just that Lady Catherine insisted on coming here to see, so the city lord sent him to protect her!"

Joey listened and nodded, having gathered some more useful information.

"Now that they've won the battle, why don't they come to the tavern for a drink?"

Joey thought for a moment, then leaned closer to him and asked again.

"belch--"

The archer burped and then fell asleep on the table.

"Useless! You passed out after drinking so little!"

Another person at his table picked up his glass, took a big gulp, and said, also somewhat drunk.

"I know about this. I hadn't changed shifts when they came back, and I happened to be right at the entrance of the village!"

"As soon as I got back, Lady Catherine threw a huge tantrum, saying that Captain Pouf was too cowardly and lacked the resolve to fight the orcs!"

"Captain Puff cautiously advised Lady Catherine, saying that retreating to Ashforge was for her safety. The orcs we encountered today were just an outpost. If the rest of the orc force arrives, our outpost at Tigerstone Mountain will have to be withdrawn!"

These words contain a lot of information. It seems that Miss Catherine still has a temper. Not only is Pouf strong in combat, but he also has his own ideas about the situation. However, the final decision still depends on Catherine's opinion, after all, she is the leader here now.

"Captain Puff is right. If several thousand orcs come, we won't be able to hold them off with our small numbers!"

Joey nodded in agreement, and at the same time refilled the glass of the person next to him.

"You're right. I don't want to lose my life here because of Lady Catherine's capriciousness. I hope Captain Pouf can persuade her!"

"They went straight to the council chamber as soon as they returned, so they should have reached a conclusion by now, after all this time!"

After he finished speaking, he glanced at the entrance of the tavern, thinking that Puff and the others would come to the tavern for a few drinks after they finished their discussion.

Inside the council chamber.

Puff's face was visibly grim, but he held back his emotions and did not lash out.

Catherine pouted, seemingly also harboring a lot of anger.

An old man dressed in a white robe with nine knots hanging from his body sighed, took a carrier pigeon from an iron cage, tied a rolled-up letter to its leg, walked slowly to the window, gently pushed open a window, and tossed the carrier pigeon into the air. The pigeon flapped its wings and flew north.
