"Rustle, rustle—"
The chirping of insects outside the house had not yet subsided when three figures began to walk towards the gold rush town under the cover of night.
"Big Beard, hold onto the sword, you might need it later!"
Joey handed a longsword to the bearded man behind him and continued walking at the front of the group.
“Joey, aren’t we being too cautious? Didn’t the bearded man say that nobody in town is looking for me anymore?”
Catherine walked to the back of the line and, after hearing Joey's words, couldn't help but ask a question.
"Better safe than sorry. Judging from the information Big Beard has gathered, no ships are allowed to leave the port at night. It seems the matter of arresting you is not over yet!"
Joey shared the information the bearded man had gathered the day before: although there was no tense atmosphere in town now, and the posters outside were long gone, the ban on ships leaving the port at night was probably still targeting them.
Since nighttime travel wasn't an option, Joey decided to take advantage of the early morning hours, when the port was open for navigation, and use the sailboat he had left behind to leave as quickly as possible.
The three left rather early, hoping to avoid being seen by the town's eyes and ears.
They arrived near the port early and found a secluded corner to wait for dawn.
From this position, Joey could already see the sailboat that he and the bearded man had pulled ashore, but the house nearby responsible for guarding the harbor was still pitch black, presumably the guard was still fast asleep.
"ha--"
The bearded man yawned, apparently because he had gotten up too early and was still feeling sleepy.
"Why don't you two sleep a little longer? I'll keep an eye on things!"
Catherine felt that Joey was doing all this for her sake, and thinking about how the two of them had been taking care of her these past few days, she suddenly felt a little guilty, so she suggested that Joey take charge of the guard duty.
"Then you better not fall asleep, wake me up if anyone comes!"
Joey had put a lot of thought into today's trip and hadn't slept well last night. Seeing that Catherine was unusually responsible, he agreed to her suggestion.
"Don't worry, I won't fall asleep!"
Catherine patted her chest to assure them, and perhaps because she used too much force, her breasts jiggled slightly.
"Well, this is one of the few perks I've gotten for taking care of you these past few days, you silly girl!"
Joey murmured something to himself, then closed his eyes contentedly along with the bearded man.
I don't know how long I slept.
Joey didn't hear Catherine wake him up in the middle of the night, which allowed him to sleep quite well.
He was only awakened from his sleep when he noticed the light in front of him getting brighter and brighter.
He opened his sleepy eyes and was immediately startled, his whole body becoming alert.
The sun was already high in the sky, and there were already quite a few people around. Some people would occasionally glance at the three of them.
Joey turned to look for Catherine and found her lying on his lap, using his lap as a pillow, fast asleep. The spot where his lap had touched her red lips was already soaked.
“Catherine!”
Joey was furious. Catherine was never reliable; she was even more of a liar than Big Beard.
He yelled and pulled his leg back at the same time.
"What's wrong?"
Catherine slowly woke up, stretched lazily, and asked languidly before even opening her eyes.
"I'm going to sell you right now!"
Seeing Catherine like this, Joey became even angrier. He couldn't understand how she dared to fall asleep; she was the target of these people's attack!
Catherine was startled by Joey's words and came to her senses. She looked at the sun and the figures around her, and gave an awkward smile.
"I didn't do it on purpose! I clearly remember being on guard!"
"It must be the sea breeze. The sea breeze is so comfortable that I accidentally fell asleep!"
Catherine knew she was in the wrong, but she was in a hurry to find someone to take the blame, so she chose the sea breeze, since the sea breeze wouldn't object anyway.
Joey's face darkened immediately. He was starting to regret it. How could he have ended up with such a woman? He was speechless.
"Joey, we should go!"
The bearded man woke up at this moment and, seeing that there were more and more people around, he spoke up and reminded Joey.
Talk is talk, jokes are jokes, but we still have to get serious business done.
He got up and walked towards the room first, leaving the bearded man and Catherine to wait where they were.
Everything went smoothly, except for a two-silver-coin management fee, after which the port guard told Joey he could sail away.
To minimize Catherine's public appearances, Joey didn't have the bearded man help him tug the boat; instead, he slowly dragged the sailboat from the shore into the water by himself.
"puff--"
The sailboat was launched into the water, and the planks, which had been dry for more than ten days, began to absorb seawater. Joey also began to make adjustments.
"Joey!"
Suddenly, the bearded man's anxious voice came from the shore.
Joey, who was busy adjusting the sailboat, suddenly looked up and saw the bearded man and Catherine running towards him in a hurry, followed by six or seven people who were chasing after them with longswords.
Charlie!
Among the chasing crowd was Charlie, the mayor's son.
He limped as he ran and fell to the back of the group, but the expression on his face seemed to indicate that he was very angry.
Joey had also seen the other six men; they were the six warriors in that secluded wooden hut.
"Run faster!"
Joey felt that the six men were in great danger, and disregarding the sailboat that was not yet fully adjusted, he started to raise the mainsail while shouting loudly at the bearded man.
