Inside Captain Zoro's office.
"Vivian can't leave, she can't go with you!"
Upon hearing what Joey said, Captain Zoro stood up abruptly from his chair, his expression dignified.
"My dear commander, I don't want her to leave either! She said it herself!"
Who can know the pain in Joey's heart? He was the one who least wanted Vivian to leave.
After all, Catherine was gone, and he hadn't seen a single pretty girl in this vast military base—or rather, he hadn't seen a single female. This was undoubtedly bad news for someone who needed women to provide him with emotional comfort.
“She is Goodman’s lover and my granddaughter’s mother. I will arrange for her to go to Baron City, and my Salman family will treat them both well!”
Captain Zoro walked up to Joey, his eyes sharp and his tone authoritative, leaving no room for argument.
"Hehe, my lord, I was just saying. If you really intend to send them, mother and daughter, to Baron City, I can even help you persuade Vivian!"
What does it mean to be opportunistic and change course with the wind?
What does it mean to be adaptable?
This is Joey's way of doing things.
You see, his ultimate destination is Baron City. If Vivian can go there first, that would be great. Maybe we can see each other often in the future.
Of course, most importantly, he can't afford to offend Captain Zoro right now, especially since this job was arranged for him by Zoro.
Both logically and emotionally, we should cooperate at this time.
"That's the best way to put it!"
"You lead the team to kill those ungrateful kobolds first, just to practice your skills. Vivian will stay here for now, and we'll talk to her when you get back!"
Seeing Joey's change in attitude, Captain Zoro's emotions also calmed down.
He understood that he and Vivian didn't have much to talk about and weren't familiar with each other. Joey, on the other hand, was much better at being the mediator than him.
"Yes, I came here to thank you. You immediately gave me the job of team leader!"
"Then you'd better do a good job. If you don't do a good job, your position as acting team leader could be revoked at any time!"
"Of course, I will definitely do my best!"
You still have to say nice things, it's just a waste of breath, and it doesn't cost Joey any gold coins, so Joey is happy to do it.
"Then go and prepare!"
Captain Zoro had already started to ask them to leave; this Joey just wouldn't stop talking, and he'd had enough.
Joey gave a military salute, turned, and walked towards the door.
However, as he reached the door, he suddenly turned back to look at Captain Zoro, and asked with a silly grin, "My lord, I'm currently the acting captain. So... how much is my monthly salary?"
...
Captain Zoro has really had enough.
He had some doubts about whether what Sergeant Medes told him after he returned was true. Did this Joey really have such outstanding command skills?
It seems a bit infuriating no matter how you look at it.
"20 gold coins!"
"But let me make this clear: if you fail to give proper command, I will punish you severely!"
"How many?"
Joey's eyes widened like saucers, thinking he had misheard. Back when he was an ordinary soldier at Tiger Rock, he only had 120 silver coins!
One silver coin and one gold coin—these are completely different units of settlement!
20 gold coins are equivalent to 2000 silver coins!
Joey felt like she had reached the pinnacle of her life!
"Not enough?"
"If you can take on the role of captain, you will receive 30 gold coins once you become the official captain!"
Captain Zoro had already sat back down in his chair, no longer wanting to look up at Joey; that kid just kept poking fun at him.
"It's not too little, it's not too little. It's all for the people, for protecting our country. How can it be measured in money?"
"And I will definitely be able to take on this captaincy, yes, I absolutely must be able to take on this role!"
Joey suddenly changed his expression, becoming very serious and focused, completely different from before.
He was no longer thinking about the 20 gold coins, but about the 30 gold coins he would receive after becoming a full-fledged employee; that was his current goal.
However, these words made Captain Zoro's eyes light up. It seems that this kid does have some merit and is not just a troublesome guy who only makes people angry.
"Yes, I'll be waiting for your good news!"
Captain Zoro waved his hand, once again issuing an order to leave.
Joey ran out, completely satisfied.
The bearded man outside the door hadn't heard the conversation inside and didn't know why Joey had suddenly become so agitated, as if he had taken dozens of gold coins from the house.
"Big Beard, you'd better do a good job this time. You absolutely, positively, absolutely cannot let me down!"
"My happy life depends on you!"
Joey patted the bearded man's shoulder solemnly, placing high hopes on him.
After all, the expectation of 30 gold coins is quite high.
The bearded man didn't understand what Joey was saying, but he kept nodding.
Why bother understanding so clearly? Just follow Joey's lead, that's what the bearded man was thinking.
The two returned to their lodgings, and Joey relayed what Captain Zoro had said to Vivian.
“I don’t want to go to Barron’s. I don’t know anyone there. My old village is more suitable for me, and I think it will be more suitable for my children!”
"Besides, I don't care about Salman's family. I only loved Goodman as a person, not their great family!"
