Yu Yunzhi took the snacks home to eat. Her father had classes in the afternoon, so he ate lunch in the cafeteria and didn't come back.
After Yu Yunzhi, his mother, and Jiang Jiang finished eating the snacks Yu Yunzhi had bought at home, it was already 1 p.m.
Yu Yunzhi called Yu Luoyan to confirm that she would be home by 6 p.m.
"Zhizhi, Mom is going to the supermarket to buy some fruit, do you want to come?"
Yu's mother, carrying a canvas bag, asked Yu Yunzhi, who had collapsed on the sofa after eating.
Tonight is New Year's Eve, so we definitely need to eat something good. Yu's father just called to ask what they wanted to eat tonight. He took on the responsibility of buying groceries, but Yu's mother felt that something was still missing.
My daughters are finally back, so I'll definitely buy them lots of food.
“I’ll go with you!” Yu Yunzhi sat up. After returning home, she was like a leech to her mother, wanting to follow her wherever her mother went.
Yu Yunzhi took his coat and helped Jiang Jiang get dressed first. Yu's mother then put a small bag on Jiang Jiang's back.
"Wow! So cute! Why don't I have one~" Yu Yunzhi immediately took a liking to the little bag that Yu's mother had given Jiang Jiang. It was obvious that Yu's mother had made it.
"Yes, yes, yes, you have one too, yours is in the room."
Yu's mother went into her room, took out a bag that was exactly the same as the small bag Jiang Jiang was carrying, but a larger version, and gave it to Yu Yunzhi.
Yu Yunzhi took it and saw that it indeed had her logo on it. Jiang Jiang's bag didn't have little clouds on it, but hers did.
"I love you~" Yu Yunzhi hugged his mother and kissed her cheek.
"There are a few more. We'll show them to you when we get back. I was planning to show them to you last night, but it was too late and I forgot."
Yu's mother held Jiang Jiang's hand and waited for Yu Yunzhi to put on his hat and mask before they went out together.
That evening, before Yu Luoyan even drove downstairs, she saw several people standing there in the distance. As she got closer, she recognized them as her mother, her sister, and her daughter.
Yu Luoyan brought the car to a stop and opened the window.
"Mommy~" Jiang Jiang jumped and bounced excitedly when she saw Yu Luoyan.
"Why did you come out in this cold?" Although that's what Yu Luoyan said, she couldn't deny that she felt happy when she saw them.
This is what home feels like; there's always someone waiting for you to come home.
"Because I want to see my mom soon!"
"Mom also wants to see Jiang Jiang soon. You go upstairs with Grandma and Auntie first, and Mom will park the car and come up, okay?"
"No, we have to wait for Mom!"
"It won't take long to park, sis, hurry up, we'll wait for you here."
Yu Luoyan couldn't persuade them otherwise, so she went to park the car first. The sooner she parked, the sooner they could go in and wouldn't have to stand in the cold.
When the four of them arrived home, Yu's father was still busy in the kitchen. Of the five people in the family, only one was good at cooking.
Hearing the door open, Mr. Yu came out with a rolling pin in his hand and flour on his hands.
"Yan Yan is back!"
It had been a long time since the family had a proper reunion like this. Mr. Yu was a bit sentimental, and seeing his two daughters together inevitably brought him some emotions.
"Yes, Dad."
"Wait a minute, we're just about to make dumplings!" Mr. Yu had already prepared all the other dishes and laid out a large table full of food.
"I want to make dumplings too!" Jiang Jiang excitedly raised her little hand as soon as she heard about making dumplings.
"Okay, let's wait for Grandpa to take it out!"
Mr. Yu has prepared all the dumpling filling; all that's left is to wrap the dumplings. Wrapping dumplings is a family tradition; the whole family wraps dumplings together during the New Year or Chinese New Year.
A coin is placed inside; whoever finds it is considered lucky, signifying good fortune for the coming year.
Yu Yunzhi and Yu Luoyan took Jiang Jiang to wash her hands. When they came out, Yu's father had already taken out all the rolled-out dough wrappers, cleared a space on the table, and placed the dumpling filling, dumpling wrappers, and washed coins.
The five people, four adults and one child, sat together. The two sisters, Yu Yunzhi and Yu Luoyan, couldn't cook at all, but they made dumplings quite well.
This is all thanks to the tradition of my family getting together to make dumplings every year when I was a child.
Yu Yunzhi's dumplings were plump and round; when placed on the table and compared with others, it was immediately obvious which ones she had made.
Jiang Jiang stood on the small stool that Yu Luoyan had prepared for her, which was just enough to reach the table.
They said they came to make dumplings, but it was more like causing trouble. They learned how to make dumplings from Yu's dad for a while, but their hands were still too small to hold them properly, and the dumplings turned out to be messy and unrecognizable.
Either the filling leaked out, the dumpling wrapper wasn't pinched shut, or it broke completely.
After making two or three, Dad Yu couldn't bear to watch any longer. He took a dough ball, scooped out some filling for Jiang Jiang, and let her go play with it.
They can't eat many dumplings, and with other dishes, two plates are about enough.
Yu Yunzhi grabbed the last dumpling wrapper, exclaiming, "I'm going to wrap a coin inside!"
"You take care of it, you take care of it." Everyone else looked at Yu Yunzhi with tenderness.
The last perfect dumpling was presented in Yu Yunzhi's hands. It was the best-looking one she had made that night, in her opinion.
Because this dumpling is neither too big nor too small, it's just the right size.
"Wait a minute, sister, take a picture of me and send it to me later!" Yu Yunzhi held up the dumplings in her palm and asked Yu Luoyan to take a picture of her.
Yu Luoyan glanced at her hands covered in flour, clapped them, took out her phone from her pocket, and took a picture of the dumplings in Yu Yunzhi's hand at her request.
The residual flour on her hands inevitably got onto Yu Luoyan's clothes, but it was fine; she could just wash it off.
Although Yu Luoyan is a germaphobe, she will never be a spoilsport in front of people she cares about.
