The village chief stormed over to Wang Kun's side. When he saw Li Jian lying face down on the ground, his heart skipped a beat. He quickly squatted down and asked, "How is Li Jian?"
Li Jian had a terrible headache and mumbled, "My head hurts."
Upon hearing Li Jian's reply, the village chief looked up at Wang Kun and saw him standing there dumbfounded. He couldn't help but shout, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and help Li Jian up!"
Seeing that the village chief was angry, Wang Kun immediately helped Li Jian up.
When the village chief saw that Li Jian's forehead was injured and his face was covered in blood, he immediately flew into a rage and shouted, "Why did you fight? Don't you know that fighting is wrong? What if you accidentally kill someone? That would mean going to jail!"
Li Jian and Wang Kun felt extremely wronged. Why were they beaten so badly and then scolded?
"Village chief, we were beaten like this by Lin Qinghuan. You must get justice for us," Li Jian said pitifully.
Upon hearing Li Jian's words, the village chief instantly flew into a rage. He glared at Li Jian and angrily cursed, "You bastard, how dare you frame Lin Qinghuan? Are you taking advantage of her honesty, or do you think I'm easy to fool?"
Wang Kun became anxious when he saw that the village chief did not believe Li Jian's words.
"Village chief, it really was Lin Qinghuan who hit me and Li Jian."
“Village chief, you have to believe us, it really was Lin Qinghuan who injured me,” Li Jian said.
Li Jian was filled with anger, humiliation, and resentment; his eyes turned red with rage.
Seeing that Li Jian and Wang Kun were not only fighting but also relentlessly attacking Lin Qinghuan, the village chief's anger grew stronger and stronger until it was uncontrollable. He slapped Wang Kun on the head and roared hoarsely, "Wang Kun, Li Jian, you have ulterior motives. You're slandering Lin Qinghuan for hitting you. Lin Qinghuan is cowardly and weak. She can't possibly beat both of you. You're being kind by not hitting Lin Qinghuan."
Wang Kun covered his head and said with dissatisfaction, "Village chief, why don't you believe what we say?"
Wang Kun was furious that he had been defeated by Lin Qinghuan today.
“Go ask around the village. Who would believe what you’re saying? Are you two trying to frame Lin Qinghuan because she’s mentally challenged, and make her pay your medical bills? Nobody would believe that. As long as I’m here, I will never let that happen,” the village chief said righteously.
Li Jian and Wang Kun had no way to express their grievances. In the past, Lin Qinghuan was indeed someone they could bully, but now Lin Qinghuan was very fierce and beat them so badly that they had no power to fight back.
The village chief stared at Wang Kun and Li Jian and said sternly, "Li Jian, Wang Kun, if you fight again, I'll have the police arrest you and send you to jail for a few days to receive a proper education."
Li Jian and Wang Kun exchanged a glance; it seemed that the beating they had taken today had been for nothing.
"Quickly go find Doctor Li to help treat the injury," the village chief said.
Li Jian helped Wang Kun to Dr. Li's house to see about his injury. The village chief reminded them as they walked away, "You two are not allowed to cause trouble for Lin Qinghuan."
Li Jian and Wang Kun's faces darkened after hearing the village chief's words.
Lin Qinghuan carried a basket on her back and walked along the village path with her head down. She encountered many people along the way, but they all ignored her and did not greet her. Lin Qinghuan also disdained to greet them.
As Lin Qinghuan walked out of the village, she gazed into the distance. The continuous mountain ranges, layer upon layer, stretched from afar, covered in green, standing tall between heaven and earth, looking vibrant and refreshing.
Lin Qinghuan closed her eyes, a gentle breeze caressing her cheeks and ruffling her hair. For a moment, she forgot everything and quietly savored the tranquility.
Lin Qinghuan slowly opened her eyes, her gaze filled with determination, and walked resolutely into the mountains.
Lin Qinghuan walked into the mountains, carefully avoiding the roadside weeds and thorns. She caught sight of some Gynostemma pentaphyllum by the roadside and was delighted. She could pick some to take back and use when her wounds were bleeding.
Lin Qinghuan picked some Gynostemma pentaphyllum and put it in her pocket. She continued walking forward and suddenly saw black grass in the thatch forest. She was overjoyed. This was wild black grass, a very rare herb that could clear heat and detoxify, and could cure influenza, heatstroke, abdominal pain, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and nettles.
Under the scorching sun, Lin Qinghuan braved the heat and trudged through the thatch forest, painstakingly collecting about a pound of black grass.
Lin Qinghuan wiped the sweat from her forehead, looked down at the black grass in the basket on her back, and thought it should sell for about twenty yuan.
Lin Qinghuan's throat was terribly dry, and her face was flushed from the sun. She licked her parched lips, feeling hot and thirsty. She had to go home, or she would get heatstroke.
Lin Qinghuan picked some vines to make a wreath, then found some broad leaves to insert into the wreath, and then wore it on her head to shield herself from the sun.
Lin Qinghuan carried a basket on her back and hurried home. The road was quiet all the way. No one could hear people talking, and even the birds hid. Only the chirping of cicadas could be heard.
Lin Qinghuan saw some ripe yellow berries by the roadside. Her eyes lit up, and she quickly walked closer to the berry tree, eagerly picking the ripe berries and putting them in her mouth.
After eating a few yellow berries, Lin Qinghuan's throat finally felt a little better. Looking at the unripe yellow berries, Lin Qinghuan reached out and picked a handful, put them in her mouth, closed her eyes and chewed them. They were very astringent and a little bitter, but she was too thirsty, so Lin Qinghuan swallowed them.
Lin Qinghuan wiped her mouth and continued on her way under the scorching sun.
Lin Qinghuan suddenly stopped and looked at a long, black snake in the middle of the road ahead, its eyes fixed on her.
