Chapter 15 Entering the City

Lin Qinghuan finally arrived in the county town. Looking at the houses on both sides of the street, there were tiled houses and bungalows, but no thatched houses, unlike Baiyun Village, where there were still many thatched houses.

Lin Qinghuan kept walking forward and finally found a traditional Chinese medicine shop with the words "Renhetang" written on it. Lin Qinghuan went in without hesitation.

An elderly man with half-white hair, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and a Tang suit, was sitting inside the shop reading a book. He was Wu Bo, the owner and doctor of Renhetang, and everyone called him Uncle Wu.

When Uncle Wu saw Lin Qinghuan come in, he put down the book he was holding. Lin Qinghuan glanced at the title and saw that it was actually "Treatise on Febrile Diseases". The book was old and must have been around for many years.

When Uncle Wu saw Lin Qinghuan staring at the book, his eyes flickered for a moment before returning to normal. He smiled and asked, "Miss, are you here to buy medicine, or to get it dispensed?"

Lin Qinghuan placed the black grass on the counter. The old man's eyes lit up. Black grass! This is a rare and good medicinal herb, and it is also a rare wild black grass.

"Young lady, are you trying to sell medicinal herbs?" Uncle Wu asked.

Lin Qinghuan smiled slightly. "Do you buy medicinal herbs here, old man?"

A glint of shrewdness flashed in Uncle Wu's eyes as he said, "My pharmacy has fixed suppliers. We only buy from rare medicinal herbs."

Lin Qinghuan picked up a black herb, a confident smile spreading across her face, and said eloquently, "Uncle, this herb of mine is a rare wild black herb. It has the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying. Especially now that the weather is hot, some people may experience heatstroke and abdominal pain. This black herb is a good medicine for treating heatstroke and abdominal pain. Moreover, black herb can also treat the flu, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and even skin diseases such as urticaria."

A surprised smile appeared on Uncle Wu's face as he asked curiously, "Does the young lady know medicine?"

"A little self-taught knowledge is not enough to be considered highbrow," Lin Qinghuan said.

Uncle Wu picked up the black grass on the counter. It looked good. He weighed it and it was exactly one and a half pounds.

"It's a total of one and a half pounds. I'll give you thirty yuan. Next time you find good herbs, you can bring them to me to sell. It's best to bring them after they've been processed, and I can give you a higher price."

Lin Qinghuan was overjoyed upon hearing this and quickly thanked him, saying, "Thank you, sir."

Thirty yuan is a huge sum of money for Lin Qinghuan now.

Lin Qinghuan took the vine ginseng out of her pocket and asked, "Do you accept this?"

"Teng Sanqi is worthless, only five cents a pound," Uncle Wu said.

Lin Qinghuan was stunned for a moment. It was only 50 cents a pound. It was so cheap. But the patch of Gynostemma pentaphyllum she saw today could yield two or three pounds. She could go and pick some to sell when she had nothing to do. Even a small amount of money is still money, and besides, Lin Qinghuan was still a poor man.

Uncle Wu handed the money to Lin Qinghuan. Lin Qinghuan took the money, put one yuan into her pants pocket, and put the rest of the money into a hidden pocket, which she carefully kept close to her body.

Lin Qinghuan looked at the book "Treatise on Febrile Diseases," a hint of shyness on her face, and shamelessly asked, "Uncle, may I take a look at the 'Treatise on Febrile Diseases'?"

“Yes, but you can only look at it inside the store,” Uncle Wu said generously.

Lin Qinghuan's face lit up with surprise, and she quickly thanked him, "Thank you, thank you, sir."

Lin Qinghuan carefully picked up the "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" and began to read it intently.

A tall, handsome young man, around twenty-five or twenty-six years old, walked in. When he saw Lin Qinghuan leaning against the counter reading a book, a hint of surprise flashed in his deep eyes.

"Uncle Wu, I've come to get the medicine," the young man said to Uncle Wu.

Uncle Wu handed the wrapped medicine to the young man and asked, "Qin Zhen, is your grandmother feeling any better?"

Qin Zhen took the medicine and said, "I feel much better."

After finishing reading the "Treatise on Febrile Diseases," Lin Qinghuan found it to be more insightful than the previous versions she had read. She closed her eyes and, after a moment, read it again.

Uncle Wu and Qin Zhen frowned as they watched Lin Qinghuan flip through the book so quickly. This wasn't reading; it was clearly just flipping through it for fun.

Lin Qinghuan read the book again before placing it on the counter and saying to Uncle Wu, "Uncle, I've finished reading the book. Thank you."

"Young lady, are you really sure you've finished reading?" Uncle Wu asked, frowning. He didn't like people who boasted.

“Uncle, my memory is good,” Lin Qinghuan said.

Lin Qinghuan has a good memory. Although she doesn't have a photographic memory, she can remember most of it after reading it twice. She will have to think about it some more when she gets back.

Uncle Wu asked incredulously, "You really finished reading it?"

Even with the best memory, it's impossible to see that fast. Uncle Wu still didn't believe what Lin Qinghuan said.

Seeing that Uncle Wu didn't believe her, Lin Qinghuan recited a passage casually, then said a few more words of thanks before leaving Renhetang.

Uncle Wu stared wide-eyed as Lin Qinghuan left, then said to Qin Zhen in shock, "That girl not only finished reading the book, but she also memorized it."

Qin Zhen saw Lin Qinghuan flipping through the book so quickly and assumed she was just casually flipping through it. He didn't expect Lin Qinghuan to be reading it seriously and even taking notes.

Uncle Wu looked at Qin Zhen, his eyes lighting up, and said, "Qin Zhen, if you marry a wife like that, your future children will definitely be smart. That girl looks young, she's probably not betrothed yet. Go and find out, and have your grandmother act as matchmaker."

Qin Zhen glanced at Uncle Wu expressionlessly, then picked up the medicine and left.
