Juan then smiled smugly and said, "That's true."
Juan got pregnant not long after Su Chen, and the villagers started gossiping about Su Chen after the comparison. Even the village chief asked Bai Ze if he should find her another partner.
Su Chen knew that the beastmen in the village were saying behind her back that she couldn't have children, but she really didn't know that this matter would alarm the village chief.
It wasn't until Bai Ze returned home in a gloomy mood that Su Chen finally understood the reason behind it.
"Does the village chief care whether or not someone has children?" That's strange.
Bai Ze nodded, his expression still not good. "The Lionheart Kingdom values offspring highly, so the descendants of everyone are a major issue."
Su Chen pinched his cheek. "Well, there's nothing I can do. I really can't have children. Why don't you find another partner?"
Bai Ze frowned, pulled her into his arms, and said fiercely, "You're saying things like that again."
Seeing that he was really angry, Su Chen quickly coaxed him, "Okay, okay, I was just joking. I won't say it again."
He added, "However... you are not from Lionheart Kingdom. Do you still remember your past?"
Bai Ze shook his head. "All I know is that I don't belong to the Water-Sky System. The place I used to live in seemed to have a very harsh environment, so harsh that there were no food molecules to eat."
"Eating molecules?!" Su Chen knew this was not an exaggeration. Even in her original world, it was recorded in history books that during famines, families would send their youngest children to other families because... they couldn't bear to eat their own.
People say that animals eat raw meat and drink blood, but when there's absolutely no food, humans cease to be human. Like the apocalypse she experienced, everyone fought tooth and nail for a meager amount of bread, and how many people risked becoming zombie dinner?
Thinking of this, Su Chen sighed.
Seeing Su Chen's changing expression, Bai Ze thought she was scared and quickly explained, "I didn't do that, don't be afraid."
Su Chen smiled and said, "I'm not afraid."
Bai Ze dared not look at her, and stammered, "But I've eaten... a corpse..."
"Okay, okay." Su Chen quickly covered his mouth. "It's not your fault. You had to live back then, so don't recall those bad memories."
"Okay." Bai Ze stared into her clear eyes and a smile appeared on his lips, but it was replaced by a worried expression after only a few seconds.
“But I feel like I wasn’t a good person before…” Sometimes, fragments of the past would flash through his mind, either of a knife slashing and blood splattering, or of someone cursing him with a pained expression.
Seeing his worried expression, Su Chen gently stroked the top of his head with her left hand, as if stroking his hair. "It's okay, it doesn't matter if you're a good person or a bad person, as long as you're always this good to me."
Bai Ze finally smiled, a hearty laugh, "I will always be this good to you."
Su Chen kept her hand on his head, which felt amazing! Hearing him say that, she nodded. No matter what happens in the future, she believed that Bai Ze was thinking and acting this way at least for now, and that was good enough.
It's like she'll eventually return to the modern world, and he might not even remember her then. But at least for now, they both have the confidence to trust each other.
Even so... Su Chen sometimes truly longed to be with him forever...
Su Chen gazed into Bai Ze's eyes, which seemed to sparkle like starlight, and kissed him.
