Su Chen shook her head. "No, it's just that I don't want to have children."
"You don't like children?" Jun Mochen frowned.
Su Chen didn't know how to answer, so she could only say, "It's alright."
The two of them remained silent.
Su Chen changed the subject, "Have you been very busy lately?"
Jun Mochen nodded. "The war situation has become increasingly tense recently."
Su Chen asked, "Do you need more silver?"
Jun Mochen raised an eyebrow. "What, you think you can persuade the Ning family to contribute some money?"
Su Chen shook her head, "I have some dowry, and a lot of jewelry that can be sold for some money."
Jun Mochen smiled, "Keep that little bit of silver for yourself. I heard that a lot of the jewelry was left to you by your mother."
"How did you know?" Su Chen asked in surprise. "You investigated me?"
Jun Mochen raised an eyebrow and said, "Of course I need to understand my own wife."
"How dare I call myself Your Majesty's wife?" Su Chen lowered her head.
Jun Mochen was not pleased to hear her respectful words.
"If I say you are empress, then so be it. Once the country is stable, I will make you empress."
Su Chen smiled and shook her head, "Your Majesty, I do not wish to be Empress."
"You mean you want me to marry another woman?" Jun Mochen's face darkened again.
"No," Su Chen quickly replied, "I am not suited for the palace. I only wish to be an ordinary woman, living a life of one love with my husband. Even just carrying water and weaving cloth every day would be fine." As she spoke, she expressed her longing.
Jun Mochen paused for a moment, then said, "Is that what you think?"
Su Chen nodded; that was indeed what she thought. A person doesn't need a life full of grand achievements; living a simple and peaceful life is a kind of happiness in itself.
“Back when the late emperor was alive, those old men in the court all said that I was not suitable to inherit the throne. On the contrary, they said that the Sixth Prince was benevolent, had military achievements, a great reputation, and was loved by the people. They said that if I were to ascend the throne, I would be a tyrant, and the people would suffer.” Jun Mochen seemed to be lost in memories. “Later, I killed their entire clan.”
Jun Mochen looked intently into Su Chen's eyes, his gaze unreadable. "Do you think I am heartless?"
Su Chen shook her head. This wasn't called heartlessness, it was called extremism. However, there were many ruthless emperors throughout history, and there were countless instances of founding emperors slaughtering their meritorious officials, even using extreme punishments to retaliate against ministers who opposed them.
Compared to those emperors, Jun Mochen's methods seem much more peaceful. However, he is certainly not a benevolent ruler.
"Then do you think I am suitable to be the monarch?" Jun Mochen's eyes made it impossible to see his true thoughts.
Su Chen shook her head. "I don't know. I'm not your subject, so how would I know if you're suitable to be a ruler?"
Su Chen added, "However..."
"But what?" Jun Mochen looked down at her.
Su Chen continued, "However, I believe that a qualified monarch is one who can lead the people to a good life. People should be able to eat their fill, dress warmly, do what they want and strive for it, and have the hope of attaining high positions. If the people can achieve this, then I believe the monarch of this country is qualified."
Jun Mochen smiled and shook his head after listening, "I've heard of what you're talking about, it's Peach Blossom Spring."
Su Chen smiled too; she had grown up in that kind of country after all.
"One day we will achieve it. Nothing will be perfect, but we should always strive to move towards perfection." Su Chen believes that all worlds will eventually move in this direction.
“You have some great ideas.” Jun Mochen leaned against the pillar beside the bed. “No one has ever told me these things before.”
