Chapter 36 Lu Lin, save me, save me! ...
Shen Rong hadn't expected Ma Langhua to be so reckless, committing violence in public. She instinctively protected her stomach and tried to dodge to the side, but suddenly an arm touched her lower back and gently pulled her away.
"What's going on?" Lu Lin's deep voice came from behind my ear, and I could tell that his tone was a little cold.
Ma Langhua felt a moment of annoyance, but the next moment she realized that the two siblings were liars and penniless swindlers.
Her gaze towards Lu Lin instantly turned disdainful, and she snorted coldly, "Keep an eye on your sister, I'm not someone to be trifled with."
Lu Lin's dark eyes made Ma Langhua's heart pound, but remembering that this was her uncle's territory, she straightened her back.
"If I'm not mistaken, it seems like you were the one who tried to hit my wife first."
"She stopped me first..." Ma Langhua's eyes widened, and she screamed in disbelief, "Madam?"
She pointed at Shen Rong, then at Lu Lin: "Didn't she call you brother?"
Lu Lin frowned: "Miss Ma, have you misunderstood something?" Could it be that she hasn't figured out the relationship between the two of them yet? He looked at Shen Rong.
Shen Rong was so engrossed in irritating others that she completely ignored Lu Lin's gaze.
"My sweetheart is still a brother, honey. You like me calling you that, don't you?"
Even the most shameless person would feel embarrassed thinking about what she had just said to Shen Rong.
She felt as if her face had been ripped off and trampled on, and even the gazes of those around her felt like mockery.
She was so angry she was incoherent: "Fine, you guys mess with me! Just you wait!" Then she flipped the table and ran away.
Ma Langhua often took this bus, and some of the bus attendants recognized her. They kindly reminded Shen Rong and the others, "I don't think you can afford to offend the people behind Miss Ma. You'd better be careful. If nothing else happens, I think you should leave here."
Shen Rong: "Is she really General Dou's niece?"
The boy nodded.
With such a niece, I'm afraid even Commander Dou won't be easy to get along with. Shen Rong looked at Lu Lin.
"It's alright," Lu Lin reassured her.
He carefully examined Da Mao's injury. Fortunately, it was just a superficial wound; some medicine would do the trick.
"I'm useless; I ruined my wife's side dish."
Following his gaze, Shen Rong noticed a broken jar in the corner, with chili sauce spilled out.
Shen Rong swallowed hard. She shouldn't have let her leave so easily. Wasn't her chili sauce worth more than her clothes? She should have tried to extort money from her no matter what.
"You still dare to talk? How can you be so bold?" Lu Lin stared at her coldly.
If he hadn't arrived quickly, and Ma Langhua had actually rushed over, she would have been in grave danger.
"Do you think I'm stupid? If she rushed at me, I would definitely dodge. It's your fault for not coming. You can't just watch Da Mao get bullied."
He turned the tables and made it his fault.
Da Mao: "Madam, it's alright, it doesn't hurt. It's much lighter than when my mother hit me."
Shen Rong chuckled.
Da Mao handed over the silver dollars in his hand: "I'm sorry, madam, I can't afford to pay back those silver dollars. Can you deduct them from my wages slowly?"
Shen Rong smiled and patted his head: "Alright, you got injured while doing something for me. I'll pay for it for you. Here are three silver dollars for your recovery. Take them."
Da Mao refused to accept it.
Finally, Lu Lin spoke up, and he dared not delay. It was obvious that he was afraid of Lu Lin.
After the person left, Shen Rong glared at him: "I told you to keep such a long face, you scared the kids."
Lu Lin ignored her.
Shen Rong asked again, "Where did you just go?"
If he hadn't sent Da Mao over, this wouldn't have happened.
"I ran into an acquaintance and chatted for a bit."
Shen Rong nodded.
"But is it really okay to offend Ma Langhua?"
Lu Lin finally looked at her, a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth: "Isn't it too late for you to worry about this now?"
Since she already knew the other person's identity, why did she choose to make such a scene? Wasn't that intentional?
Shen Rong laughed and said, "Oh dear, I thought she was lying."
It was definitely intentional; she wanted Lu Lin to offend someone. She didn't really want the 100,000 silver dollars right now; the person was much more important than the money. Anyone who tried to take Lu Lin from her was her enemy.
At noon, the train suddenly stopped halfway through the journey.
Shen Rong was curious; they hadn't arrived at their destination yet! Just as she was about to go out to check on things, Lu Lin locked the door from the inside.
Soon after, heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, and many people burst in.
With so many people, have we encountered bandits?
With a loud bang, the door to the private room was probably kicked open violently.
The noise was very loud, with people egging each other on and shouting curses. The commotion was so great that Shen Rong was terrified.
"robbery?"
It looks like they're arresting someone!
Lu Lin listened to the commotion outside with a sullen face.
"Lu Lin, Lu Lin, save me, save me!" The man screamed and struggled in the corridor.
Shen Rong looked at Lu Lin. "You know him?"
The man's voice in the corridor became softer, a muffled whimper, probably because his mouth was gagged.
Lu Lin's face darkened further. He subconsciously reached for a cigarette, but saw Shen Rong pick up a lighter and fiddle with it gently.
A dozen seconds later, there was a knock on the door.
Knock knock knock, polite and respectful.
"Director Lu, I am Han Xiwen, from the artillery regiment under the Marshal. I just heard that you are also on this train, so I came to pay my respects."
Shen Rong nervously grabbed Lu Lin's hand.
Lu Lin patted her hand twice to comfort her, then pulled out his gun from behind his back, released the safety, and gestured for Shen Rong to hide behind him before gently unlocking the door.
"Commander Han, I've long admired your name." Lu Lin opened the door a crack, but he could still see what was inside.
Han Xiwen saw that there was a woman behind him and slapped his forehead in annoyance: "Look at me, I made too much noise. Did I disturb your wife?"
Lu Lin smiled faintly and took Shen Rong's hand.
"She's a little timid."
Han Xiwen smiled, then turned and ordered the men around him to put away their guns.
Shen Rong secretly glanced at the corridor outside and saw at least a dozen people gathered there. A fat man wearing pajamas was tied up and had a smelly sock stuffed in his mouth.
He was very excited to see Lu Lin and struggled incessantly.
"What's this?" Lu Lin looked over there.
Han Xiwen said, "I caught a petty thief, and somehow he found out that Director Lu was also in the car. He wanted to get close to you. When he heard that you were in the car too, I thought I should at least say hello to you. From now on, we're family in Bincheng."
After saying that, he glared at his adjutant: "Is he dead? What if he startles the commander's distinguished guest? Take him down."
The adjutant turned to glare at the soldier, who then raised his rifle butt and struck the man on the head, knocking the fat man unconscious.
Shen Rong gasped in shock, terrified by the violent method. Lu Lin covered her eyes.
Han Xiwen shamelessly said, "We soldiers are used to being rough, and we've scared your wife again."
He turned around and scolded his men: "Don't you know to be gentle? You're all so clueless!"
"I have a personal grudge to settle with this petty thief. I'm so sorry to have kept you waiting. I'll take him off the bus right away."
Han Xiwen ordered his men to take the man away first, but his eyes were fixed on Lu Lin, testing his reaction, while his right hand remained on his waist as if in a defensive posture.
Lu Lin: "We won't delay Commander Han any longer."
This meant they weren't going to stop anyone, and Han Xiwen felt relieved, his smile becoming more genuine.
"The commander-in-chief is right. You, Lu Lin, are a true man. I, Han Xiwen, will remember this favor. I'll be going now. If I linger any longer, people will start cursing me behind my back. Tomorrow, the commander-in-chief will host a welcome dinner for you. I'll toast you a few times then."
Lu Linchao nodded to him, and Han Xiwen led his men away in a flurry.
Soon, the train started moving again. Through the window, Shen Rong saw Han Xiwen dragging the man, who looked like a dead dog, towards the woods behind the train.
"Don't you know that person?"
But that person seemed to know Lu Lin; their eyes lit up when they saw him.
Lu Lin helped her back to her room.
"I know him. I need to go to his room to check on him. Aren't you scared being here alone?"
After all that had just happened, how could Shen Rong not be afraid?
"I'll go with you."
Shen Rong found it strange. If she knew him, why did she act like she didn't and not even say a word to him?
Lu Lin explained, "The man who was arrested is called Deng Weiwang. I've only met him a few times and we're not close. He was a staff member of the former prime minister and once plotted to kill Han Xiwen's father."
Shen Rong was surprised and covered his mouth. If he had fallen into Han Xiwen's hands, wouldn't he be doomed?
"Han Xiwen dared to hijack the car halfway, which means he must have had tacit approval. I'm afraid this is also a test of me."
It's not surprising that Deng Weiwang had seen him on the train, but it's very unusual that Han Xiwen deliberately made him shout.
Thinking back to when Han Xiwen just introduced himself.
Shen Rong understood: "It seems that Commander Dou doesn't trust you that much either."
They started testing the waters even before entering Bincheng.
Lu Lin searched Deng Weiwang's room but found nothing; the valuables in the box were all there.
"Comrade, being an official isn't easy!" Shen Rong comforted him.
Lu Lin pulled her hand off his shoulder expressionlessly.
"Let's go back."
Back in the room, Shen Rong asked him, "What did you see?"
Lu Lin glanced at her. "Not scared now?"
Shen Rong pursed her lips. Of course she was scared. Who wouldn't be scared if a group of people pointed guns at them?
"He just arrested him like that, isn't he afraid someone will call the police?" Shen Rong asked.
A hint of sarcasm flashed across Lu Lin's lips: "Isn't that just a policeman?"
Shen Rong choked for a moment.
"Just pretend nothing happened today, and that you know nothing about it."
She knew exactly what to do without him having to tell her.
"Are all soldiers this lawless? What will Han Xiwen do to him?"
Lu Lin reminded her, "Watch your words. Commander Dou comes from a bandit background and hates it when people say he is lawless. He also doesn't like people saying that his soldiers are like bandits."
As for Deng Weiwang, the hatred for killing his father is irreconcilable.
Shen Rong still didn't quite understand why Deng Weiwang would come to someone else's territory if he knew that Deng Weiwang had a grudge against him.
Lu Lin glanced at her. What was she doing? Naturally, she was looking for a way to make a living and advance her career.
Unfortunately, in General Dou's eyes, he had long been useless and a piece of trash, but could still be used to win over the hearts of young people.
So what he thought was a path to survival was actually the road to the underworld.
Seeing that Shen Rong was still a little scared, Lu Lin kindly reassured her, "Don't worry, no one will come to arrest you for no reason."
Shen Rong looked at him and suddenly asked, "Lu Lin, is it this chaotic outside?"
Lu Lin paused for a moment, then replied "Yes".
"Things will get better someday." It was hard to tell whether his words were meant to comfort himself or to soothe his nerves.
Shen Rong gave a bitter smile, but this day would not come for more than twenty years.
"The situation here in Bincheng is relatively stable, just as prosperous as in Pingcheng. When I have some free time, I can take you out for a stroll." Lu Lin thought she was worried that she wouldn't be used to it.
Shen Rong shook his head.
The inner voice thought: No, it's not comforting at all; it was the first to be caught in the flames of war.
“Many people are eyeing this piece of fat meat,” she muttered to herself.
Lu Lin glanced at her.
