Chapter 14 Power Outage

Suburban areas outside the city.

This is the lifeblood of the city, with towering transmission towers stretching into the distance. Several high-voltage transmission cables are suspended in mid-air from the towers, and it is through these lines that the current from the substation is continuously transmitted into the city.

The pickup truck stopped about twenty meters away from the tower, which was the maximum distance at which accuracy could be guaranteed.

A man in a black bodysuit and a black hood stepped down from the passenger seat. He slowly walked to the side of the pickup truck, stepped on the wheel, and with a push, climbed onto the bed. With a clatter, he opened the army-green awning covering it, revealing a metal box and a strange suit of clothing underneath.

The reason why it was strange was that this dress did not have any purpose of blocking vision. This dress was made of fine iron wire, like a piece of chain mail, but it was a little different from ordinary chain mail.

While ordinary chain mail only covers the upper body, this piece of clothing is one-piece. The soles of the feet and the trouser legs are one piece, and the lower and upper parts are also connected, with only an opening at the chest.

The person who was originally sitting in the main driver's seat also got out. Judging from her figure, she was a woman.

She got on the truck bed from the back, holding a red flashlight in her mouth. Turning on the light, she helped the man fasten the buckles on his chest one by one, then checked them carefully again.

"Okay, now put this on." She patted the man's chest and put on an oval-shaped spherical helmet made of several iron rods. The bottom of the helmet was hung on the iron wire on the shoulder of the clothes, forming a whole.

Judging from the design alone, this bizarre outfit clearly offers no protection against attack. The wire suit might be able to withstand a couple of dagger strikes, but the helmet, constructed from several bent metal rods, is not only fragile, but the gaps between the rods are wide enough to squeeze an adult's fist. Using it to block attacks is sheer wishful thinking, but it doesn't appear these two intend to use it to defend against human attack.

After doing all this, the man opened the rectangular metal box, which contained a bazooka and two rockets.

He loaded a rocket, put the rocket launcher on his shoulder and said to the woman, "Go back."

"Aiming point."

The woman looked at him deeply, left these words, turned back to the driver's seat, and slammed the door shut.

The man chuckled but didn't answer. He focused on aiming, but not at the tower itself. He knew it was impossible to destroy the tower with the power of these two rocket launchers, so his target was actually the insulating ceramics halfway up the tower, which held the high-voltage wires.

Pulling the trigger, the rocket launched with a thick plume of exhaust, striking accurately against a string of ceramics. The violent explosion shattered the ceramics into smithereens, but after losing the string, the cable didn't break. Instead, it dangled from the air, suspended just a few meters above the ground by the pull of the other two towers.

The man loaded the second cannon.

The rocket hit the hanging cable accurately, the aluminum cable was broken, and the broken end fell to the ground. The powerful electric current formed a dangerous step electric field within a distance of dozens of meters centered on the landing point.

If a person walks within this range, current will flow through both legs due to the unequal voltage between the two legs. This situation is often fatal. The huge current flowing into the body can cause permanent damage to the body in an instant.

The pickup truck is within the range of the step electric field.

This is why the man put on that strange suit in advance. This metal-woven suit formed a Faraday cage on his body surface, and the current would flow through the metal clothes with the lowest voltage and would not enter the human body.

As for the woman in the driver's seat, the car itself is a huge Faraday cage. As long as she doesn't open the door or reach out of the window to touch the outer body of the car, she is absolutely safe.

"Let's go." The man patted the iron sheet on the front of the car and signaled the woman to drive.

There is a power outage.

The cable destroyed by the man was responsible for 80% of the electricity supply to the Xinjianuo District where the United Nations Building is located. Within ten seconds of the cable being destroyed, the entire city fell into darkness.

Electricity, communications, transportation...all sectors closely related to modern civilization began to stop operating one by one.

Three minutes later, some sporadic lights began to light up, as the backup power supplies in some key areas started to operate automatically, but other areas were still pitch dark.

In the darkness, a convoy of cars was quietly driving down the street. No one turned on their lights, and all the cars in the convoy were painted matte black.

Leading the way was a jeep driven by a middle-aged man who had memorized every street in the area after two months of scouting the area.

The darkness did not affect the convoy's speed at all, and it even moved a little faster with the help of night vision goggles.

The jeep took the lead, turning right at an intersection. The tanker truck in the middle followed closely behind, as if by telepathy. Behind the tanker truck was a passenger bus. The windows of the bus, except for the driver's cab, were curtained from the inside, making it impossible to see inside from the outside.

The convoy drove into an alley. There were originally two security guards at the other end of the alley, but just a few minutes ago, a man in a power company uniform attracted the attention of the two from the front, and then several other accomplices launched a sneak attack from behind.

Now the security guard's body is lying in a trash can on the roadside.

After exiting the alley and turning right, the main entrance of the United Building is less than 300 meters away. At this time, the leading vehicle in the convoy has been replaced by a tanker truck.

After completing the right turn, the driver of the tanker truck immediately stepped on the accelerator to the bottom. The speed of the car increased to 80 kilometers in just over ten seconds and continued to accelerate.

The huge roar of the engine finally attracted the attention of the security team, but this team of security guards was not equipped with night vision goggles and could only use the flashlights in their hands to shine in the direction of the engine sound. By the time they could see the tanker truck covered with matte paint, the car was only a few dozen meters away from them.

Then, he turned on the headlights.

The modified light tower emitted tens of thousands of lumens of blinding light, like a flashbang, instantly blinding people. The security guards were blinded by the sudden brightness and subconsciously closed their eyes, even stopping their attempts to evade the oncoming vehicle.

In that instant, the tanker truck roared through the middle of the security team and then crashed into the gate in front of the building without losing momentum. The poor gate only blocked the car for a moment before half of the door was forcibly torn off the wall.
