"This way." The man walked up the stairs to the floor the officials had just left, then walked through the long corridor and into the fire escape at the other corner of the building. Although he walked hurriedly, he showed no caution. Even when turning the corner, he didn't hesitate, not even checking to see if there was anyone on the other side, as if everything was under control.
When passing by a window, Liu Shasha saw the radio headset on the other person's ear, and at this moment she completely confirmed her inner speculation.
There is a mole in the United Nations!
These insiders must have ambushed the evacuation route in advance and then transmitted the crowd flow information to these people in real time via radio. This was the only way to explain why every time Liu Shasha didn't hear the sound, the man would have already foreseen and stopped in advance to avoid the person coming from the front.
Going downstairs, I don’t know who could have contacted the hospital in this situation. Several ambulances with flashing lights were parked in the yard. Most of the crowd gathered around the ambulances. Some of them were busy carrying the seriously injured onto the cars, while more were taking care of the lightly injured. So no one noticed that Liu Shasha and the others walked out of the stairwell, chose a direction away from the crowd, and quickly disappeared behind a grove of green trees.
After leaving the yard and walking back along the path the tanker had taken, I found the bus that had been following the tanker at the entrance of the alley. It had already turned around and was still running.
The leading man got on the bus, and Liu Shasha was pushed in right behind him. The bus started to return in the direction it had come from, but stopped just as it came out of the other end of the alley.
They will transfer to other means of transportation here.
No one else in the car moved, only the leading man escorted Liu Shasha out of the car. A black jeep drove up from the shadows on the roadside and stopped steadily beside the two of them, the back door opened from the inside.
The man gestured with a gun to get Liu Shasha into the car. As soon as she stepped into the car, she felt someone tug at her arm, pulling her whole body inside, and then a black cloth bag was put over her head from top to bottom.
Then the man got in, and he squeezed in to signal Liu Shasha to move to the left. Liu Shasha carefully moved to the side in the dark, her arm pressed against the person who was already in the car.
The person was not wearing an electrician's uniform, but a short-sleeved shirt with smooth skin. Liu Shasha guessed that it must be a woman.
Then, Liu Shasha heard the sound of a door closing. Then the car began to accelerate.
"I almost forgot about this." The woman sitting in the seat on the left suddenly said.
Liu Shasha felt a hand caressing her face, and then the lower part of the bag was lifted. The green fluorescent light from the dashboard in the front cab allowed her to see the hands holding a black object approaching her face. Her mouth was sealed with tape by the woman, and her vision returned to darkness.
No one spoke after that. The two men sandwiched her, one on each side, and only the repetitive hum of the engine echoed in her ears.
Because her vision was deprived, Liu Shasha had long lost awareness of how much time had passed, and she spent most of the time in the car half asleep and half awake.
Suddenly the car began to shake. Liu Shasha was awakened from her hazy state. She felt a beam of light shining on her head. Even though her head was still covered, she could only see some hazy spots of light.
The light wasn't very bright, flickering, but its angle remained constant until the car turned a corner and the light disappeared.
This news cheered Liu Shasha up. She knew it was daybreak. The light that had hit her face just now was sunlight streaming in through the car window, its brightness flickering because of the scenery outside. She guessed she must have left the city, as the jeep was clearly not on the road. The car was constantly bumping along the bumpy road, and the speed was noticeably slower.
The population density of the United States is not high. Aside from a few major cities, a significant portion of the population is scattered across the vast countryside. However, people living in the countryside do spontaneously gather into communities. Furthermore, the empty areas between these communities are largely uninhabited, with only occasional travelers passing through them.
Thinking of this, Liu Shasha's heart sank. In a place like this, it would take the local police a very long time to find her.
The environment darkened noticeably, and even through the glass, a whirring echo could be heard. The jeep drove into an abandoned tunnel and stopped inside.
Liu Shasha's hood was finally taken off and the tape on her mouth was removed. She staggered out of the car, moving her stiff limbs while looking around.
The tunnel had been abandoned for over a decade. The walls had begun to seep due to lack of maintenance, and a significant number of the lights on either side of the tunnel's ceiling had ceased to function. The few remaining ones cast a dim light, which, reflected off the tunnel walls, barely allowed for a clear view of the surroundings. The ground was covered in a thick layer of dust, but it bore the marks of heavy objects dragged across it. These marks were fresh, indicating recent human activity.
Just as Liu Shasha was observing her surroundings, an iron door on the side wall opened. Behind the door was a space that could accommodate more than a dozen people. It was equipped with ventilation shafts and escape passages. There was one such space every hundred meters or so in the tunnel.
Two people walked out from behind the door. The one in front was holding a flashlight. The flashlight light shone directly on Liu Shasha's face, making her subconsciously raise her hand to block the light.
The man who brought her here immediately grabbed her wrists from behind and forcibly locked her hands behind her back, so Liu Shasha had to turn her head away and close her eyes. The beam of light from the flashlight swept up and down her body, as if to confirm her identity.
When her eyes began to gradually adjust to the light, Liu Shasha finally saw the identity of the person who came.
At first, she felt that the man looked familiar, but after thinking for a long time, she couldn't figure out who it was. Until the man walked in front of her, the man who was not much taller than Liu Shasha stretched out his left hand towards her and rolled up the sleeves of his long gown.
Liu Shasha looked at the other person in shock, her mind was blank, and she felt as if she was in an absurd dream.
"It seems you still remember me." The man, or boy, raised his lips in a playful smile.
"You saved my life back then, my dear sister Shasha."
