Under Bai Yi's astonished gaze, the rebounding destructive ray hit the new Mars planetary fortress spacecraft hard.
This single shot overloaded the remaining planetary shields, shattering the charged armor that was hit head-on. Fortunately, the crystal ship couldn't actually reflect all the energy back, so the fortress wasn't completely crippled.
But even so, this round of rebound was like the last pole that broke the camel's back. A series of chain reactions caused great damage to the new Mars.
The launch unit of the destruction ray was paralyzed by this attack.
At the same time, all the steering engines and railguns in the hemisphere facing the attack direction almost completely stopped functioning, and those air defense positions that lacked armor protection were completely destroyed. This attack also rushed into the drone hangars and missile silos.
The ammunition stored there detonated, and a series of explosions of varying sizes occurred one after another on the surface of the planet.
The impact caused a global starquake, which caused one of the propulsion engines to malfunction. For safety reasons, Bai Yi had to shut down the corresponding engine as well.
This caused the fortress ship to lose most of its maneuverability.
"Everyone, please be prepared for consciousness uploading."
In the shelter of the planetary bunker, Bai Yi's holographic projection appeared in front of the refugees. He led the group to a small compartment in the shelter and pointed at the machine inside and said to them.
"This is a brain scanner. It can scan your brain data and save it to memory. When needed, it can download this consciousness back into a new body."
"Why do you do this?" one of them asked.
"The situation is very dangerous now."
Bai Yi did not hide anything and directly explained the current situation to everyone.
"The enemy still has four battle stars that maintain considerable combat power. The fall of the New Mars is only a matter of time. After this, I cannot guarantee your safety."
"So, before everything happens, I give you one last chance to choose."
Bai Yi scanned everyone's faces and saw that they still had confused expressions, so he sighed and continued to explain.
"Don't you understand? This opportunity is for you to scan your brain consciousness and upload it into chips, and then these chips will be placed in the escape pod. After that, the fortress ship will try to break out and release the escape pod in the safest possible place."
"The crystal storm has blocked all warp travel in this area, but the blockade isn't infinite. As long as you fly far enough via conventional navigation, you can escape the warp restrictions."
"Are we going to desert?" asked another.
Bai Yi looked at him. The man was wearing a police uniform, but he had a military aura all over his body.
"I'm not asking you to desert. This is just to avoid unnecessary sacrifice. When the time comes, the planetary fortress spacecraft will be set to automatic mode, and my chip will be evacuated with you."
The crowd fell silent.
Seeing this, Dr. Max was the first to stand up.
He was the first to sit in the brain scanner chair and put the metal hood on his forehead.
"I have one last question," he asked suddenly.
"As far as I know, the Galactic Federation does not understand the nature of consciousness, which means..."
He didn't say anything more, but everyone understood what he meant.
However, Bai Yi helped him fill in the remaining content.
"That is, the consciousness within the chip is merely a replica of your own will. Although to outsiders, the consciousness within it is indistinguishable from your original self, sharing the same personality, hobbies, and even the exact same tone of voice. But to you, the original self, it is still just a replica."
"We still have to stay here and wait to die!" another person exclaimed.
In response, Bai Yi simply said coldly: "You have no other choice."
"I refuse!" A young man stood up. There was no fear on his face, but there was a hint of disgust.
"I joined the army just to die on the battlefield one day. I don't want to be kept as a Tamagotchi after I die, and I don't want an imposter to continue living under my identity after I die."
"Young man, don't be so pessimistic." Max chuckled. "Why be so extreme? What seems like a big deal now will seem like a small matter in a few years. I'm still doing well in my old age."
But the young man just shook his head.
"You are free to do what you want, but I will keep my soul pure."
Bai Yi didn't care about this.
"what ever."
Then he looked at the rest of the people.
"What about you? This is your own freedom. I won't force you."
"I have a question."
It was Ainol who spoke.
“You can all upload, so what should I do?”
"Feel sorry."
Bai Yi scratched his head awkwardly.
"I didn't expect you to be so brainless. I'll find a high-pressure gas cylinder to hold you when the time comes."
Everyone then looked at her with envy. After all, everyone could only upload a copy, but Enol was the real one.
After a few minutes, several more people dropped out of the group, and the remaining people lined up to begin their brain scans.
Bai Yi counted them; most of them were elderly. These elders were experts in various fields, their heads brimming with knowledge. Bai Yi didn't know if their actions were driven by a simple urge to survive or a sense of responsibility to galactic civilization. But Bai Yi didn't question it. Regardless of their motivation, they had made the right choice.
