There is a 7-hour time difference between China and France. When Wei Changfeng is resting, it is often daytime for Lin Xiao, while it is midnight for Wei Changfeng after Lin Xiao finishes class.
Nevertheless, the two still kept in touch via their phones. Lin Xiao's schedule was relatively fixed, while Wei Changfeng's was different. Depending on the scene, he would sometimes shoot for ten or even twenty hours straight, and occasionally he would have a half-day or a full day off.
So they often leave each other messages, waiting for the other to listen when they have time.
They talk about everything, from finding a good little restaurant to work and study plans.
Wei Changfeng told Lin Xiao that he had signed a new endorsement deal in Beijing with a very high fee.
His previous savings were enough to buy a house in Beijing, but having too much money is useless because the review process in Beijing is very strict; if you don't have five years of social security contributions, you're not eligible to buy a house.
Fortunately, he will be eligible to buy a house this summer, and he plans to buy one in Beijing then.
He asked Lin Xiao what kind of house she liked. This topic was too sensitive, so Lin Xiao simply replied, "Choose one that suits your taste. It's your own house."
Although it was to avoid Wei Changfeng's question, Lin Xiao really didn't have much experience in buying a house, so he couldn't offer any valuable advice.
Her family lives in a villa, and her father said he would give her one when she and her sister get married. If she hadn't broken up with Feng Jinglin, the Feng family would have had more than one luxury residence, so she hadn't worried about such things for a single day.
Lin Xiao's answer was clearly an attempt to distance himself from the relationship between the two. Another failed attempt to probe, but Wei Changfeng seemed used to it and didn't seem to care.
Lin Xiao asked him, "You've been out of school for six or seven years, so why are you only now eligible to buy a house?"
Wei Changfeng said that when he was young and had just graduated, he didn't know anything. He first signed with a small company that didn't provide them with proper social security benefits. It wasn't until he signed with this company that everything about his work became more formal.
"However, I'm still not entirely at ease about this new endorsement," he told Lin Xiao.
"Why?" Lin Xiao asked, puzzled.
"I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just feels like the partners aren't very reliable. The newly established company is still in the startup phase, and the product has just been developed, yet they're spending huge sums of money to hire celebrities as spokespeople. And it's the kind of fast-moving consumer goods with low profit margins, so it feels like they're putting the cart before the horse."
As he spoke, he suddenly seemed to remember something and added, "But my boss said that Hui and I are just idle. We're complete novices in business, yet we're worrying about when the other party can earn back their endorsement fees. Haha."
Lin Xiao smiled and said to him, "I don't know much about business, but I have a friend who studies at HEC Paris, the best business school in Europe, and his family owns a large company. If you're worried, I can tell him about it and let him analyze it."
Wei Changfeng said, "No need for all that trouble. The contract is already signed. I'm just reminding you. There's no reason for a spokesperson to worry about product sales and profits."
However, the next time Lin Xiao saw Yang Xile, he still briefly consulted him about this matter.
She didn't go into details, nor did she reveal Wei Changfeng's name. She simply asked Yang Xile, "How should a newly established fast-moving consumer goods company promote its products and capture the market? Is it feasible to spend huge sums on advertising?"
"This requires specific analysis of each case. We need to consider many actual circumstances before making a judgment, especially the nature of the product and the company's overall strategy. We cannot generalize."
When discussing business matters, Yang Xile often displays a maturity and composure beyond his actual age.
Lin Xiao didn't actually know the specifics; Wei Changfeng hadn't told her, so she couldn't answer Yang Xile's question.
Yang Xile continued, "Although there are general business logics to follow, sometimes taking an unconventional approach can be the key to success. If it's a completely unknown new product, hiring a celebrity to endorse it can be a good strategy to quickly gain brand awareness and capture the market. Of course, this is only possible if the company has enough financial resources to support all subsequent business operations; otherwise, all previous efforts will be in vain."
Lin Xiao looked at Yang Xile and asked, "Do you often discuss the analysis of business cases in your classes?"
Yang Xile laughed and said, "Not only do we talk about it often, but we also form teams to debate with each other. Sister, the business world is different from what outsiders imagine. Sometimes, all sorts of tricks can be used in this field. There aren't that many noble things. More often, it's despicable and shady. So, when you said your father didn't want you to inherit the family business, maybe it's because he thinks you're too naive and is afraid you won't be able to handle all this, and he's worried that you'll have to work hard in the future."
Lin Xiao had never considered this perspective before, because she felt that her father favored her stepmother's younger sister, so naturally he would also favor her in terms of inheritance rights. She never thought that her father might not want her to live in the cutthroat world of business every day.
Hearing Yang Xile's words, Lin Xiao remained silent for a while. Seeing that she suddenly stopped talking, Yang Xile asked anxiously, "Sister, did I say something that made you unhappy? Don't be angry."
He thought that mentioning Lin Xiao's possible lack of inheritance rights to the Lin family business had touched a nerve with Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao looked at him, smiled and shook her head: "No, don't overthink it. I just think what you said makes sense, and I never thought of it before. I was even secretly resenting my dad for favoring one person over the other."
Seeing that Lin Xiao wasn't angry, Yang Xile breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Sister, if your friend who's starting a business has any business problems, he can come to me. If he's interested in us, I'll offer free consultations. Of course, if the advice I give is wrong and causes him to lose money, just don't blame me."
