The director had a serious talk with Wei Changfeng, but couldn't get the real reason behind his state. Wei Changfeng didn't want to talk about it; he felt it was too shameful for a grown man to contemplate suicide over a breakup. Even knowing it was shameful, he simply couldn't control his emotions during that period, and sometimes even his physical actions.
Unable to get the real reason behind it, the director had no choice but to give him a stern warning.
He told Wei Changfeng that he, the screenwriter, and the entire team chose him for the lead role because they admired, trusted, and valued him. Regardless of his personal nightmares, if he were to have an accident on set, it would become a nightmare for everyone in the crew, a nightmare they would never escape, a nightmare they would likely recall every time they filmed. Did he want to force everyone to change careers? Did he want to become the nightmare of a group of people who trusted and loved him?
Upon hearing this, Wei Changfeng seemed to understand something in a daze, and the thick fog in front of him began to slowly dissipate. For the next three months, he was able to perform normally on set.
He hadn't mentioned this experience to anyone. Xiao Hao, who was by his side, could probably sense some of it, but didn't know the full story of his emotional journey. After returning to Beijing, he also forbade Xiao Hao from mentioning it to Zhao Hui, for fear of worrying him.
Yang Xile didn't know these behind-the-scenes stories, but based on Wei Changfeng's angry accusation alone, he could roughly sense that his actions had caused Wei Changfeng no less pain than they had caused Lin Xiao.
He witnessed Lin Xiao's pain and hardship every moment, so he finally couldn't bear it and decided to let go. As for Wei Changfeng's pain, apart from that moment when he stood like a statue in the rain, he was completely unaware of the rest.
Yang Xile didn't retaliate or move, letting Wei Changfeng punch him three times until his mouth and nose bled. He wiped the blood away and said nonchalantly, "I'm not going to hold it against you for Lin Xiao's sake. If someone else had hit me like that, they might be lying dead in the street tomorrow."
Because he had already introduced himself at the beginning, and Wei Changfeng had long experienced the wealth and arrogance of Xiangyu Group, he knew that what Yang Xile said was true, not just bragging after being beaten; he could really do it.
But Wei Changfeng was no longer afraid; there was nothing in this world that he feared anymore. From now on, all he had to do was to protect those around him with all his might, ensuring they would never be harmed again.
After listening to Wei Changfeng's entire story, Lin Xiao was overwhelmed with mixed feelings. Did she hate Yang Xile for keeping her by his side and restricting her freedom? Perhaps she had hated him at one point, but she had stopped hating him later. After all, he had genuinely saved her father and ultimately set her free, thus freeing himself as well. However, he had indeed caused both her and Wei Changfeng excruciating pain. Fortunately, they had both overcome it.
After talking for a long time, it was already dark outside. Wei Changfeng got up to cook something delicious for Lin Xiao, afraid that she would be hungry.
"You can cook now? I remember you couldn't cook anything before, even instant noodles were cooked for you by Xiao Hao."
“People change, you know. I want to be a good husband in the future, share housework with my wife, and cooking is definitely one of the most important things,” Wei Changfeng said with a gentle smile.
He kept his word and indeed used the ingredients on the table to make a very decent meal.
The two finished their meal together, leaning on each other. Wei Changfeng then solemnly placed the new ring on Lin Xiao's finger. Lin Xiao said, "The diamond on this ring is too big and too conspicuous. It's easy to lose. The old one was just fine, and I've kept it."
Wei Changfeng recalled the scene Yang Xile had described to him: Lin Xiao acting like a madwoman, throwing down her umbrella in the pouring rain, plunging half her body into a trash can in her slippers, searching for the ring he had thrown away. He felt both heartache and guilt for the harm his words and actions that day had caused her.
Before the tears could well up, he cupped Lin Xiao's face in his hands and kissed her bright red lips deeply.
