French universities are quite different from those in China, especially some colleges. Even prestigious fashion design schools like ESMOD, renowned throughout Europe, don't have a large campus; they only have a few buildings. So, the so-called school gate is simply the area facing the street near the building's main entrance.
When Yang Xile came to see Lin Xiao last time, he parked his car there, and all the students coming and going saw it. The French guy fell in love with Yang Xile's sports car at first sight and was also very impressed with him.
Yang Xile replied in French that he was indeed the guy, and that he wanted to end the conversation as soon as possible because he was in a hurry to find Lin Xiao. Unexpectedly, the French guy didn't let him leave, but instead asked, "Are you here to see your Chinese classmate Lin? She's not here; she didn't come to school."
Yang Xile was stunned when he heard this. He confirmed with the deliveryman several times, and the deliveryman said that he saw Lin Xiao get into his car that day, so he knew they were friends. Lin Xiao happened to be in the same class as him, but hadn't come to class for three days.
"What?! Why hasn't she come to class for three days? Where is she? Has the school called the police?!" Yang Xile was immediately alarmed, because given Lin Xiao's personality, it was impossible for her to skip class for so long without a reason.
He hadn't been to class for three days. Was he at home alone or had something happen to him outside? In an instant, countless terrible things came to mind, and he couldn't bear any of them happening to Lin Xiao.
Seeing that he was about to go crazy, the French guy quickly explained, "Don't worry, buddy, someone asked the teacher why Lin was not allowed to attend the critique class. The teacher said she had an emergency at home and had to take leave to go back to her country."
Yang Xile tried to calm herself down and asked the deliveryman, "Did you have to take leave and go back to China because of a family emergency? When did that happen?"
The young man shrugged and said, "I don't know the specifics, but I haven't been to class for three days. So I must have taken leave three days ago?"
Yang Xile frantically left messages and made phone calls to Lin Xiao's phone and WeChat, but still no one answered. Fearing something had gone wrong, he grabbed the Frenchman and wouldn't let him leave, insisting that the man take him to see Lin Xiao's teacher.
The French guy originally came over to say hello because he liked his jogging style, but unexpectedly he was suddenly conscripted to take him to find his teacher.
The French teachers weren't very reliable either; the two teachers who taught Lin Xiao's class both said they didn't know anything about it.
Yang Xile wouldn't give up until he got definite news about Lin Xiao. He told the deliveryman, "Take me to all the teachers in your school who teach this class, and find out the details about my friend. You can drive my car for free for a few days!"
"What?!" This time it was the French guy's turn to be overjoyed. He was afraid he had misheard, so he checked with Yang Xile again, and then took him all over the campus to find all the teachers of the class.
After a long and arduous search, they finally found the teacher who approved Lin Xiao's leave of absence, who was also one of the main teachers of this class—Ms. Deneuve.
She liked Lin Xiao very much, and when she saw Lin Xiao's friend coming over so anxiously to ask about her situation, she couldn't help but feel a little nervous.
She told Yang Xile that Lin Xiao had called her late at night four days ago to ask for leave. He sounded very anxious, saying that there was an emergency at home and he needed to return to China immediately. Considering that there were only three days left of the critique session, and seeing how anxious she was, Ms. Deneuve immediately approved her leave request.
Yang Xile asked what exactly happened, but Ms. Deneuve said she knew nothing about it. Lin Xiao, usually so calm and composed, was acting very strangely that day; something serious must have happened at home, probably someone had fallen seriously ill. However, given her position as a teacher and the French tendency to avoid prying into others' privacy, she didn't ask further.
After saying goodbye to Ms. Deneuve, Yang Xile called Yu Qingning to ask if she knew about Lin Xiao's return to China and whether Lin Xiao had said anything to her.
