Chapter 23 Nanshan to the south, Beihai to the north

Zhao Hui asked Lin Xiao whether he would return to China or stay abroad to develop his career after studying in France.

Lin Xiao said she didn't plan that far ahead; life is about taking things one step at a time, and sometimes planning too much is meaningless.

What she didn't say was that she had planned her entire life out: after graduating from university, she would work in a design company for a few years, and when the time was right, she would start her own business.

With her father's support, even if she couldn't make the business very big, at least she wouldn't have to worry like other entrepreneurs who might lose everything and have their survival threatened if their business failed.

During this time, she waited patiently for Feng Jinglin's marriage proposal, until he felt confident enough to build a new family with her and enter a new stage of life.

Jinglin has a good family background and a good level of education. His abilities, while not comparable to his famous grandfather, are no less than those of any of his peers.

Lin Xiao, too, developed a very independent personality from a young age and never caused his parents any worry about his studies. With two people like this embarking on a new journey in life hand in hand, what is there to worry about?

Get married at the right age, have a baby when you are mentally mature, and then live a peaceful and happy life as a family of three or several people until the years pass and you grow old.

Lin Xiao has never had any ambition, but he has never worried about the future either.

This certainty may stem partly from her unassuming nature, which prevents her from being overly concerned with a luxurious lifestyle.

On the other hand, they also have confidence in themselves and Feng Jinglin deep down: the two of them will not live a worse life than anyone else.

Later, all of this confidence and trust was shattered one by one, and she realized that there may be nothing eternal in this world, and even more so, many things may not make any sense.

She didn't consider herself a greedy person, yet she ended up having even her smallest wish thwarted.

Lin Haitao told her a month in advance that Feng Jinglin was going to get engaged to her sister Lin Xue.

Feng Jinglin sent her a message a week before their engagement party, apologizing.

As for her stepmother and sister, it was as if the whole thing had nothing to do with her. They were enthusiastically preparing for the engagement ceremony while going in and out of the house, and casually telling her not to be absent because many old friends and acquaintances would be there that day.

As memories of the past flooded his mind, Lin Xiao got up and poured himself a third glass of wine.

Seeing that she was starting to walk unsteadily, Wei Changfeng deliberately exaggerated and said, "Save some of this delicious red wine for us, don't drink it all by yourself."

Lin Xiao returned with a glass of red wine, sat on the carpet in front of the fireplace, and chuckled at him.

The orange-red firelight made her originally snow-white face turn orange-red. Although there was a big smile on her lips, her eyes were full of sorrow.

For some reason, Wei Changfeng felt a pang of sadness when he saw that look in her eyes.

To lighten the mood, he volunteered, "Hey, I'll perform a short a cappella piece for you all. It's a song I'll be singing on this year's Beijing TV Spring Festival Gala, and you'll be the first audience members."

Xiao Min led the cheers, and Xiao Hao and Zhao Hui joined in, creating a lively atmosphere.

Wei Changfeng put down his wine glass, cleared his throat, and began to sing.

This wasn't the first time Lin Xiao had heard him sing up close. Several years ago, Wei Changfeng had been invited to sing two songs at her best friend's birthday party.

But this is the first time I've heard a cappella singing.

Wei Changfeng's voice is very pure, with a mellow bass and a clear treble, so he sings very beautifully even without any musical accompaniment.

"Wow, that's great!" Xiaomin clapped her hands with joy after he finished singing.

"Brother, you could debut as a singer even if you weren't an actor!" Xiao Hao was also proud of his brother.

Wei Changfeng scratched his head a little embarrassedly, then turned to Lin Xiao and asked, "How would you rate it?"

Lin Xiao was already a little tipsy, and said with a grin, "Ten points! No, one hundred points!"

Wei Changfeng was overjoyed, his narrow eyes curving into slits: "How many points is it exactly? Ten points and one hundred points are ten times different!"

"It means a perfect score!" Xiaomin explained for Lin Xiao.

“Yes, yes,” Lin Xiao nodded vigorously, adding, “It should get a thousand points! Because I earned a million!”

"What do you mean?" Zhao Hui and Wei Changfeng asked at the same time.

Lin Xiao leaned back on the sofa leg next to him and said with a smile, "I heard that Wei Changfeng earns a million for singing a song. I listened to it for free, so I earned a million, right? Haha."

Wei Changfeng said, "Good heavens, Lin Xiao, who told you this? I had no idea I was worth this much."

"Hmph, I won't tell you, but I just know anyway." Lin Xiao started to whine like a little girl.

Zhao Hui glanced at Wei Changfeng and said in a serious tone, "Well, Changfeng, you've taken on a big order behind my back."

Xiao Hao said, "That's right, I can vouch for it! My brother acts during the day and sings at bars at night. He earns a million for each song and has already sung at many bars."

Xiaomin laughed and shouted, "Yes, yes, I can testify too. I did the makeup and hair for every song. Of the one million, Xiaohao and I each got 500,000. We're rich!"

"Hey, so you're all millionaires, and I'm the only penniless one here, right?" Zhao Hui protested.

The more he talked, the more absurd it became, and everyone burst into laughter.

"Sing a few more songs! Letting us listen for free is like making extra money." Everyone cheered, urging Wei Changfeng to continue singing.

"Wait, I think I just saw a guitar in my room. I don't know if I can use it. Do any of you know how to play? You can accompany me," Xiao Hao said.
