When Lin Xiao woke up again, he found himself still lying on the carpet, with sunlight streaming in through the gaps in the curtains that hadn't been drawn yet, casting a warm glow on the floor.
Thankfully, the room had its own heating system, so she didn't freeze from sleeping on the floor. She rallied her spirits and began to embrace her new life; important exams awaited her.
The exam results were released shortly afterward. Lin Xiao had scored very high on her previous assignments, and her written and drawing scores were also quite good, making her overall academic performance excellent. Ms. Deneuve told Lin Xiao that she could get a paid internship at any of the haute couture studios that partnered with the school.
"Which company pays the most?" Lin Xiao blurted out the question without thinking. She was shocked by her own reaction afterward; how had she become like this?
Ms. Deneuve was slightly taken aback by her frankness, but she soon grew to like the student's openness. After all, who doesn't work to earn money? Art? Art needs money to survive too.
So she agreed to give Lin Xiao a salary list in the evening, but not to disclose it to anyone.
Lin Xiao immediately agreed. This way, she wouldn't have to bother looking for other part-time jobs. There was no reason why the internship salary at the haute couture studio should be lower than other jobs on the market.
As for the house, she has already asked people to help her find a buyer, including the real estate agency that Wang Handong introduced to her when she sold the house.
The agent was initially puzzled that she wanted to resell the property after only a few months of ownership, but later guessed that Lin Xiao urgently needed money, so she didn't ask any further questions.
Although Wang Handong was in France, he was still very well-informed about things in China. Ever since he learned about the large-scale overhaul of the medical industry, the long period of being unable to contact Lin Haitao, and Lin Xiao's eagerness to buy a house, he guessed that something must have happened to the Lin family!
However, as a nobody, he couldn't offer much help in such matters, so he pretended not to know anything unless Lin Xiao brought it up.
Since his abrupt departure, Yang Xile has started pursuing Lin Xiao seriously, sending her flowers, wine, bags, and jewelry. Afraid Lin Xiao wouldn't accept them, he sometimes left the gifts at her doorstep, but he never tried to enter her room again.
Whenever he didn't have classes, he would often drive his coupe to Lin Xiao's school gate to wait for her. That French guy from last time had become Yang Xile's loyal lackey, sending him the complete schedule of all of Lin Xiao's class's classes.
Because he had previously led Yang Xile to Ms. Deneuve and confirmed that Lin Xiao had requested leave to return to China due to a family emergency, Yang Xile, as agreed, allowed the Frenchman to drive his new sports car for over a week during Lin Xiao's absence.
From then on, he swore allegiance to Yang Xile. Yang Xile assigned him a very simple task: to observe Lin Xiao’s behavior at school, drive away any boys who tried to get close to her or were interested in her, and tell Yang Xile immediately if Lin Xiao needed anything or any help.
However, Yang Xile's actions were not very effective. Lin Xiao was traumatized by his previous behavior and would avoid him whenever possible. If she couldn't avoid him, she would beg him to give her more time. Yang Xile could no longer force her to do anything.
Winter break was fast approaching, and Wei Changfeng excitedly asked Lin Xiao when she would return to China. He said he was sorry that he might not be able to spend much time with her during this period because the Spring Festival was approaching, and Director Xu's movie was aiming for the Spring Festival release. He would be going on a nationwide roadshow with the film crew.
"But you can come with me, as long as you don't sit together. Just blend in with the fans at each show, and we can see each other every day and travel all over the country together!"
If it weren't for family matters, Lin Xiao might have thought the suggestion was good, because she didn't want to be separated from Wei Changfeng for even a moment. But now, as long as her father's situation remained unresolved, she couldn't live in peace, and Yang Xile's pursuit was also making her very irritable. Although he no longer forced her, the pressure of constantly making her make her own choices was ever-present.
If she chooses to continue being with Wei Changfeng, Yang Xile can probably only help her by introducing her to Wang Lu, which is already more than enough. There's still a huge financial hole she needs to find a way to fill.
If she chooses to break up with Wei Changfeng and be with Yang Xile, she won't have to worry about things at home anymore, but she will be in great pain.
Perhaps noticing that she hadn't been very interested in contacting Lin Xiao lately, Wei Changfeng suddenly deposited over 100,000 euros into one of her cards one day.
Lin Xiao initially thought there was a problem with the bank's system, but Wei Changfeng quickly told her the answer: it contained a portion of his movie salary, and because foreign exchange controls in China are currently quite strict, he couldn't transfer it all to her at once.
"Brother, why are you suddenly giving me so much money? Did someone say something to you?" Lin Xiao's first thought was that Yang Xile might have asked someone to find Wei Changfeng and told him about the current predicament his family was facing, which was why he wired some money over first.
Unexpectedly, Wei Changfeng's tone was unusually cheerful as he said to Lin Xiao, "Hey, do I need anyone to say anything about giving money to my wife? I was originally planning to transfer all my earnings from this movie to you, but the bank wouldn't allow it. This amount was only possible with the help of a director who's often stationed abroad. I'll transfer a portion first, and I'll send you more when you've spent it all."
After hearing Wei Changfeng's words, Lin Xiao realized that no one had told him anything.
"There's no need to bother exchanging currency; Alipay and WeChat are accepted in many places in France."
