Chapter 7

Chapter 7

The drizzle was so fine and dense that it quickly soaked one's clothes.

Wang Ying didn't feel cold; instead, she felt her blood boiling. She excitedly ran around in the field, realizing that the experimental field was real and not just a dream.

He quickly calmed down and went to check the wheat in the field.

According to the timeline of the previous life, it should be mid-April now. The wheat in the experimental field is almost at the heading stage, also known as the booting stage, and it will be ready for harvest in another month!

Looking at the thriving wheat field, Wang Ying felt indescribably happy, but then many questions arose in her mind.

What are the entry requirements for this experimental field? How long can I stay there each day? Is it permanent or is there a time limit?

However, these questions remain unanswered; the experimental field seems to have appeared out of thin air.

If she couldn't figure it out, she'd just leave it at that. Wang Ying plucked two ears of wheat and put them in her bosom, wondering if she could take them back with her sometime.

After looking at the wheat, Wang Ying walked toward the edge of the experimental field. Whenever he got close to the edge, an invisible force would bounce him back to the center of the wheat field, just like being trapped in a maze.

It seems I can't return to my original world through the experimental field.

The rain gradually stopped, the sky turned azure blue again, a gentle breeze caressed our faces, and the only sound was the rustling of the wheat.

The wheat fields after the rain were filled with the fragrance of soil and grass. Wang Ying took a deep breath and gradually accepted the fact that she could not leave.

A flash of white light appeared before her eyes again, and Wang Ying returned to her bedroom.

"Huff..." He sat up from the ground, panting heavily, and the wheat ears on his chest fell off with them.

"Just as I thought!" This time he calculated the time in his mind; he had just been in the experimental field for about an hour and a half.

Not knowing if she could get in tomorrow, Wang Ying drifted off to sleep with a host of questions in her mind.

*

Half a month has passed since Wang Ying transmigrated to this dynasty, and she has gradually become familiar with the Chen family.

The mother-in-law, Li, was a hands-off manager. She was gentle but weak-willed, spending her days eating vegetarian food and chanting Buddhist prayers for her children's safety. In her spare time, she would embroider and write poetry, showing no signs of being the head of the household.

My younger sister, Chen Qingyun, is a smart and capable girl. She manages the family affairs at a young age, but unfortunately, she is too young and is often tricked by the servants.

The third brother, Chen Qingsong, is still young, and his main task at present is to go to school. I heard that he is doing quite well in his studies, and he plans to try his luck next year.

As for Chen Qingyan, he still lay in bed every day, half-dead, and Wang Ying tried all sorts of ways to force him to eat, but his health did not continue to deteriorate.

In the morning, Uncle Chen finally got the wheelchair back. It was almost identical to the original design, drawn according to the blueprints.

Wang Ying pushed it and tried it out. It was no different from a modern stroller, even the swivel wheels at the back were copied!

He excitedly pushed the item into the house, exclaiming, "Hey, Chen Qingyan, look what this is!"

The person on the bed looked up and glanced at it. "A wooden cart? A wooden chair?"

“This is called a wheelchair. Let Uncle Chen help you sit in it, and I’ll push you out for a walk.”

"No way!" Chen Qingyan refused without even thinking.

"I went to great lengths to make this for you, so at least try sitting on it and see what happens."

"I didn't ask you to do it."

Uncle Chen stood to the side, at a loss, not daring to step forward and help the young master out of bed.

Wang Ying clicked her tongue, rolled up her sleeves, and rushed over to pick up the person on the bed. Don't let the fact that the original owner was a boy fool you; he had done a lot of heavy work back home and was quite strong.

Chen Qingyan was completely petrified, his face turning from white to red and then back to white again. After a long while, he finally roared, "What are you doing!"

"Come on, let's go outside and get some sun. You're practically moldy." Wang Ying put him in a wheelchair and pushed him out of the house without saying another word.

"Outrageous, outrageous..." The dazzling sunlight poured down on Chen Qingyan's face, making it impossible for him to open his eyes. He raised his arm to shield his face, and an indescribable feeling welled up in his heart.

How long has it been since he's seen such a bright sun? It seems that ever since he failed the imperial examination, his life has been shrouded in a damp gloom.

After a long while, Chen Qingyan slowly lowered his hand, letting the sunlight shower on his body, making him shiver with warmth.

Uncle Chen followed behind, secretly wiping away his tears. Fortunately, the young master was there; without him, the young master probably would never want to step out of the house again in his life.

The sun was too strong outside, and Wang Ying was afraid he would get heatstroke, so she pushed the cart to the old locust tree in the center of the yard.

"You sit here, I'll tidy up the vegetable garden."

There were originally three flower beds in the backyard, planted with roses, peonies and crabapples. Wang Ying didn't have much interest in flowers, so after discussing it with Li, she simply removed the flowers and served the dishes instead.

The vegetable garden wasn't big, but it grew quite a variety of plants, including scallions, coriander, garlic, and celery. On the other side, it grew cucumbers, gourds, and green beans that could climb the wall.

These are the most commonly used vegetables by the local people. Of course, in addition to these, there are a few unfamiliar seedlings in the corner, namely tomatoes, peppers and a few watermelon seedlings.

These seedlings were transplanted by Wang Ying from the experimental field. To understand why there were chili and tomato seedlings in the experimental field, we have to start with this.

When Wang Ying rented this experimental site, she also bought some farmyard manure from a nearby household.

Farmyard manure, or excrement, contains both human and animal waste. It's likely that some undigested seeds were mixed in with the manure and sprouted in the experimental field.

The seedlings were wilting a bit from the hot weather, so I carried two buckets of water and used a water ladle to water them.

After watering the vegetables, you need to build trellises, because plants like cucumbers, gourds, and green beans need to climb upwards to grow well.

He skillfully twisted thatch into a rope, stuck several wooden sticks in the ground, and tied them together.

In his previous life, he lived with his maternal grandparents from a young age and learned a lot of common sense and methods about growing vegetables, some of which could not even be learned from books.

Chen Qingyan sat under the tree watching him work. What started as tedious work gradually became interesting, and she couldn't help but ask, "Why did you tie that branch to the stick?"

"Because these are vines, they must be trellised during their vine-training period. If they are not trellised, they will grow wildly on the ground and block the sunlight, causing the shaded leaves to rot and affecting the yield."

Wang Ying stood up and continued, "It's different once you build a trellis. The vines will climb up the trellis, reducing the distance between the leaves. This allows for better ventilation and sunlight, which is why more beans can grow."

Chen Qingyan nodded thoughtfully, "I didn't know there was so much to learn about growing vegetables."

"Look, even plants need sunlight and fresh air, so do people. I'll take you out for a walk when the weather is nice."

This time, Chen Qingyan did not refuse, "Only the backyard."

Wang Ying laughed when she heard this. It seems that this kid is not beyond redemption.

"Big brother? You're out!" Chen Sanlang had just finished school and saw his older brother sitting under the tree. He ran over with a look of surprise and joy.

"Hmm... The weather's nice today, want to come out for some fresh air?"

"It should have been done long ago! What is this little wooden cart?"

“Wang… what your sister-in-law put together is called a wheelchair.”

Wang Ying washed her hands and walked over to Sanlang. "What did you learn at school today?"

"After studying the Analects, in the chapter 'Wei Zheng' (The Governance), Confucius said: 'If you govern the people by laws and keep them in order by punishments, they will avoid punishment but have no sense of shame. If you govern them by virtue and keep them in order by propriety, they will have a sense of shame and moreover become good.'"

Do you know what that means?

Confucius said, “If you govern the people with decrees and laws, they will obey but will not feel ashamed of doing wrong. But if you use morality to restrain them and teach them with rites and music, they will have a sense of shame and will correct their mistakes.”

After saying that, she looked intently at her older brother and asked, "Am I right?"

Chen Qingyan nodded slightly. "You only said the surface meaning of this sentence, but you didn't understand its deeper meaning." He quoted extensively, extending the meaning of the short sentence to a deeper level, which made Chen Qingsong look at him with admiration.

I have to say, this kid is quite charming when he's seriously lecturing, and he's very serious, like an old scholar.

He was a good person. Although he got angry easily, he never mistreated me. He gave me his clothes to wear and, fearing I would be cold sleeping on the floor, he even had the servants prepare two extra quilts for me in the room.

If it were you, suddenly marrying a complete stranger you've never met, you certainly wouldn't be as composed as him.

In her previous life, Wang Ying had never been in a relationship. She was busy with her studies in high school and finally got into her ideal university, but her maternal grandparents fell ill one after another.

During his sophomore year, a girl did pursue him, but at that time he was busy working part-time to earn money for his elderly parents' medical treatment and had no time to date, so he missed the opportunity.

Before he knew it, he was a senior in college. A friend introduced him to a girlfriend, but before they even got to know each other, he was transported to this world.

Wang Ying's gaze returned to Chen Qingyan. Seeing that his breathing was a little heavy, she quickly stood up and said, "Alright, take your brother inside to rest. He's too weak to sit for long."

"Yes!" Sanlang obediently pushed the wooden wheelchair into the house and, together with Uncle Chen, carried the person back to bed.

Chen Qingyan was probably tired today, as she ate more than usual, finishing more than half a bowl of soup noodles.

Ancient soup noodles were similar to modern noodles, with added vegetable leaves and meat strips, and they tasted quite good.

"Thank you for today."

Upon hearing this, Wang Ying looked up and asked, "Why are you thanking me?"

Chen Qingyan's ears turned slightly red. "The wheelchair is great, I like it very much."

"Hey, we've been husband and wife for a while now, I don't want to become a widow too soon,"

...

Chen Qingyan angrily threw off the blanket and covered herself with it. This person really can't say anything nice!

"Knock knock knock, is sister-in-law home?" Chen Qingyun's voice suddenly came from outside the door.

When I opened the door, I saw her looking anxious and giving me meaningful glances.

Wang Ying quickly pulled her outside, asking, "What happened?"

"Oh no! Uncle's family is here again! Mother wants to lend out her dowry!"
