☆22. Chapter 22 Entering the City

Chapter 22 Entering the City

"Big brother is back." A small black dot was jumping in the distance. Gu Feixue got closer and took a closer look and found that it was Yuchi Shuo.

Yuchi Shuo rubbed Gu Feixue's hair, took the kettle handed to him by Wang, and drank most of it without caring about his image. It seemed that he was very thirsty.

"Big brother, did you find anything?" Gu Feixue swallowed and smoothed her dry throat.

"Last night, I sneaked into the city with Pai Zhuifeng to investigate the situation and check on the miracle doctor." Yuchi Shuo lowered his voice and glanced around, seeing the numbness on everyone's face. "It's not easy in the city either. There are refugees everywhere. There are corpses everywhere, and countless casualties."

Yuchi Shuo looked at Gu Lang, knowing what he wanted to ask, and shook his head. Gu Lang sighed softly. For some reason, the waves of refugees in the distance had gathered in groups of three or five.

I don't know who started it, but a burst of angry shouts came out of nowhere.

"I can't stand it anymore. Why can't I go into the city? They're eating and drinking delicious food in the city, while I'm starving here."

"That's right, we're all starving to death."

"Instead of waiting to die here, it's better to rush in."

At first, a small group of people rushed towards the city gate, but later more and more people gathered. Groups of people rushed to the gate together. Although they were starving, they were all filled with the hope of survival and crawled through like zombies.

When a large group of people rushed forward together, a stampede was inevitable, and many people stopped crawling underground forever.

The remaining people rushed forward in a frenzy, their eyes bloodshot as they used their body strength to knock down the city gate. Over and over, the dilapidated city gate trembled, as if with one more slam, it would collapse completely with a loud bang.

The Gu family was scattered among the refugees. Yuchi Shuo quickly hugged Gu Feixue and protected her under his body to prevent her from being trampled by the refugees.

"Big brother." Gu Feixue shouted.

Yuchi Shuo shook his head slightly, "They are all crazy. This is not just a matter of hitting a rock with an egg."

Gu Feixue gently hugged Yuchi Shuo and patted his back gently to comfort him.

"Even ants try to survive, but now they have nowhere else to go."

How could the soldiers at the city gate turn a blind eye? They shouted threats and warnings to the refugees below. Their faces flushed, their voices hoarse, but no one paid any attention to the imminent collapse of the city walls.

With a wave of his hand, the city walls were filled with soldiers, drawing their arrows and crossbows.

"What are you afraid of? You'll either be shot or starved to death. Might as well give it a try!"

"Yes, I'm not afraid of death, so why would I be afraid of this?"

Seeing the swords and crossbows, he became even bolder. Even if it meant death, he would still climb up with all his remaining strength.

As the leader of the guards waved his hand, countless sword flowers fell like rain, and the thin bodies of refugees kept falling from the wall, and people kept going up one after another.

But how could a human being defeat a weapon? There were always those who turned and ran back in fear. Once there was one, there were two. For a moment, the sounds of trampling, arrows, and cries were endless. When everything quieted down, the ground was already covered with countless dead and wounded.

Yuchi Shuo helped Gu Feixue up and looked at the bodies scattered on the ground, feeling a little sad. Fortunately, everyone in the Gu family was fine, only Wang's arm was slightly scratched.

The surviving refugees gradually fell silent, gathering in groups of two or three. Some wept bitterly while hugging the corpses, while others lit fires with numb faces. After all, as night fell, the cold and hunger would kill an unarmed person.

Yuchi Shuo pursed his lips, as if he had made up his mind.

"Xiaoxue'er, can you lend me the jade pendant?" Yuchi Shuo got down and discussed with Gu Feixue.

"Big brother, are you going to find the government officials with the jade pendant?" Gu Feixue asked innocently, tilting her head.

Gu Lang turned around in surprise. He didn't expect Yuchi Shuo to nod resolutely. Yuchi Shuo's best solution for this incident was to hide his identity, but he didn't expect him to expose himself for everyone.

At this time, someone's stomach rumbled, and the sound suddenly became unusually loud in the quiet place. Everyone looked at Gu Feixue.

"Mom." Gu Feixue blushed in embarrassment. This body really couldn't resist hunger. "Xue'er, bear with it for a while while I go find something to eat." Gu Tingchuan, unwilling to let his sister suffer, immediately offered.

"I still have a little bit here. Let Xiaoxue fill her stomach first." Yuchi Shuo said as he took out the remaining sweet potato from his arms, but was rejected by Gu Feixue.

"I can still bear it. Big brother and I will go look for it together. Xue'er is also very capable!"

Gu Tingchuan picked up Gu Feixue and walked farther and farther away. Gu Feixue opened her X-ray eyes and tried to search for the remaining food.

After Yuchi Shuo got the jade pendant, he immediately summoned Zhuifeng, and the two of them disguised themselves and sneaked into the city.

The city gate was tightly closed, but the two men had a way. They found a secluded place and knocked the guards unconscious. They were both highly skilled in martial arts, so they could easily enter by flipping and jumping.

Unexpectedly, after landing, he found the corner filled with refugees, but they were all drowsy and skinny. They didn't even bother to look up at the two men's shocking behavior.

"Sir, this is the prefect's residence." Zhuifeng lowered his voice as the two of them reached the prefect's residence. He had found it a few days ago when he had sneaked into the city to investigate. It was called the prefect's residence, but on the surface, it looked like a run-down courtyard resembling that of an ordinary family.

When the two of them had just come over, they had seen several large steel companies with their doors and windows tightly shut. They had even erected high iron mesh on the walls to prevent anyone from climbing inside.

"I think this prefect is also an honest man." Yuchi Shuo said in a low voice. Zhuifeng went to knock on the door, knocking on the dilapidated door. "Yes, a few days ago, the prefect was still opening the granary to release grain, but I'm afraid there is not much left now."

The door creaked open, revealing an old face.

Zhuifeng jumped in lightly and covered his mouth with his hands, a fierce look on his face. "Where is the prefect?"

The servant trembled as he pointed the way. The prefect was sitting in his study. When Yuchi Shuo was about to shout, he took out a sign and put it in front of him. He looked at it carefully and knelt down without hesitation.

"Your humble servant greets His Royal Highness the Prince."

Yuchi Shuo looked around. The prefect was dressed simply and had a sad face. The furnishings in the entire house could only be described as tattered.

"This prince is visiting incognito, so there is no need to be formal. I heard there is an epidemic here, and I came here on the emperor's orders to investigate."

Upon hearing this, the prefect Liang trembled all over. "Oh my God, someone from the imperial court has finally arrived. Liang City is saved."

How come Magistrate Liang seems to care so much about the people but is unwilling to open the door to save them?

"Of course the court hasn't forgotten. Food is already on its way. When I arrived, I saw refugees running rampant outside the city, and corpses piled high inside. Could you please explain what's going on? I see some of your families are quite wealthy."

"Your humble servant...is truly powerless." Prefect Liang kowtowed, tears welling in his eyes. "The prince will make the decision for you. What are you afraid of? Just say it!" Zhuifeng scolded, giving Prefect Liang a dose of heart-strengthening medicine.

The two talked for a full hour.
