Chapter 1 The Love-Brained God 1: Slaying the Gods
For three years, the Kingdom of Nan'an had not received rain; the river had dried up, the land was cracked, and not a single blade of grass could grow.
During a great famine, people resorted to cannibalism, and widespread suffering filled the land.
The people, struggling between life and death, knelt in the Dragon God Temple, offering young boys and girls, begging the Dragon God to send rain and save them from their suffering.
"Dragon God...please have mercy and send down your sweet rain..."
"Lord Dragon God, I beg you..."
The emaciated people knelt on the ground, pleading with the dragon god to send rain.
Three years have passed, a full three years. Not a drop of rain has fallen in Nan'an Kingdom. Nine out of ten houses in the village are empty. In their desperation to survive, the starving people have even stolen the corpses of the dead...
If it doesn't rain soon, they really won't be able to survive.
They offered sacrifices of livestock and children, and sent many young boys and girls, but the Dragon God never appeared.
Are the gods abandoning their people, leaving them with only death as their fate?
When Qi Wang opened his eyes, he felt a burning sensation in his throat.
He sensed someone watching him; the person's gaze was almost tangible, and Qi Wang felt as if he had become food in someone else's eyes.
He followed the gaze and saw a gaunt, ragged man staring at him.
Memories belonging to the original owner flooded into Qi Wang's mind, and he recognized the other party's identity.
"Father, I'm not dead yet."
Qi Wang sat up from the bed.
The dimly lit room had no effect on him; Qi Wang could clearly see the expression on his father's face.
Upon discovering that Qi Wang was not dead, Old Man Qi's face showed a deep disappointment. His greedy gaze swept over Qi Wang a few times, and he secretly swallowed.
How did I wake up?
He forced himself to suppress his appetite and laboriously looked away.
"The villagers all went to the Dragon God Temple to pray for rain..."
"I didn't go. I prayed to the Dragon God for so long, but it still didn't rain. I'm giving up..."
Old Man Qi murmured a few words, then turned over with difficulty and lay down on the bed.
He was so hungry that reducing his activity would allow him to burn less calories and sustain himself for longer.
Qi Wang had fainted from hunger, and Old Man Qi thought he was dead.
After three years of drought, people had long lost their reverence for corpses, and the dead had become precious food.
At first, they couldn't bear to harm the corpses of their own relatives and chose to exchange them with others. However, as food became increasingly scarce, they stopped exchanging special and precious food with each other.
As long as one can fill their stomach, nothing else matters—humanity, morality, or anything else.
As long as I can survive, that's all that matters.
Qi Wang looked at his father, who lay there motionless. He was as still as a corpse, exuding an aura of decay.
They are clearly still alive, but it's as if they've already died, leaving behind only a soulless shell.
Qi Wang stared at Old Man Qi in silence for a while, then got up and walked outside.
The scenery outside was desolate; the sky was gray, the ground was gray, and there wasn't a single patch of green to be seen.
For three years, it has not rained in Nan'an Kingdom. This place, abandoned by the gods, is no longer suitable for human habitation.
Large numbers of humans died, and the remaining humans eked out a living, with a thick aura of death permeating the entire world.
The resentment born from human despair is pure and unadulterated. The souls of the dead are swept up by this resentment and flow into the black torrent, rushing towards the distance.
Qi Wang saw a pale golden light spreading across the sky not far away, and he walked towards it.
In a village filled with dilapidated houses, the magnificent Dragon God Temple stands out as an oddity.
The common people built temples and sculpted golden statues for the Dragon God, offering their faith and waiting for the god's mercy.
Even though their lives were already filled with misery and unbearable suffering, they still longed for divine protection.
They humbly prostrated themselves on the ground, offering their most devout faith and praying for a divine response.
However, while their deity accepted their offerings, it was unwilling to respond to its followers.
Qi Wang saw the golden power of faith gather together and spread towards the sky.
He squinted and looked in the direction of the golden power of faith.
The gods above the nine heavens received the people's faith, but he remained unmoved.
"Lord Dragon God, it has been a long time since the Kingdom of Nan'an has received rain. The underworld in charge of that part of Nan'an is already overwhelmed. Do you think we should send down rain for them?"
The dragon god, dressed in white, frowned, and annoyance appeared on his icy, stern face.
"Although I am the Dragon God, who says I must satisfy the desires of my followers?"
"I have served as the Dragon God for 30,000 years and have never neglected my duties, but who remembers my contributions?"
For this duty, he lost so much, even the woman he loved most turned to the demon god because of his dedication to his divine duty.
If he can't even have the woman he loves, what's the point of being a dragon god?
Is this the Dragon God position he willingly took?
The Dragon God didn't say these words aloud, but his meaning was already quite clear.
So what if there is widespread suffering and misery? So what if the people are living in misery?
What does that have to do with him?
The Dragon God glanced indifferently at the plain-looking female immortal and said coldly, "Everything is irrelevant to me. Nothing in the mortal world has anything to do with me. If the Heavenly Emperor thinks I am not worthy of the position of Dragon God, then let him strip me of this divine office."
With those words, the Dragon God flicked his long sleeves and strode away.
Upon seeing this scene, the female immortal couldn't help but sigh deeply.
The golden power of faith that had gathered from the common people entered the Dragon God's body, but he didn't look back and his figure quickly disappeared into the layers of palaces.
The female immortal sighed, feeling sorry for the common people struggling on the brink of life and death. But she was just a lowly female immortal and there was nothing she could do. After sighing, she turned and left.
No one except Qi Wang witnessed what happened in the Nine Heavens.
People are unaware that the god they worship has abandoned them, that he is weary of his divine duties and unwilling to give anything more.
They had no other way out.
But death is not liberation.
Souls entangled in resentment will be abducted by the Demon Lord and ultimately become nourishment for his power.
The original owner personally experienced all of that.
He starved to death and was consumed by resentment. He thought he would enter the underworld, but who would have thought he would enter another purgatory.
His soul entered a huge pool of blood along with those who had starved to death.
He saw a handsome man enter the blood pool, which was filled with countless souls, naked.
After he entered the blood pool, the original owner felt a tearing pain in his soul. He saw countless familiar or unfamiliar faces being torn into pieces, which turned into the purest power and entered the man's body.
The original owner wanted to escape, but could not break free from the blood pool's restraints.
Just as his soul was about to be swallowed up, a beautiful woman burst in.
"Yuanheng, you promised me you wouldn't use human souls to practice your skills. How could you do this?"
"Xia'er, listen to me..."
"I won't listen, I won't listen, you lied to me, I never want to be with you again..."
The beautiful woman named Xia'er turned and ran away, and Yuan Heng leaped up and chased after her.
However, at that moment, a white-clad man bathed in golden light descended from the sky and blocked Xia'er's path.
"Demon Lord Yuanheng, Xia'er doesn't want to be with you, why force her?"
The original owner saw a face that was exactly the same as the dragon god in the temple.
He naively believed that the Dragon God had come to kill the Demon Lord and save the believers.
However, he soon discovered that it was all just wishful thinking on his part.
Yuanheng and the Dragon God fought fiercely for Jinxia at the border between the Demon Realm and the Underworld. Countless souls were caught up in their battle and ended up being scattered and destroyed.
In the end, in order to stop the Dragon God from harming Yuan Heng, Jin Xia stood in front of Yuan Heng and blocked the Dragon God's strongest attack for him.
The original owner was just one of the ghosts caught in the war between gods and demons. The fragile human soul could not withstand the attack of the power of gods and demons and was on the verge of collapse.
He saw that, in order to save Jinxia, who was on the verge of losing her soul, the Dragon God offered up the power of faith that his followers had contributed to him.
He saw that in order to save Jinxia, Demon Lord Yuanheng extracted the power of all the remnants of souls on the battlefield and merged them into Jinxia's soul.
They would stop at nothing to save Jinxia.
Whether it's the power of faith or the human soul, they are willing to give anything to bring Jinxia back to life.
The original owner didn't understand what she had done wrong.
All he wanted was to survive.
But he died.
He thought they had done something wrong that made Nan'an Kingdom a land forsaken by the gods.
But it wasn't until after his death that he learned that the Dragon God they worshipped was unwilling to fulfill his duties because he had lost the love of Fairy Jinxia.
The human world has suffered from a severe drought for years, simply because the Dragon God lost his love.
The Dragon God knew that the Demon Lord was using human souls to practice his skills, but he only did so to let Jinxia see the Demon Lord's true colors. So he knew but did not stop him.
Jinxia knew perfectly well what Demon Lord Yuanheng had done, yet she still deeply loved him and was even willing to die for him.
She said, "Although you have done many wrong things, I know you are a kind and good person."
She said, "Yuanheng, I love you."
The original owner felt that all of this was utterly absurd.
He had thought countless times that they had done something wrong, that they were not devout enough, and that they had not shown the gods their purest faith.
He believed that humans had done something wrong, which was why they were abandoned by the gods.
But he didn't find out until he was on the verge of his soul being scattered.
They never did anything wrong.
The gods abandoned them.
He was unwilling to accept it.
Qi Wang passed through the kneeling people and entered the magnificent Dragon God Temple.
The people offered everything they could; when they had no food, they used their own flesh and blood as offerings to the gods.
But the gods in the Nine Heavens cannot see them.
At this moment, Qi Wang recalled a sentence.
The land of China does not nurture idle spirits.
This is not the land of China.
But so what?
Gods who do not serve humanity have no reason to exist.
The people kneeling outside the Dragon God Temple heard a loud bang and suddenly looked up in astonishment at the temple.
The towering dragon god statue was overturned and fell to the ground, its clay-sculpted golden body shattering into pieces.
The dragon god's head rolled out of the temple and landed in front of the people.
