Chapter 45 Will you marry Liu Tan in the future?
The two men, without any attendants, hopped up a small path. As soon as they reached the halfway point, they felt the heat dissipate by the layers of greenery.
The trees provide ample shade, their branches and leaves intertwining, with sparse golden sunlight filtering through the gaps. A cool breeze occasionally blows, carrying the fresh scent of leaves and earth.
Huiyin's face was flushed; she was very weak and already somewhat out of breath. Pei Yu, on the other hand, acted as if nothing was wrong, strolling leisurely behind her, his face pale and not even breaking a sweat.
She stopped in the shade of a tree, panting heavily, and wiped the sweat from her brow. If she had known she would have to climb up step by step, she would never have listened to Pei Yu and worn such elaborate clothes and heavy jewelry.
A water bottle was handed to him. "Have some water."
Huiyin tilted her head back and gulped down a few mouthfuls, then tried to sit down like a spineless limp wretch. But Pei Yu grabbed her arm with lightning speed, grinning like a fox who had gotten away with something, "Can't walk anymore? I'll carry you up."
Huiyin was indeed tired. She leaned against a tree trunk and looked up. There was still a long way to go to reach the top of the mountain. It would probably be difficult for Pei Yu to carry her up the mountain.
She shook her head. "I just need to rest."
Pei Yu appeared displeased and drawled, "You look down on your man, don't you?"
Without a word, he grabbed Huiyin's arm and put it around his neck, then bent down and easily carried her on his back. He patted her upturned buttocks and laughed, "By the time you climb up, the sun will have already set. Besides, you're dressed so nicely, and you'll be sweaty and uncomfortable climbing up. Don't push yourself."
Huiyin pouted. What he said made some sense, and Pei Yu was happy to take it as a lesson, so she was happy to be free. She leaned on Pei Yu's shoulder and asked, "Is there anything fun to do on the mountain?"
Pei Yu's lips curled slightly, his mischievous intentions evident in his words, "You'll find out soon enough."
Soon, Huiyin understood why Pei Yu had dragged her up the mountain, helped her dress up, and then carried her on his back halfway up the mountain.
He carried her for only a few steps when, at a stone pavilion on a mountain stream, he "accidentally" encountered Suiyang, Wang Zishao, Wang Huan, and others.
When Suiyang saw his cousin carrying Huiyin approaching from afar, his eyes lit up with interest. Ignoring Wang Zishao's attempts to stop him, he waved and called out to the two of them, "Cousin! Sister Huiyin."
Huiyin raised her head and looked in the direction of the sound. There were seven people sitting in the pavilion. Apart from Suiyang who was waving and Prince Shao beside her, the most eye-catching one was Wang Huan, who was tall and had a gentle and refined demeanor. The others were also members of the Wang family.
Huiyin froze, her knuckles digging into Pei Yu's collar. She demanded, "Did you do this on purpose! Don't go over there!"
Pei Yu was completely unaware, even freeing one hand to greet Sui Yang, and steadily walked past with Huiyin on his back.
Huiyin gripped his shoulder tightly and gritted her teeth, saying, "Put me down."
The person beneath her not only didn't let go, but also lifted her up a bit, pulling his arm in. The warmth of his palm seeped through the thin fabric onto Huiyin's thigh, making her feel unbearably hot.
As they got closer, Huiyin realized she couldn't avoid them, so she huddled on Pei Yu's shoulder like a quail and stiffly greeted Suiyang and the others.
Pei Yu, with a knowing look on his face, stood outside the pavilion with Huiyin on his back. His eyes and brows were full of smiles, showing that he was in a good mood. He asked first, "You're up the mountain today too?"
Huiyin stared at his profile and thought to herself: He's putting on quite a good act; he clearly planned this all along.
Suiyang nodded quickly and pointed to the group behind him, saying, "The mountain spring water is refreshing and delicious at this time of year. We've made plans to go for a hike in the mountains."
She pointed at Huiyin hesitantly and asked, "What are you doing here?"
Pei Yu slightly raised his chin, his gaze passing over Suiyang and fixed on Wang Huan sitting upright in the pavilion. He replied in a voice that everyone present could hear, "Huiyin is tired. I was just about to carry her up the mountain."
Huiyin still wore a slight smile on her face, but her heart was in turmoil. Her fingers, which were gripping Pei Yu's shoulders, began to turn white, but the man seemed completely oblivious, appearing thick-skinned and thick-skinned.
Sui Yang smiled and nodded, then invited, "Why don't we go up the mountain together?"
Pei Yu raised an eyebrow and stared meaningfully at Wang Huan's figure without saying a word.
Wang Zishao finally found an opportunity to grab Suiyang. His handsome face was filled with an awkward smile. He held Suiyang's hand and winked at him from behind.
Suiyang belatedly realized that the scene was somewhat awkward. No wonder she felt that her cousin was acting differently today. He was speaking to her, but his eyes were fixed on Wang Huan. However, since the invitation had already been made, she couldn't take it back. She could only awkwardly look at Wang Huan along with Wang Zishao.
Ignoring the stares of the crowd, Wang Huan slowly looked at Huiyin. His features were clear and bright, his sleeves flowing like clouds, and he spoke as gently as a breeze and the bright moon, "Huiyin, do you want to come with us?"
Pei Yu's face suddenly turned ugly. This person actually dared to seduce Huiyin right in front of him. This was intolerable. He changed his posture, completely hiding Huiyin behind him, and looked at Wang Huan with displeasure.
He squinted and met Wang Huan's gaze, but Wang Huan only glanced at him briefly before looking away.
Huiyin dared not be with them. They had only just met, and Pei Yu was already acting like a fighting cock. If they were to actually get together, what would happen?
She peeked out, about to refuse. Pei Yu spoke first, "I think it would be great to go together, what do you think, Huiyin?"
Huiyin wanted nothing more than to strangle him. If no one were around, she would definitely grab Pei Yu by the neck and yell at him for going crazy. She whispered back, "What exactly do you want?"
Pei Yu raised an eyebrow. "Nothing much, we're all acquaintances, we just bumped into each other and decided to travel together."
Huiyin was a little angry, realizing that he had come for Wang Huan today. The others were still waiting for her reply, so she nodded gently, "Then let's go together."
The group gathered together, and at Huiyin's insistence, Pei Yu put her down. He was initially reluctant, but he only gave up when Huiyin got really angry.
As soon as Huiyin landed, she left Pei Yu behind and walked hand in hand with Suiyang, not even giving Pei Yu a glance.
Prince Shao gave her a resentful look, and Huiyin could only apologize to him silently in her heart.
Pei Yu stared at Huiyin's angry back, touched his nose, and knew he'd have to coax her when they got back. He lagged a step behind, walking alongside Wang Huan, and asked in a familiar tone, "How has Young Master Wang been lately?"
Wang Huan smiled slightly, "I'm doing well lately, thank you for your concern, General Pei."
Pei Yu was about half a head taller than Wang Huan. At this moment, he looked down at Wang Huan with a sense of superiority. His eyebrows were slightly raised, which did not make him seem frivolous, but rather added a touch of nonchalance.
"I haven't had a chance to thank you properly since you saved Huiyin that day, please forgive me."
Wang Huan smiled and shook his head, "I have known Huiyin for many years, it's just a small matter. General Pei, please don't take it to heart. Besides, Huiyin has already thanked me."
Pei Yu's smile gradually disappeared. This Wang fellow still had designs on his people. He continued, "I heard that Huiyin was injured while learning to ride a horse as a child, and it was Young Master Wang who carried her all the way back?"
Wang Huan paused for a moment, looking at Huiyin's back with complicated emotions. He didn't expect that Pei Yu also knew about this. It seems that he and Huiyin have a very deep relationship.
He heard his own emotionless voice: "Yes."
After saying this, Wang Huan fell silent, his brows furrowing. Pei Yu, seeing that he had achieved his goal, did not try to start a conversation. The two walked in silence, side by side, yet clearly separated.
Suiyang glanced furtively at the two people behind her who seemed to be in an unusual mood, and whispered in Huiyin's ear, "Sister, will they start fighting?"
Huiyin took the opportunity to glance back. Pei Yu was dressed in a black robe. He had a charming demeanor in every gesture. When he saw her looking over, he lifted his eyelids and glanced at her, whether intentionally or unintentionally, which was the most annoying thing.
She glared at Pei Yu and raised her hand slightly to warn him. Then she looked at Wang Huan beside Pei Yu. He was slightly different from before; his demeanor was somber, and his brows seemed to be tinged with sorrow.
Huiyin withdrew her gaze, signaling Suiyang to rest assured. Wang Huan was a civil official, while Pei Yu was a military general. Wang Huan would not make a move, but Pei Yu could easily take Wang Huan down with one hand. He was arrogant and disdained to fight.
All she wanted to know was whether Pei Yu had said anything inappropriate to Wang Huan.
Upon reaching the summit, a gentle breeze swept away everyone's fatigue. The group found a clean, large rock and sat down together.
Except for Pei Yu, who was still full of energy, everyone else was panting and needed to catch their breath. He saw that Huiyin was sweating, so he came to her and took out a handkerchief to wipe her sweat.
"How was it? You wouldn't carry me, you must be exhausted now."
Huiyin was indeed exhausted, but Suiyang was younger than her and had climbed all the way up on his own, so she felt embarrassed to complain about being tired. She swallowed and said uncomfortably, "I want some water."
Pei Yu had finished drinking from the water bottle at his waist. Not wanting Huiyin to use water that someone else had used, he patted her head and said, "Wait for me."
He got up and collected all the water jugs that the others had finished drinking from, not even leaving Wang Huan's. He carried the water jug towards the mountain spring, his well-tailored robe accentuating his tall, slender figure, his silhouette carrying a hint of nonchalant unruliness.
After he left, Wang Zishao came over, took out a silk handkerchief and gently wiped Suiyang's face, saying with concern, "I told you not to come along, does your foot hurt?"
The boy's smile was clear and pure, unadulterated. The smile had barely lifted his lips when it emanated from his eyes, like ripples spreading across a lake. His nose was already beginning to take shape, but the lines still retained the softness of youth.
Suiyang tilted her little face up, her eyes sparkling with excitement, "I'm not tired, this is the first time I've climbed a mountain by myself."
Wang Zishao squatted down beside Suiyang, carefully massaging her calves, and praised her generously: "Yangyang is so great."
Suiyang blushed and gently kicked him, covering her face and not daring to look at Huiyin.
Huiyin consciously moved aside, leaving space for two people. As soon as she sat down, another person sat down beside her—Wang Huan.
He handed Huiyin a clean handkerchief and smiled, "Wipe yourself."
Huiyin glanced back; Pei Yu hadn't returned yet. She shook her head slightly, not taking the item, and asked hesitantly, "What did Pei Yu say to you just now?"
Wang Huan showed no sign of disappointment. He put the handkerchief back and said, "He came to thank me on behalf of the palace banquet that day for saving you, and also for the incident when you fell off your horse as a child."
Huiyin breathed a sigh of relief, her smile becoming more genuine. "Yesterday, Pei Yu took me horseback riding. I'm not afraid of horses anymore, and I'll be able to ride one soon."
It felt as if a grain of sand was slipping through Wang Huan's fingers, impossible to grasp no matter how hard he tried. He lowered his head slightly and said calmly, "That's good."
Huiyin rested her hands on the rocks, gazing into the distance. From here, she could see the entire panorama of Ganquan Palace, and even the shore of Xiushui Lake. She squinted, like a full and satisfied little raccoon.
Wang Huan couldn't help but move a couple of steps closer to her, his voice very soft, "Huiyin, do you... like Pei Yu?"
Upon hearing this, Huiyin remained silent for a long time before gently exhaling, "I like it."
Wang Huan's eyes dimmed, his fist clenched unseen, and two little voices were beating inside his heart. One said to tell her his feelings now, and maybe she would change her mind. The other said that she had already fallen for someone else and he shouldn't bother her anymore.
Wang Huan opened his mouth, gave a bitter smile, and then said nothing more.
Footsteps approached from behind. Pei Yu strode over, carrying a wine jug filled with spring water. His lips were tightly pressed together, his brows were cold, and even his jawline was taut.
He took off his water bottle and threw it to the others, then walked to Huiyin's side with one in each hand, his dark eyes fixed on Wang Huan, his anger hidden.
Wang Huan took the kettle, thanked Pei Yu, glanced at Huiyin, and then left.
Huiyin looked up at Pei Yu's tightly clenched lower lip, reached out and tugged at his hem. Pei Yu squatted down with a tense face, opened the kettle and handed it to her.
Huiyin took the water and drank a couple of sips. The spring water was clear and refreshing, with a sweet aftertaste, relieving the dryness in her throat. She licked her lips. "Did you drink some?"
Pei Yu took the water bottle expressionlessly, tilted his head back and poured it down. The spring water flowed down his long neck, and his Adam's apple bobbed.
After he finished drinking the water, he squatted down next to Huiyin, his eyes deep and thoughtful.
Huiyin pulled him down to sit, took his arm, pointed to a spot of undulating mountains, and asked what it was.
Pei Yu explained everything to her one by one. Looking at Huiyin's fair cheeks and her incessantly chattering lips, he wished he could hold her head and kiss her deeply, telling everyone present that Huiyin was his.
But he couldn't; Huiyin would be angry. He suppressed his displeasure and said calmly, "I don't want to be with them. Let's go."
Huiyin turned to look at him, neither blaming him nor asking why, but instead told him to inform Suiyang, and then let him obediently lead her away.
Pei Yu led Huiyin to a narrow chasm, only wide enough for one person to pass at a time. Pei Yu led Huiyin across, one in front of the other.
Beyond the rock face, a vast field of blooming flowers stretched out behind us.
Looking into the distance, one can see a vast expanse of vibrant colors stretching to the horizon, vying for attention with the clouds.
At the edge of the flower field stands a sturdy old tree, silently guarding this bustling beauty. Its gnarled branches contrast with the delicate sea of flowers, creating a strange harmony between the strong and the gentle, the still and the dynamic.
Pei Yu released Huiyin's hand, casually picked a bright wildflower and tucked it into her hair. He leaned against the rock wall, crossed his arms, and looked at the beauty in front of him.
"I discovered this land when I first came to Ganquan Palace when I was fifteen years old. I never expected it to be even more lush now than it was then."
Huiyin took a few steps forward, her skirt brushing against the flowers, petals falling softly to the ground, filling the air with fragrance.
"This place is so beautiful."
Pei Yu didn't like strong floral scents. He wrinkled his nose, moved closer to Huiyin, and lazily cracked his knuckles, saying, "I've noticed that you spend most of your time practicing calligraphy and pruning flowers. I guess you really like these flowers and plants. When we get back, I'll have someone plant a flower field for you."
He said to himself, "Linshui Pavilion is a bit small. Why don't you move to my place?"
Huiyin squatted in the flower field, and in no time she had a bunch of flowers of different colors in her hands. Without turning her head, she stared intently at the flower field and said, "I'm not moving. I like Linshui Pavilion."
"Alright, as you wish."
Seeing Huiyin looking so excited, he walked towards the big tree in the distance and instructed her, "I'm going to take a short rest. Don't wander off. Call me if you need anything."
Huiyin waved her hand, indicating that she understood.
After collecting the various flowers, she tied them together with long, thin-leaved grass. Yan Niang also loved flowers, and the flowers in Huiyin's bedroom were changed by Yan Niang every day. Now that she couldn't get out of bed, Huiyin wanted to take this bouquet of flowers back to cheer her up.
She got up and looked around. Pei Yu was lying under the tree, his hands behind his head as a pillow, one leg propped up, and a round green leaf covering his face.
Huiyin lifted her skirt and ran over, her long hair flying, a smile never fading from her lips. She came to Pei Yu's side and suddenly had a mischievous idea. She knelt down beside him, picked some small purple flowers, arranged them into a ball, and inserted them one by one into Pei Yu's hair.
After climbing the mountain for half a day and playing around for a while, she was a little tired, so she lay down next to Pei Yu, slowly closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Deep within the flower field, the vibrant colors suddenly quieted down.
Pei Yu caught a whiff of a familiar scent, turned to face Huiyin, and gently rested his chin on the top of her head, his breathing long and steady. He naturally wrapped one arm around her shoulder, his hand falling naturally to rest on her arm, an unconscious gesture of protection.
Huiyin curled up on her side, her cheek slightly turned towards his chest, her long eyelashes like butterfly wings casting a faint shadow under her eyes, and the corners of her mouth slightly upturned.
At this moment, hierarchy, worries, and all worldly concerns are left outside this sea of flowers. Only breaths mingle and heartbeats gradually synchronize.
——
At dusk, all was quiet.
Pei Yu was the first to wake up. He moved his numb body, while Huiyin slept soundly in his arms.
He reached out and pinched the tip of her nose, while touching her earlobe with his other hand. With both hands working together, Huiyin woke up in no time.
She yawned softly, her eyes still half-closed, and nestled against Pei Yu's chest, drifting off to sleep.
Pei Yu felt something lightly bump his chest, and a warm current spread from the point of impact, instantly permeating his entire body.
He instinctively tightened his arms around her, his movements as gentle as if he were afraid of breaking a rare treasure. He couldn't help but think how could the person in his arms be so adorable? Every move, every smile, struck the softest spot in his heart, leaving him utterly defenseless.
He said in a very gentle tone, "Huiyin, wake up, we have to go down the mountain."
Huiyin rubbed her eyes, struggled to sit up, and stared blankly at Pei Yu. She knew purple suited him well, but she never expected it to be such a perfect match.
He wore flowers in his hair, yet he didn't appear feminine at all. He simply tucked the vibrant spring light behind his ear, adding a touch of glamour to his already dashing appearance.
While others might appear affected by wearing flowers, it looks perfectly natural on him. His smile carries a hint of intoxication and a touch of untamed spirit; his gaze, without a word, speaks volumes about the splendor of life.
Pei Yu waved his hand in front of her, "Are you silly? I'll carry you down the mountain."
Huiyin suppressed her laughter in time and stopped him from squatting down, saying, "You can carry me when I can't walk anymore."
Pei Yu took her hand and they strolled slowly down the mountain, enjoying the beautiful scenery of the sunset and the boundless clouds.
Huiyin exclaimed, "This sea of clouds is truly beautiful."
Pei Yu said without turning his head, "I'm tired of seeing these clouds. If you like them, I'll bring you to see them every day."
Huiyin pounded her aching thighs. She had been tormented by Pei Yu last night, and today she had gritted her teeth and climbed the mountain. Her legs were already trembling and about to give up.
She quickly refused, saying, "No, you can see it from down the mountain too."
Pei Yu stopped and gazed at the clouds with longing in his eyes. "The clouds in Dai County are beautiful too. It is the key to the northern frontier, where the land meets the dust of the barbarians. They are like banners unfurling and the dust raised by ten thousand cavalrymen galloping by."
Huiyin gazed at his profile bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun. "Do you really want to go back?"
Pei Yu shrugged, shook his head, said nothing more, and led Huiyin down the mountain.
He didn't say it, but Huiyin knew that he missed it. He missed the cold sandstorms of the desert, the Great Wall and the smoke of war in Dai County, and his brothers who fought alongside him.
The five years he spent in Dai County must have been very difficult. The numerous scars on his body were undeniable; he was of noble birth and could have enjoyed a life of honor like others, yet he was stationed on the harsh frontier for five years.
Under the oppressive influence of imperial power, no one can escape. Beneath the Pei family's blazing glory and favor, who knew the danger lurking within? With the Crown Prince, Prince Wu, coming of age, His Majesty, to prevent the Pei family from becoming too powerful, elevated Prince Wu to counterbalance the Zheng family.
The other two branches of the Pei family are far from the central government and are not in Chang'an most of the time, making them practically useless. Five years ago, the Grand Marshal died in battle, and Pei Yu, who was fifteen years old at the time, took up the mansion. His widowed mother was weak and his younger brother was still young. He not only had to support the Pei family, but also had to support the Empress Pei, who was struggling to support the young Crown Prince in the palace.
Huiyin grasped Pei Yu's hand, their fingers intertwined, and her chest felt as if something was silently choking her, heavy and swollen.
She recalled the old man at Xuanping Gate talking about Pei Yu when news of the great victory at Dong'ou arrived. He had once been such a passionate person. Was he in Dai County just like in Chang'an, dressed in fine clothes and riding a spirited horse, commanding a large following with a single call?
Huiyin couldn't help but feel jealous of Liu Tan. She had seen the passionate and flamboyant Pei Yu in his youth and had received his tender care. She wondered if Pei Yu had done the same things to Liu Tan as he was to her now, and if he had also taken her to lie in the flower field and watch the clouds together.
Yan Niang asked her if she was willing to give it up. Huiyin thought that she was able to give it up, but it would be very difficult.
Pei Yu noticed the person behind him was in low spirits, so he led the way, carefully guiding her down the slope. "Why aren't you saying anything?"
Huiyin hesitated for a moment before finally asking, "Will you marry Liu Tan in the future?"
Pei Yu was initially taken aback, but then his brows and eyes relaxed completely, and his laughter was clear and melodious, like jade striking each other. He even laughed so hard that he leaned against Huiyin's shoulder, his shoulder shaking.
Huiyin, enraged and embarrassed, pushed him away and walked forward alone.
Seeing that Huiyin was embarrassed and annoyed, Pei Yu hurriedly followed up and bumped her with his shoulder, asking in a cheerful tone, "Jealous?"
Huiyin shook off his hand and walked forward with her head down.
Pei Yu explained from behind, "I will not marry her."
Huiyin slowed her pace, waiting for Pei Yu to catch up. He placed his hands on Huiyin's shoulders, turned her around, looked down into her eyes, and said, word by word, "I will not marry her."
"Oh." Huiyin blinked, brushed his arm away, and continued walking forward.
Pei Yu took her soft little hand again and held it tightly. "I didn't realize you were so jealous."
Huiyin retorted, "I'm not jealous."
Pei Yu looked back at her furrowed brows and slightly wrinkled nose, finding it amusing. "Alright, alright, I'm not jealous."
It was already dark when the two descended the mountain. At the foot of the mountain, a group of people were gathered, holding torches and chatting. It was Suiyang and his group, who had also just come down the mountain.
Huiyin froze, turned her head to look at Pei Yu, and secretly thought that something was wrong. She wanted to tell Pei Yu to turn around and leave, but it was too late.
Suiyang also saw the two of them at this moment and greeted them, "Cousin, you've just come down the mountain too..."
Her voice stopped abruptly, her expression frozen on her face. Wang Zishao and the others beside her also turned their heads, their expressions mirroring Sui Yang's.
Pei Yu ignored them, nodded slightly, glanced at Wang Huan unconsciously, and left with Huiyin in his hand.
Pei Yu only noticed something was wrong when he walked up to Wang Huan. He stopped and frowned as he looked at the group of people staring at his face as if they had seen a ghost.
Pei Yu raised his hand to touch his face and asked Huiyin, "Is there something dirty on my face?"
Huiyin's gaze moved past the row of small purple flowers on his head, and she said with utmost sincerity, "No."
Pei Yu then turned his head and stared coldly at the group of people, scolding, "What are you looking at?"
Suiyang said with difficulty, "Cousin, you..."
Wang Huan stepped forward, blocking Pei Yu's view. He glanced at Huiyin, who was beside Pei Yu, giving him a meaningful look. The corners of his lips slowly turned up, and his laughter was as gentle and refined as a spring breeze caressing the strings of a zither. "It's getting dark. General Pei, please go first."
Pei Yu clenched his fist, he couldn't stand his pretentious act of seducing Huiyin right in front of him, it was truly hateful.
He scoffed coldly, walked forward with his head held high, and the little flower in his hair trembled with his movements.
Huiyin let out a breath, looked apologetically at Wang Huan, and obediently followed behind Pei Yu. She hadn't meant to embarrass Pei Yu; she had simply forgotten. Now it was too late to speak up, or Pei Yu would surely skin her alive.
Along the way, he returned to Yingfeng Pavilion amidst the astonished gazes of many people. As soon as he entered, he saw He Jiaying taking a walk in the courtyard to digest her food. She stared at Pei Yu with her mouth agape in disbelief, "Cousin, you... like wearing flowers in your hair?"
Pei Yu frowned, noticing the strange looks he received from people along the way. After hearing He Jiaying's words, he reached up and ruffled his hair. A few small purple flowers lay quietly in his palm, reminding him of what had happened.
He turned to look at Huiyin beside him. The person who caused the trouble had already slipped into Yanniang's room with the bouquet of flowers without even saying hello to him.
Pei Yu replied expressionlessly, "I like it, do you have a problem with that?"
He Jiaying shook her head like a rattle drum. Her cousin looked terrifying, as if he was about to take up a knife and chop someone. She didn't dare to delay and quickly hid back in the house.
Pei Yu ignored the smirking maid and walked into the main room with a straight face. He stood in front of the bronze mirror, where three small flowers remained on the man's hair, swaying as if greeting him.
So, he walked all the way back from the foot of Ganquan Mountain with his forehead covered in flowers.
Pei Yu recalled Wang Huan's smile standing in front of him. His arm stiffened, and after a long while, he finally raised his hand to remove the stray fish from his head, gritting his teeth, "Song Huiyin."
He shouted outside, "Bring Song Huiyin here!"
The maidservant hurriedly said "Yes" and ran to the next room.
Huiyin was arranging flowers in Yanniang's room. The colorful bouquets added a touch of brightness to the dim room, making people feel better just by looking at them.
Yan Niang leaned against the bed, watching Huiyin's smile that hadn't stopped since she entered the room, and she couldn't help but feel a little happier.
Ah Heng raised her hand and knocked on the door, "Wife, the young general is looking for you."
Huiyin's smile deepened, and she replied, "You go down first, I'll be back in a bit."
Aheng repeated Huiyin's words to Pei Yu as instructed. She lowered her head and nervously moved her feet, her palms sweating, afraid that Pei Yu would get angry and scold her.
Unexpectedly, although Pei Yu was angry, he didn't say anything and just waved her away.
Huiyin was protective of her own, and ever since Pei Yu had scolded Huiyin's maid and been reprimanded, he had toned down his temper and hadn't scolded her maid again.
Huiyin had to talk with Yanniang for half an hour every day and wouldn't be back for a while, so Pei Yu got up, took a clean set of undergarments, and went to take a bath first.
After taking a bath, he hastily dried his hair with a handkerchief, sat on the couch and flipped through the bamboo slips. He waited for a long time, but there was still no movement outside.
Pei Yu couldn't sit still any longer, so he got up and went to Yan Niang's room to knock on the door. At first, no one answered, so he knocked twice more. He waited impatiently until someone inside finally spoke.
Huiyin: "Who is it?"
Pei Yu was furious. "You come out here right now!"
Huiyin was reading to Yanniang when she heard this and refused, saying, "You go back first, I'll be right back."
Pei Yu couldn't wait any longer and knocked on the door, slamming it so hard it made a deafening noise. "I'm not blaming you for embarrassing me, but what's with hiding from me for so long? Come out!"
