Chapter 40 Looking at the Photos

"Xiao Bao? What are you looking at?"

Ke Shurong turned around and saw her daughter staring intently at the ground.

“Look at the ants, Mom. Let’s keep going up and see.” Xia Wenxi stood up and took Ke Shurong’s arm.

"Okay, let's go."

Looking at her daughter's smiling face, Ke Shurong subconsciously followed her forward. She didn't know if it was just her imagination, but she felt that her daughter seemed much happier.

The mountain was very large and not fully developed, so the two walked for a while before preparing to return the way they came.

"When we get back later, we can go check on your dad. I wonder if he caught any fish all morning. If he did, Mom will make you fish soup for lunch."

"Wow! Mom, your cooking is so delicious! I think it tastes even better than what a professional chef makes."

At this point, Ke Shurong smiled shyly, "I haven't done this for many years. I thought my skills would be rusty, but I didn't expect it to be so good."

Ke Shurong looked up and thought for a moment, as if recalling her youth.

"Back then, your father had just started his business, which is now Hengyuan Group. It wasn't easy back then. Sometimes he was so tired that he would fall asleep without even taking off his clothes, and he became extremely thin."

It broke my heart to see him like that. I couldn't help with anything else, so all I could think about was making something nice for your dad. Actually, we have a housekeeper, so I don't need to do these things, but at that time, all I wanted to do was cook for my husband myself. Over time, I got the hang of it.

At this point, Ke Shurong straightened her expression and said,

"Looking back now, I was pretty silly back then. Your dad was tired from working and socializing every day. When he came home, he didn't even have time to taste the food in his mouth. He just wanted to fill his stomach and rest as soon as possible."

When I cook for him, he actually cheers me up and tries to coax me.

At that time, I thought that if I knew a little about the company, I could help him. But although my grandparents and uncles were very good to me, they never thought of teaching me about the company.

When I wanted to marry your father, your maternal grandparents disagreed. I even used my own money to help him start his business, which made them even more opposed; they thought I'd been scammed.

"But Mom, you must know what kind of person Dad would marry."

After Xia Wenxi finished speaking, she was surprised to see Ke Shurong shake her head.

"Actually, Mom was also gambling at the time. I did love your father, but when I took out the money, I knew in my heart that I was gambling. I wasn't sure that your father would be good for the rest of his life."

Ke Shurong held her daughter's hand and walked slowly down the road, whispering her thoughts to her daughter.

"Your mom and dad wanted you to go to work at a company after graduation because we didn't want you to become a housewife like your mom. But now that you have something you like, that's good. With your mom and dad here, you won't have to gamble when you meet someone you like, okay?"

Xia Wenxi hadn't expected them to consider so much even after she graduated. She nodded, "I understand, Mom. With you both here, I can stay single forever, right?"

"Sure, but many of my old friends' sons are very handsome. I'm thinking of introducing you to them sometime!"

After hearing this, Xia Wenxi immediately looked conflicted.

"Is he really that handsome? Your daughter likes tall, handsome guys who are 185cm tall."

"Yes! We have all kinds of puppies and wolves."

Xia Wenxi's eyes widened. "You even know this?"

"That's right! Your mom is very trendy too."

While they were talking, Xia Hengyuan called. Even without speakerphone, Xia Wenxi could hear his excited voice on the other end of the line.

"Looks like we'll have fish soup for lunch today," Xia Wenxi said with a smile after her mother hung up the phone.

"Yes, he called as soon as he got home to brag about catching a big fish."

When the two returned, they found two fish weighing about two pounds each.

"I knew it had something to do with feng shui! I changed my spot today, and that's how I caught one!"

As Xia Hengyuan spoke, he caught one of the fish and showed it to the mother and daughter.

"Alright, stop showing off. Hurry up and call someone to clean up. I'll make fish soup for lunch."

Ke Shurong pulled Xia Wenxi back a little, afraid of getting splashed with water.

"No need!" Xia Hengyuan threw the fish back into the bucket. "I learned how to do it yesterday, I'll kill it myself today!"

"Okay, go ahead and kill it. I'm waiting to make fish soup."

Upon hearing his wife's support, Xia Hengyuan happily grabbed the bucket and headed off. Ke Shurong pulled her daughter aside and whispered:

"Let's try some of the dishes the chef here makes for lunch today. Let's order a few more, who knows how long your dad will take to kill this fish."

As it turns out, Ke Shurong understands her husband very well.

The lunch they ordered had been delivered to their door. The two fish weren't quite dead yet; one of them had its belly cut open halfway and was still hopping around on the ground.

It was only after the staff who delivered the vegetables came forward to help that the two poor fish were able to pass away.

"Put it in the refrigerator, we can drink the fish soup tonight."

Xia Hengyuan was a little embarrassed, but he still had to add, "Fish caught fresh are just different; they're really resilient."

"Hurry up and eat, eating won't shut you up."

With a look of disgust, Ke Shurong put a large piece of braised pork on Xia Hengyuan's plate, shutting up his stubborn mouth.

Xia Wenxi was exhausted from climbing the mountain in the morning. After lunch, she went back to her room and fell asleep almost immediately. When she woke up, she heard a rushing sound outside, like it was raining.

I went out onto the balcony and saw that it was true. It felt hot in the morning, but now that it's raining, it feels a bit cool.

The distant mountains were also shrouded in mist; taking a breath of air, my entire nasal cavity felt moist.

This kind of weather is perfect for sleeping. So Xia Wenxi opened the window, lay back down on the bed, and quietly enjoyed the comfort.

A few minutes later, the silence was broken by a WeChat notification sound.

Xia Wenxi lazily took out her phone and opened it. As soon as she saw the first message, she immediately sat up in bed.

Lin Shen: [I just came back from the branch office and found a kitten on the road. It was raining outside and it was in the road, which was very dangerous.]

Lin Shen: [I'm too busy with work to take care of it. I was thinking of finding an adopter at the company, but then I remembered that you seem to like cats.]

Lin Shen: [I don't know if you would be willing to adopt me]

Xia Wenxi got out of bed, hesitated briefly, and then decided—

Want to see the photos?

Xia Wenxi stared at the selfie of Lin Shen that popped up on her phone and remained silent for a long time.

I meant... a picture of a cat...

Lin Shen: [Sorry]
