Unable to make up her own mind, she even called her daughter over to help her choose.
"Xiao Bao, which one do you think is a good gift for Huan Huan? Help Mommy pick one out."
Xia Wenxi offered her opinion based on her limited knowledge of wealthy families—from novels and TV dramas.
"Wouldn't a bracelet be a more suitable gift for a meeting?"
"A bracelet? You have a point."
Ke Shurong opened one of the boxes, inside which was a pair of jade bracelets. Although Xia Wenxi had never tasted fine jade, she could tell that they were very translucent and beautiful.
"This is the best of all my bracelets, but this one..."
Ke Shurong hesitated and said, "These bracelets were given to me by your maternal grandmother when I got married. They were also given to her by her mother when she got married. I was originally thinking that you and Dabao would each get one when you get married."
As Ke Shurong spoke, she took one out and put it on Xia Wenxi's hand, scaring her so much that she dared not move.
"It looks beautiful! You have fair skin, so jade suits you perfectly."
"It looks nice, but Mom, you should put it away for now."
Wearing something this expensive on your wrist is really stressful.
After thinking about it, Ke Shurong finally chose another one.
As she spoke, Ke Shurong took out another box. "This was specially prepared for your birthday. Do you think it looks nice?"
Xia Wenxi was immediately amazed when she opened it. Inside was a small sapphire crown headdress, shaped like branches and leaves, and inlaid with diamonds and sapphires.
"It's so beautiful, thank you, Mom."
"By the way, Mom, is that your and Dad's wedding ring that you're wearing now?"
Xia Wenxi had just seen several rings in the jewelry box and remembered the one she had seen in her dream. However, they all seemed a little different. The ring her mother was wearing now was also different from that one; the diamond on this one was much larger.
When Ke Shurong heard her daughter ask, she didn't think much of it, got up and went to the room to take a box from the bedside table. "This isn't my wedding ring, this is."
Ke Shurong took out the ring to show her daughter and explained:
“When your father proposed to me, Hengyuan was just starting out. He used the profit from his first successful business deal to buy this ring. Although he had more money later and could have bought a bigger and better one, this ring still has a very different meaning in my heart.”
So I insisted on wearing this ring when we got married, but every time your dad saw it, he felt he had wronged me back then. From our tenth, twentieth, and thirtieth wedding anniversaries, he would buy me a new ring so I could switch between them.
As Ke Shurong looked at the ring, she recalled things from her youth, and for a moment, she didn't notice the change in her daughter's expression.
Xia Wenxi didn't know how to describe her current feelings. It really wasn't a dream, but a memory.
"Mother."
"What's wrong, Xiao Bao?"
Xia Wenxi smiled and shook her head, "Nothing, I just wanted to call out to you."
Although Ke Shurong didn't understand why, she still reached out and gently patted her daughter's head.
The weekend was spent cleaning the house thoroughly, including pruning all the plants in the front and back yards.
On Monday, Xia Wensheng unusually left work on time and went to Minghuan's house to pick her up. However, when he got downstairs, he ran into An Yun, who was about to leave.
Xia Wensheng was no stranger to her; they had even eaten together a few times, since she was his girlfriend's good friend.
"Miss An."
"Mr. Xia, Huanhuan has been waiting for you for quite a while. Please go upstairs."
Xia Wensheng nodded without saying anything and walked past her into the building.
When Xia heard the sound and entered the door, she was astonished when she saw the pile of things in the entryway. "You prepared so much stuff?"
"Is it a lot? Your parents', Wenxi's, and Xiaoyu'er's, that's all, not much."
Xia Wensheng had thought it was too much just now, but after hearing this, she pretended to be dissatisfied and said, "There's nothing for me?"
"What's it to you? Don't make things worse." Minghuan was too nervous to banter with him.
"By the way, when you came up, did you run into A-Yun?" Ming Huan asked, keeping an eye on Xia Wensheng's expression.
"Yes, we ran into her. She said you've been waiting for me for a long time. Don't worry, Huanhuan, my parents are very happy to welcome you. Don't be nervous."
Minghuan secretly breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that An Yun hadn't said anything to Wen Sheng. An Yun seemed to still hold a grudge against Wen Xi. When she came to the house in the afternoon, she even told her to take a good look at the Xia family's attitude towards Wen Xi.
The two of them had a rather unpleasant parting, and it was one thing to say it in front of her, but Minghuan was afraid that she would say it to Xia Wensheng.
"What's wrong?"
"It's nothing, let's go, it's getting late."
Minghuan thought that she needed to find another opportunity to have a proper talk with An Yun. She cherished An Yun as a friend, but... there were some things she still hoped she could decide for herself.
Meanwhile, at the Xia family...
"Little Bao, do you think Mommy's makeup looks good? Doesn't it make Mommy look intellectual and gentle? She looks like a kind and understanding mother!"
Xia Wenxi suppressed a laugh and said, "Yes, Mom, you look especially beautiful today, you're absolutely radiant!"
When Xia Wensheng left Minghuan's house, he sent a message in the family group saying that they were on their way.
Ke Shurong immediately patted Xia Hengyuan, who was sitting upright next to her, and said, "Remember to smile later, don't keep a serious face and scare people away."
"So this is what I look like..."
"Smile! Can you smile?"
So when the door opened, the first thing Xia Wensheng saw was his father's bared teeth, which startled him.
Before he could even open his mouth, his mother pushed him aside.
Minghuan was nervous before entering the room, but her nervousness was greatly relieved because Wenxi, whom she had met a few times before, was there.
"Hello, uncles and aunts, I am Minghuan."
Ke Shurong's lips never left her mouth. "Hello Huanhuan, welcome to my home."
"Okay, welcome." Xia Hengyuan nodded and smiled, but before he could speak, his wife interrupted him again.
"She's so beautiful, even more beautiful than in the photos!"
"Minghuan, come in quickly." Xia Wenxi helped her carry the things in her hands and took her arm as they walked inside.
The father and son were left behind. Xia Wensheng glanced at his father and asked, "Dad, did you look in the mirror today?"
What are you trying to say?
"Your smile is too creepy, you should tone it down."
"Get out of here, you can't say anything nice."
Today, Aunt Li used all her skills to cook a huge table of dishes, which were laid out to the brim.
"Huanhuan, eat more vegetables. And don't just eat by yourself, put some food on Huanhuan's plate too."
Looking at the harmonious scene before her, Xia Wenxi was genuinely happy. It was wonderful that the "tragedy" she had witnessed before hadn't happened, and would never happen.
