Chapter 95 Goodnight

In fact, Lin Shen hadn't tried to fall asleep using his usual methods these past few days because he was thinking about things.

Or rather, he needs to think about things quietly at night, so he forces himself not to fall asleep.

Lin Shen squeezed the hand of the person next to him and said casually, "No, how could Xiaoyuer's snoring not work? It works better for me than anything else. I was busy with work at the company until too late yesterday and didn't get enough sleep, that's why I'm like this."

After saying that, he reached out and touched his eyes. "It's probably because I'm getting old. I get like this when I don't get enough sleep."

Xia Wenxi felt that Lin Shen looked a little pitiful in his current state, so she comforted him with a joke: "Who said Lin Shen is old? This Lin Shen is so handsome!"

"Let's go, let's go eat."

Lin Shen was indeed comforted; he always felt relaxed when he was with Wen Xi.

Xia Wenxi originally came with the intention of having dinner with Lin Shen. She had clearly eaten dinner that night, but... the food here was just too delicious.

After finishing a bowl of rice, Xia Wenxi said with a hint of sadness, "I've been gaining weight lately."

Upon hearing this, Lin Shen placed another chicken wing on her plate and gave her a reason she couldn't refuse.

"It's September, time to fatten up for winter."

After the main meal, there's a small dessert.

"Studying is hard work, eating something sweet will probably make you feel better?" Lin Shen said, serving her another bowl of sweet fermented rice balls.

Okay, okay, that makes a lot of sense. How can a woman have the energy to study if she's not well-fed?

Lin Shen ate quite a bit tonight; he probably saw the person he wanted to see and unconsciously developed an appetite.

Even though he still had things to say, he didn't want to spoil her appetite at this time.

"Wenxi, today... there's something I want to tell you about my father."

After they finished their meal and the dishes were cleared away, the restaurant served a pot of herbal tea. Now, it was time to be honest.

Xia Wenxi nodded, not surprised. When she got in the car today, she felt that Lin Shen seemed to have something to say.

"I suddenly left for the hospital on Saturday because my mother suddenly fainted, and the reason my mother fainted was... my father cheated on me."

Lin Shen didn't even look up to see Xia Wenxi's expression. Instead, she kept her head down, staring at the bracelet on her wrist, which Wenxi had tied for her herself.

The confession continues.

"It's not just about cheating, because he's been cheating on his wife for years. What's different this time is that she's pregnant. I wanted to find out who she was, and the investigation revealed that he was having relationships with four women at the same time. The youngest one is even younger than Lin Junying and is still in school."

The private room was quiet, but Lin Shen continued talking.

"Later, I found one of the four women, the one who was pregnant. When I found her, she had already had an abortion at the hospital, and for some reason, I felt relieved because I didn't have to deal with it."

As the president of the Lin Group, I should persuade her to abort the child, discuss compensation with her, and ensure she doesn't say anything inappropriate in front of the media. But this isn't a simple matter, and as Lin Shen, I don't want to do it.

Bringing life into existence... should be a great and careful thing. I never imagined that one day I would have to be an indirect executioner.

Because of his family background and his experiences growing up, Lin Shen has always believed that there should only be one reason for the birth of a child: love.

Instead of attaching anything else that would lead parents to have unrealistic expectations of their children.

Life is the continuation of love, not a vessel for parents' expectations.

Don't be like him, born simply because he was a child of his parents' previous marriage, not good enough to be the heir of the Lin family.

“Wenxi, I haven’t dared to face you these past few days. I don’t dare to guess what you will think after you find out about this, whether you will think that I, who carries Lin Shuyu’s genes, am also very annoying. But I can’t and shouldn’t lie to you.”

After Lin Shen finished speaking, he looked up at Xia Wenxi, awaiting the "judgment" to come.

At first, Xia Wenxi was indeed surprised. She knew from what Lin Shen had said about family matters that the Lin family was probably not very harmonious.

But I never expected it to turn out like this.

She didn't hesitate for long before reaching out and grasping Lin Shen's hand.

"Genes may determine some things, but not everything. Otherwise, what would be the point of education? If we have to talk about genes, I don't even know the people who gave me my genes, my biological parents. I have no way of knowing whether they are good or bad."

"You're so kind, Wenxi." Lin Shen gripped her hand tightly, as if afraid that Xia Wenxi would pull away.

“Lin Shen, this is the person I see now, and that’s the person I like. It has nothing to do with your father.”

On the way home, Lin Shen asked Xia Wenxi, "Do you know how I feel right now?"

However, he gave his answer before Xia Wenxi could reply.

"A survivor."

Before getting out of the car, Xia Wenxi said to him, "Actually, I not only believe you, but I also believe my own eyes."

“Wenxi, you also need to talk to your uncle and aunt about this. Once this matter is completely over, I will come and explain it to them myself.”

Xia Wenxi unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over to hug him.

"I know, don't overthink it. I knew you hadn't slept well for days, and you lied to me today. Go to bed early tonight."

"Yes, I will."

Lin Shen obediently went home, washed up, and went to bed early. He ignored everything else and directly turned on that familiar audio, then quietly waited for sleep to come.

However, perhaps because he had gotten used to staying up late and exhausting himself before falling asleep in the past few days, he suddenly relaxed today and didn't feel sleepy as easily.

Lin Shen lay on the bed in the high-rise apartment. The windows were very soundproof, so the room was very quiet, with only the soothing purring of the kitten remaining.

He closed his eyes, guessing that the twenty-minute audio should be almost over, and he would probably fall asleep after playing it again later.

Then he heard a familiar voice, a soft whisper, as if afraid of waking him.

He heard her say, "Goodnight, Lin Shen."

It turned out she had saved a surprise for herself. Usually, he was already asleep at this time and hadn't heard her say goodnight.

Lin Shen picked up his phone from the bedside table and played the audio again without skipping ahead.

After the music played, he lay quietly in bed, waiting for her to say, "Goodnight, Lin Shen."
