"What's wrong, An'an? Why are you looking at me like that?" Gu Nanyan found a pair of silver-rimmed glasses from somewhere and put them on.
"Sit down, let's talk." Shen Bei'an raised his chin, his tone unusually serious.
Gu Nanyan seemed to have known all along, handing Shen Bei'an a glass of warm water and sitting opposite him.
"An'an's tone is so serious, it makes me a little uncomfortable." Gu Nanyan had a faint smile on his lips, and his phoenix eyes, hidden behind his silver-rimmed glasses, were full of tenderness.
Sensing that Gu Nanyan didn't seem to care, Shen Bei'an felt even more certain that his guess was correct.
I didn't just transmigrate here last year; I came here a long, long time ago.
It may be much earlier than he imagined.
Those memories of being with Gu Nanyan were from their childhood.
The so-called original owner might indeed be the original owner of the book he read, while the original owner in his past memories is himself.
"When did I tell you that?" Shen Bei'an didn't say much and asked directly.
Holding a water glass in her hand, her peach blossom eyes stared straight into those phoenix eyes.
Shen Bei'an, who was usually gentle and delicate in front of Gu Nan'an, suddenly became cold and resolute.
Gu Nanyan stood up, squatted down in front of him, and reached out to hold his hand. "An'an told me a long, long time ago," she smiled, her face as bright as the moon, her forehead resting on his hand.
Shen Bei'an was stunned. He hadn't expected that he had trusted Gu Nan'an so much in the past, even telling her about transmigrating into a book.
"An'an, do you remember what I said? You can always believe in me." Gu Nanyan reached out and stroked his legs, his expression full of affection.
Shen Beian discovered that Gu Nanyan seemed to have a special affection for his legs. He used to think that Gu Nanyan was just a leg fetishist, but now he realized that it was not quite the same.
Did something happen in the past?
"Yan Yan," Shen Bei'an grasped Gu Nan Yan's hand in return, "why did you fall in love with me?"
He didn't believe it was solely because of their childhood friendship.
A troublemaker like that, probably not many people could stand it, and for so many years.
Moreover, given Gu Nanyan's personality, if he was initially just giving face to the Shen family, how could such an unruly person possibly tolerate such a troublesome childhood sweetheart as he grew older?
Unless there's some hidden story behind it.
Gu Nanyan touched his leg casually, her eyes deep and unfathomable. "An'an, don't you remember? Pengcheng fifteen years ago." She didn't hide anything and brought up Pengcheng, a place that Shen Bei'an had almost forgotten.
Pengcheng?
Shen Bei'an frowned, recalling this place.
"An'an, don't think about it anymore. You can ask me anything. I'll tell you whatever you ask." Gu Nanyan stood up and smoothed his furrowed brows, his voice gentle and warm.
Shen Bei'an pulled Gu Nan'an down to sit, saying, "Don't stand. You're already taller than me, and if you stand, you'll block all the sunlight." Although he said this, his movements were very gentle.
Gu Nanyan slowly recounted these past events.
Fifteen years ago, Gu Nanyan was eight years old and Shen Bei'an was seven years old.
The two children, accompanied only by a few bodyguards, arrived in Pengcheng, a small coastal city in the south.
The scenery here is unlike that of Jiangnan, where spring reigns all year round, as described in the poem by Liu Yong of the Song Dynasty: "The Qiang flute plays in the clear weather, the water chestnut song floats on the night, and the fishermen and lotus-picking children are playing happily." Nor is it like the capital, where the four seasons are distinct, the markets are filled with pearls and jewels, and the households are overflowing with silk and brocade, vying in extravagance.
But this small town has its own unique beauty.
At the time, no one expected that something would happen to these two people when they came here. Pengcheng was one of the safest places in the entire empire.
But despite this cliché plot, the two children were kidnapped.
Gu Nanyan was only eight years old at the time, so naturally he didn't have that much cunning or composure.
However, as the heir of the Gu family, he is quite intelligent and has already served in the military.
They managed to keep the criminals calm for a while, but were caught red-handed while trying to escape!
Shen Bei'an's legs were covered in blood as he tried to save her.
Gu Nanyan had seen dead people before, but that pool of bright red blood stung her eyes.
Fortunately, both families arrived in time.
Only by putting Shen Bei'an into the cell repair device was Shen Bei'an's leg saved.
It was Shen Bei'an's idea to go to Pengcheng, but coincidentally, the Gu family was also discussing Pengcheng at that time, which piqued Gu Nan'an's interest as well.
And it was practically as if Gu Nanyan took Shen Beian to Pengcheng.
It can only be said that Gu Nanyan was too arrogant at the time, thinking that he would be safe just because he had bodyguards by his side.
The Shen family can't blame the Gu family, and the Gu family can't blame the Shen family either.
But it was from that time onwards that Gu Nanyan began visiting the Shen family more and more frequently.
Gradually, the two children developed a deeper bond.
When Gu Nanyan was twelve years old, Shen Beian told him.
I went to Pengcheng because Xie Yunyu, who was three years old at the time, was there and was almost humiliated by a group of beggars.
Gu Nanyan also remembered that the two of them had saved a little girl in Pengcheng.
As a member of the imperial family from a privileged background, Gu Nanyan could not possibly stand by and watch someone die.
It was Shen Bei'an who spent money to send Xie Yunyu to the orphanage, which was later sponsored by Fu Muqian.
Shen Beian said that in the original book, the female lead was indeed humiliated there, which is one of the reasons why she refused to accept the male lead later on. The two didn't get together until almost the finale.
Shen Beian kept cursing the original author while he was speaking.
The original author's book is somewhat unconventional; many plot points resemble pseudonyms, yet it is quite different.
After all, who would write their own alternate-identity novel's female protagonist as being abused?
However, this seems to better fit the image of the female lead after she grows up.
